LEAGUE MATCH
GILDERSOME (Bridge Street) 0-0 LRBC
LRBC SECURE PREMIERSHIP STATUS FOR NEXT SEASON
A battling display saw LRBC cling on for a point with their opponents missing a penalty in each half as they searched for the breakthrough. In truth the better chances fell to LRBC although Gildersome did have the majority of the possession, and LRBC 'keeper Anthony Thorpe's flying save denied what looked like a certain goal late in the second half.
The game's most controversial moment occured midway through the second half when Gildersome striker Steve Woodbine clearly elbowed LRBC defender Gareth Carey Jones in the build-up to the second penalty. Although Carey Jones will regret his attempts to pull the striker back there was no excuse for the violent retaliation.
The referee did not take any action following that incident, but other than that had a good game and was spot on for the decision for the first penalty. After starting the game with ten men awaiting the arrival of midfielder Jonny Hoy, LRBC had begun to take charge with eleven players on the pitch, before left-back Ashley Trueman was tempted into a mistimed challenge. Fortunately for LRBC the spot kick was blasted high over the corner of the goal.
Sandwiched between the penalties LRBC had good chances. Jonathan Parkinson's chip when through on goal drifted narrowly over and the same played was unable to direct a header on goal following a corner. Defender Stephen Robinson also had his first half shot blocked following a goal-mouth scamble. In addition to these chances LRBC striker Ed Jackson also saw his header come back off the post, and Parkinson's shot from the edge of the box flashed just over the bar.
Gildersome will of course rue the two missed penalties with the second once again been sent high and wide of the target. But overall LRBC certainly had as many chances and arguably deserved at least a draw.
Overall this is progress for LRBC who will stay in the same division for the first time since their re-entry to the league four years ago. Ending the pattern of promotion followed by relegation was the key footballing aim for their season, a target achieved with one game to spare, making next week's clash with St John's at Abbey Grange LRBC's first league game in four seasons with nothing at stake.
