LEAGUE MATCH
BRIDGE STREET 1-1 LRBC

LATE PENALTY DENIES LRBC VICTORY

An unfortunate penalty ten minutes from time cost LRBC victory in a tight contest against their local rivals. Avoiding defeat to Bridge Street in the league is another first for the current LRBC team, but satisfying as that is, the team will again feel that it was a game they should have won.

Luke Walsh's second half strike had looked like it would secure the points for LRBC, with Bridge Street already having been reduced to ten men following an elbow to the stomach of LRBC defender Stephen Robinson. Walsh's goal, an excellent low finish from the edge of the box from James Burgess's pull back, once again shows how the team are beginning to ease the burden of goalscoring on veteran strikers Ed Jackson and Jonathan Parkinson, who are without a league goal between them this season.

LRBC had started the game slowly and, as with most games this season so far, failed to get close enough to their opponents, allowing them time and space to dictate the play. However, the experienced LRBC back-line, including the excellent Arash Amindoust at left-back, restricted their opponents to few shooting opportunities. Manager Gareth Carey Jones's decision to switch to an unfamiliar 4-3-3 formation may not have helped matters and the return to 4-4-2 midway though the half released Man of the Match James Burgess from the right-hand side and allowed LRBC to exert more pressure on the Bridge Street back line. Neat interplay created a shooting opportunity for Jackson who's low shot was well saved, and Danny Sykes was only inches away from converting Burgess's low cross at the back post.

The second half saw few changes in the pattern of the game, with LRBC's main attacking threat still coming from Burgess, who's Theirry Henry like-ability to hold the ball up and reach the by-line down LRBC's left-side, would eventually bear fruit. As the game wore on midfielder Danny Sykes strong running allowed LRBC to even up the midfield contest, and Sykes himself could have opened the scoring for LRBC in the same move that led to the goal. Sykes failed to make contact at the near-post after Burgess's surge to the by-line allowing the ball to roll through to Walsh who picked up his second league goal of the season.

Although ten-man Bridge Street carried on attacking in search of an equaliser, LRBC defended solidly and looked likely to hold on. However, Carey Jones and Sykes failure to deal cleanly with a Bridge Street long-throw led to the ball dropping onto Sykes' arm and the referee awarding a penalty. Not even Anthony Thorpe, who has an excellent track record saving penalties, could get near the firmly struck and well-placed penalty. LRBC pushed forward in seach of a winner and Danny Sykes could have won it when his powerful run took him clear of the defence, but his cross-shot drifted wide.
