LEAGUE MATCH
LRBC 5-3 JORVIK BLADES
LRBC GRIND OUT VITAL WIN
Gareth Carey Jones reports...
A workmanlike peformance secured LRBC all three points and went some way to putting the record straight following defeat at Jorvik last month. A less experienced side may have caved in when defensive mistakes from LRBC kept Jorvik in the game, but a hard working LRBC kept competing and secured a deserved victory. The headlines will rightly go to Jonathan Parkinson who's hat-trick made it five goals in his last two games since returning to his favoured striking role, and LRBC Man of the Match Steve Robinson, who scored his third goal in as many games. But unsung heroes Carl Murgatroyd and Duncan Brownnutt deserve praise for their performances, with Brownnutt almost flawless defensively, and Murgatroyd continuing to impress with his best performance for the club. Ed Jackson's thirty yard volley also deserves a mention and will surely take some beating for goal of the season.
LRBC fielded a strong team, although their pre-match preparations were disrupted when Tim Thomson had to be drafted in as an emergency goalkeeper, prompting a re-shuffle at the back. The return of Jackson and Parkinson up front meant goals were always likely to come, and a combination of better passing and fewer mistakes at the back (not least from the skipper) would have led to a bigger winning margain. In truth LRBC have not passed the ball well all season, and the club still await someone to assume the role of playmaker.
The game began with Jorvik having more possession and territory in a fairly even game, with LRBC competing and maintaining shape but failing to keep the ball and make much progress with the possession they did get. Jorvik took a deserved lead midway through the half when a lack of concentration at a throw in, allowed Jorvik to make space down their left. Gareth Carey Jones miscued clearance falling straight to a Jorvik player who's shot had too much power for Thomson. Falling behind did prompt LRBC to up their attacking efforts and they began to find space in more dangerous areas, and were rewarded when Jackson's delicious dipping volley found the top corner.
Knowing that a win was essential and goal difference important, LRBC switched to a three-man backline and three up front for the second half with Rosty Belibov replacing Mark Fisher. Although the quality was still missing from much of LRBCs play the new formation allowed them to take the game to Jorvik who played on the break for much of the second half. LRBCs main threat came through balls over the top of the Jorivk defence and they took the lead when Parkinson scambled home after beating the Blades keeper to a well placed through ball. However, LRBC were once again undone by a set-piece when they failed to clear a poorly struck corner at the near post allowing Jorvik to equalise.
However, the three-man front line of LRBC were finding more and more space, and with Belibov dropping deep and picking up possession were looking more and more dangerous. LRBC regained the lead, when Jackson's excellent hold-up play allowed Parkinson to force a shot through the keeper from just inside the area. A fourth soon followed when sustitute David Turner's set-piece delivery found Parkinson unmarked at the back post, and although the veteran's header was pushed onto the bar, Robinson followed up to head home.
But LRBC once again made life difficult for themselves when Karimi's mistake played the Jorvik striker onside in front of the LRBC keeper allowing him to glance home a miscued shot. The game finished in somewhat controversial fashion when Jackson was brought down when bearing down on the Jorvik goal. The defender was convinved the tackle was outside the box but the referee awarded a pentalty which Parkinson confidently dispacted into the top corner of the goal.
