LEAGUE MATCH
LRBC 2-2 ST JOHN'S BOWLING EAGLES
BELIBOV AND WALSH RESCUE POINT FOR LRBC
This game was a tale of two halves for a disorganised LRBC outfit who will be pleased to snatch a point having been outplayed for much of the match, and only managing to take to the field five minutes before kick-off!
Late arrivals saw Walsh and Belibov only make the bench for the start of the game and it was their introduction at half time, combined with a switch to a five-man midfield, that allowed LRBC to get back in the game. Still trailing 2-0 midway through the second half, Belibov galloped down the left to beat two defenders before calmly slotting past the 'keeper from a difficult angle. Minutes later a similar break gave Belibov another chance and his weak shot was bundled home by Luke Walsh following a mistake from the St John's 'keeper.
Given their preparation for this match, it was hardly suprising that St John's were quicker off the mark and the Bowling side scored in the opening minute with a well-controlled volley from the edge of the box. LRBC chased hard for the rest of the half but allowed the St John's team too much space all over the pitch and St John's will have been disappointed that they failed to put the game out of reach before half time. Their second goal arrived just before the break with an improvised finish at the back post.
Although St John's still had the upper-hand in the second half, LRBC were able to close more gaps in midfield, and could have had another goal when Luke Walsh's excellent header, following another Belibov raid down the left, went inches wide. By the end it was St John's pushing for the winner and LRBC 'keeper Anthony Thorpe dealt well with a whole stream of crosses in addition to an excellent save high to his left. The LRBC defence led by the excellent Duncan Brownnutt also deserve credit for a resiliant display. LRBC will be pleased with a point given the difficulties at the start of the game and the result promises better things with several key players available to return for the visit of Holmewood.
