LRBC 6-0 LRBC VETERANS
LRBC OVERCOME VETS AT THIRD TIME OF ASKING
After defeats against the LRBC Veterans in the last two challenge matches, LRBC finally got the better of their predecessors on a baking hot day in Weetwood, with the scoreline going a long way to banishing memories of last year's cruel defeat. A first half hat-trick from Ed Jackson, combined with second half goals from Joe Wilson, Luke Walsh and Mike Philpott, gave the score an ultimately flattering look, with Jonathan Parkinson wasting the Vets best chance when his late penalty was saved by Mark Frater.
LRBC's main threat in the first half came from 'keeper Anthony Thorpe's long kicks with Jackson taking advantage of the Vets failure to head clear to score two early goals. Later in the half Jackson steered home the third from Adam Tobin's near post cross after good work from Mark Fisher. The Vets best effort came from Fran Clarkson whose left volley was well tipped over by Thorpe.
Despite a raft of substitutions from LRBC at half time they avoided a repeat of last year's second half collapse. The Vets started the half with a new found solidity at the back, and it was midway through the second period when Joe Wilson broke the offside trap before delicately chipping Vets 'keeper Rod Wark. Luke Walsh soon added a fifth with a powerful drive from just inside the box beating Wark at his near post.
An ultimately frustrating morning for Vets' skipper Jonathan Parkinson was then completed when his penalty was saved after he had been fouled by LRBC centre-half Steve Robinson. In contrast to Parkinson's calm penalty in the last-minute of LRBC's crunch match against Gildersome last season, this time LRBC's record scorer side-footed straight at Frater. The 'keeper was making his first LRBC appearance since the 2003/4 season following more than two years out injured, and was outstanding in the second half. Mike Philpott's deflected sixth goal for LRBC then completed the rout.
