"Desktop simulator with janitor (Dieter)"
Cardboard boxes, pens, screws, nails, washers, aluminum paper, plastic, copper wire, toothpicks, papier-maché figurine, helicopter toy parts, acrylic and spray paint, France 2006
This is a model of a full-flight simulator (FFS) used for pilot training. I was commissioned to make it as a going-away present for one my colleagues at Airbus in Toulouse, who happened to have spent a lot of time during the certification efforts of a particular A340-600 FFS named "S25". The model's cabin can move along its 6 degrees-of-freedom by means of six pens turned into actuators. It has a joystick connected to two LEDs (on top of the cabin) and to an electric motor (at the base) which creates vibrations and moves not only the base, but also the janitor and his pail, giving the impression that he's mopping the actuators' hydraulic fluid leaks off the floor.
