Ed Jackson reports...
We launched into the game taking the game to St Peters. Jez Jarvis was having fun down the left, and Steve Robinson and Jonny Hoy were providing a great barrier in front of the centre halves. The energy levels were high and there was a real enthusiasm. Jonathan Parkinson was outstanding. He carried the game to the opposition. Running down hopeless causes, chasing everything, he was a legend. Chances were coming and it was a bit of a surprise that it took so long for Parkinson to open the scoring. From a cross from the right the ball came out to Parkinson on the left and his powerful sliding shot flew past the keeper. In the ensuing celebrations, both Parkinson and Jarvis suffered minor injuries. Duncan Brownnutt and Tim Thomson looked solid throughout, and keeper Anthony Thorpe had his best game of the season. David Turner gave a good performance, despite one or two lapses. So 1-0 up at half time.
From kick off we poured forward, throwing caution to the wind. The ball ended up at the feet of Robinson in the penalty area with the keeper to beat. His confident finish continued his excellent scoring for the season. Celebration followed and some sort of relied flowed through me. The game swung each way, with St Peters becoming increasingly frustrated and vocal with each other; a great sign for us. Brownnutt and Tim Thomson, under instruction, kept the St Peters skipper very quiet and he only registered two decent shots throughout the game.
As the time ticked down, the game needed closing. We needed to stay strong and focused. Chances continued to come to Robinson, Turner and Jarvis but the third goal did not come. Nerves started to surface and these were worsened when from a good right wing cross the St Peters player was left with an easy finish.
The team did not collapse though. They continued under the leadership of the excellent Robinson, and the shape was good. They held out, while still creating chances. This led to a goal in the last minute when Parkinson, with the last touch of the game, put the ball through the keepers legs into the back of the net. A great end to the game.
