LRBC 4-3 LRBC VETERANS
LRBC PUSHED HARD BY VETERANS
Gareth Carey Jones reports
LRBCs season opener proved to be a tougher test than expected against the LRBC Veterans who put last years thrashing behind them to push the current squad close in this ever-popular challenge match. The muted response and disappointment on the faces of some of the current squad should not detract from a promising performance and some glimpses of the attacking flair that new skipper Ed Jackson hopes to bring to the team. The highlight for LRBC was undoubtedly the performance of Anthony Thorpe whos wing play showed that his decision to relinquish the goalkeeping position could transform the clubs attacking threat.
After a slightly nervy start LRBC took charge of the first half and deservedly took the lead when new vice-captain Jez Jarvis latched onto a mis-hit shot to finish well at the far post. LRBC continued to create chances with Gareth Carey Jones twice failing to make the most of good chances. The former captain is hoping to push for a more attacking role this season but will need to be sharper in front of goal to hold down a starting place. LRBC extended their lead when Jonny Hoy won the ball in midfield before powering through the Veterans back four and cooly slotting home. The goal showed just what the teenaged midfielder is capable of and LRBC will hope to see more of the same throughout the season.
The second half saw LRBC lose shape and begin to lose out in the midfield contest. Defensive organisation also suffered and the Veterans deservedly pulled a goal back shortly after the interval with record scorer Jonathan Parkinson scoring his first ever Veterans match goal. LRBCs defence will be disappointed by the room they allowed Parkinson for that goal there was little they could do about the Veterans equaliser, with Mark Milsoms freak 40 yard volley surprising keeper Mark Frater. Thorpes calm lobbed finish restored LRBCs lead but the Veterans, to the delight of the watching crowd, were soon level again when Jonathan Parkinson heading home from close range. Fittingly though the final goal of the game came from Thorpe whose quick-thinking finish won the game.
