LEAGUE MATCH
Chapel Allerton 5-1 LRBC
MID-SEASON SLUMP CONTINUES
Gareth Carey Jones reports...
Another difficult day for LRBC and a third league defeat on the bounce meaning their last win was November's demolition of Shipley St Peter's. Once again the LRBC manager switched round his midfield options, but to no avail as they were again beaten by a more composed and organised Chapel A outfit. The industrious Luke Walsh was left out for the silky skills of Mike Philpott but, despite some promising football in the first-half, and an impressive and disciplined performance from holding midfielder Joe Wilson, LRBCs opponents had too much possession, and too much time and space. If LRBC are to match the top teams, they need to combine a much bigger appetite for marking tightly and stopping the opposition playing, alongside greater composure in possession, and a much greater desire to get on the end of attacking moves. LRBC failed to get on the end of a string of dangerous crosses and corners.
Defensive mistakes in the first half meant LRBC trailed 2-0 at half-time despite an improved performance going forward. David Turner, starting his first game for several months, will be disappointed to have conceded possession cheaply in his own half, but LRBC were slow to respond to the danger, which allowed the Chapel A strikers to combine for a well-taken volleyed goal. The second goal came from a needlessly conceded corner with 'keeper Anthony Thorpe and Ashley Trueman failing to communicate. Questions will also be asked of Thorpe's failure to claim the resulting cross which was headed in from under the cross-bar.
Despite the scoreline LRBC approached the second half encouraged that they could expose Chapel A's defensive frailties and introduced Luke Walsh to try to put more pressure on Chapel A's midfield play-makers. But hope of an LRBC comeback were dented when Chapel A extended their lead in the opening seconds of the second half. Careless play from LRBC's own kick-off conceded possession and left the back four isolated. Once again Chapel A kept their composure to make the most of the situation and make it 3-0.
Fourth and fifth goals followed later in the half before a late LRBC rally saw Joe Wilson score a consolation from close range, and Jez Jarvis miss a golden opportunity for his first goal for the club after James Burgess curled a spectacular 25-yard free kick onto the bar.
