LEAGUE MATCH
OSSETT LOGOS 3-2 LRBC

LRBC BACK DOWN TO EARTH

Ed Jackson reports....

After enjoying a fantastic unbeaten start to the season LRBC came unstuck away to an enterprising Ossett team. LRBC may well feel that they deserved a share of the spoils, and whilst there was no doubting the effort on display, their failure to defend as a collective unit and inability to hold onto possession meant they were always chasing the game. It could though have been different.

Missing skipper Gareth Carey Jones and Joe Wilson in midfield, LRBC started with Steve Robinson accompanying tireless worker Luke Walsh in the centre of midfield, and started brightly with James Burgess proving a handful down the right. Yet, the balance of possession soon shifted to Ossett who, through their lively forwards, posed a significant number of problems for the LRBC rearguard. Clear chances were few and far between until around half way through the first half, when a well delivered corner from the Ossett right was headed home from the edge of the six yard box.

LRBC responded to the goal by pushing forward, and the equaliser came a few minutes before half time. A break down the left saw the returning Ed Jackson cut in and feed James Burgess perfectly for the youngster to beautifully lift the ball over the advancing keeper into the far corner. It was a goal of true quality.

Going in at half time at 1-1, LRBC had every chance of winning the game, as they had the benefit of the slope in the second half. The words spoken though at half time did not turn into action.

The second half was a frustrating affair for the LRBC team as they never managed to get hold of the ball to actually control the game. Their breaks were sporadic and their main chances came from the pinpoint passes of Burgess who had moved to play upfront.

It was Ossett who enjoyed the territory and they scored a fortuitous second goal when a cross from the left slipped through the hands of Anthony Thorpe. At this stage LRBC were still struggling to get tight to the Ossett forwards when defending, and this extra time and space enabled their neat pass and move style to thrive.

The introduction of sub Danny Sykes, brought instant dividends with the centre midfielder picking the ball in the Ossett half and threading a great ball for Burgess to place the ball with pace into the bottom left corner of the net. 2-2.

With about 20 minutes to go, Ossett pushed forward and a cross from the right was headed home, and despite their endeavour after that LRBC could not get back into the game. Their closest chances coming from a Burgess free kick which forced a good save from the keeper and a desperate diving header from Jackson at the far post.

So a 3-2 defeat. Yet perhaps it is a sign of the progress of the Leeds club over the last few years that expectations are now much higher. Even missing several players LRBC went into this game still looking to win it, and at no stage ever gave up. A little more quality in possession and discipline when defending should ensure that this result is only a blip.
