LRBC CRASH TO NEW LOW

Gareth Carey Jones reports

A game to remember for all the wrong reasons for LRBC as they crashed to defeat against nine-man Shipley and ended up having two players sent-off as their battle against relegation suffered what is surely a fatal blow in this key encounter. Shipley should be applauded for their approach to a game they played with nine men throughout, and they gave a lesson to the LRBC side in how to keep posession and create space. LRBC could and should have managed at least a draw with the clear-cut chances they created but that's scant consolation given the circumstances. LRBC will wonder where it all went wrong after taking one of their strongest squads of the season into the fixture and having an unhurried journey and ideal warm-up (a rare event for LRBC!).

LRBC went ahead early on when Jonathan Parkinson continued his goal-scoring run, forcing home when the St Peter's 'keeper failed to keep hold of the ball. Steve Robinson then side-footed over as LRBC threatened to take advantage of their numerical superiority. However, the danger signals were already there as St Peter's found time and space to cut through the LRBC team at will right from the kick-off. They were soon level thanks to an own-goal from LRBC 'keeper Mark Frater, and went two up with a neat lobbed finish following a long ball over the top of the LRBC defence. Gareth Carey Jones deflected in Ed Jackson's shot following a corner to make it 2-2, but St Peter's took a lead into half-time after a sweet left-foot volley from the corner of the box left Frater motionless.

Half time saw LRBC try to repair the team-spirit that had taken a battering as first half events unfolded, but things turned from bad to worse as Joe Wilson was sent off for using foul and abusive language towards the strict, but in this case correct, referee. The circumstances and some poor refereeing decisions may have been frustrating the whole team, but Wilson will know there is no excuse for that behaviour in this team. LRBC battled on in hope that their opponents would tire but mid-way through the second half St Peter's extended their lead from a corner, and caught LRBC on the break for a fifth soon after to end LRBC's hopes of salvaging anything from the game. And just when LRBC thought the day could not get worse Duncan Brownnutt was dismissed for a professional foul late in the game.
