"Welcome to Little Rock AFB, home of the world's finest Air Traffic Controllers..."
The Little Rock AFB Tower opened in September 1955. The first types of aircraft stationed at Little Rock included B-47s, KC-97s, KC-135s, and F-101s. The C-130 Hercules was stationed at Little Rock in 1970. Since 1971, LRAFB has served as the primary C-130 training base for all DoD agencies, all branches of the U.S. Armed Services and the U.S. Coast Guard, and students from 27 different allied nations. The wing's primary training mission is training C-130 aircrew members in initial, tactical, and instructor aircrew positions. The LRAFB Tower is the busiest single runway tower facility in the Air Force, with over 143,000 operations during fiscal year 2000. The 314th Operations Support Squadron hosts over 2,000 C-130 students annually.
The new control tower opened in January 2001. Additions include ARTS IIE, ETVS communications console, a clearance delivery position, and the combination of RFC and tower into one facility. Until August 2000, the LRAFB GCA (Ground Controlled Approach) provided radar arrival services to aircraft. Today Little Rock National Airport (LIT) provides apprach and arrival services for LRAFB. The RFC (Radar Final Controller) still provides PAR (Precision Approach Radar) approaches and monitors ILS approaches for training.
