LRBC FAR FROM DISGRACED IN SCRAPPY AFFAIR
A scrappy but close game saw LRBC just miss out to a more skillful and combative but less fit outfit from Wykebeck. Anthony Thorpe's late penalty save kept LRBC in the game and set up a tense finale but despite two late free-kicks LRBC were unable to force an equaliser.
LRBC could not have started the game better when Rosty Belibov showed good skill to beat his man on half way and then gallop forward before thumping a shot through the 'keeper at the near post. LRBC held onto the lead for a large chunk of the first half before left-back Carl Murgatroyd misjudged a back post cross resulting in a tame shot being fumbled over the line for an own goal by LRBC 'keeper Thorpe. Another cross from the right found a few minutes later found a Wykebeck player unmarked at the back post to side foot home.
Once again despite never giving up LRBC had once again failed to get close enough to their opponents giving them too much space to pass the ball, and the half time team talk reinforced the need to deny their opponents space.
LRBC competed better in the second half but were still unable to retain any quality posession and failed to make best use of Belibov's undoubted ability to get the better of the Wykebeck defence. However on one of their rare breaks forward Elliot Johnson's ambitious 25-yard volley slipped between the Wykebeck 'keeper's legs for level the scores. South African Johnson, playing his last game before returning to Cape Town, had already turned to chase back such was the lack of power in the strike. Sadly, LRBC were unable to keep the scores even for long with what would turn out to be the winning goal coming a few minutes later after LRBC were unable to clear a corner.
