LEAGUE
LRBC 1-1 BRIDGE STREET

BROWNNUTT FROM THE HALF-WAY LINE

Gareth Carey Jones reports

LRBC began the season with an impressive performance against last years runners-up and picked up what could prove to be an invaluable point later in the season. Although Bridge Street had the greater share of possession LRBC will feel they created more of the games opportunities; a sign of the progress the clubs making as an attacking threat. Theres still more to come going forward, but it will be tough to surpass the effort levels and commitment to defending displayed in this game.

The game will also go down in LRBC folklore as the game in centre-half Duncan Brownnutt scored his first goal. The defender finally succeeded with one of his legendary 80 yard punts with the Bridge Street keeper misjudging the bouncing ball to give LRBC lead midway though the first half. LRBC will feel they deserved their lead and could have extended it if Steve Robinsons header had dropped the right side of the post, but they were unable to maintain their advantage for long. Former LRBC player James Burgess raced on to a through-ball to finish expertly and make it 1-1 at half time.

The half-time team talk focussed on the need to ensure Burgess was not allowed space again to show his undoubted ability and Eddie Kirkhams success in keeping him quiet was shown by the strikers decision to switch sides and try to get the better of Arash Amindoust; but the LRBC left-back proved just as effective as his team-mate and denied Burgess the time and space he thrives on. The key moment of the second half saw LRBC keeper Elliot Johnson make a magnificent save from a close range header. A number of Bridge Street players had already begun their celebrations when Johnson plunged low to his right to turn the ball around the post; some were heard to compare to the save to Gordon Banks famous save in the 1970 World Cup!

Injuries in the second half meant LRBC erred on the side of caution and had to rely on break-away attacks, particularly late on in the half. However, they continued to create chances, with Jonathan Parkinsons header going straight at the keeper and substitute David Turner narrowly wide with a free-kick. This game was one of the few where it could be said that everyone played at or very near their best, and although Bridge Street selected Brownnutt for the man of the match, Robinson and Johnsons both deserve special mention for their performances.
