LOS ANGELES � For the past five weeks Linkin Park have been making audiences come alive on Ozzfest, but last week they worked their magic on a desert.

The Southern California rock-rap group shot a video on Thursday for the song "In the End" in which the bandmembers rock out in a barren desert that comes to life.

"What initially gave me the idea is that the song doesn't really have a resolution," said DJ Joseph Hahn, who co-directed the clip with Nathan Cox (System of a Down, Disturbed). "It starts really empty with piano and ends off really empty. I wanted to go through that cycle, with this desert landscape at the beginning and the end but there's been this evolution and everything's grown."

Hahn found inspiration for the clip from the paintings of Alphonse Mucha, who helped shaped the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mucha often painted figures encased in thin, twining stems, which inspired shots in the video where vines from the desert plants extend and wrap around the bandmembers.

"In the End" is the third single from Linkin Park's double-platinum debut, Hybrid Theory, which is at #11 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

The band shot the clip in Culver City, California, during a break from Ozzfest, on which they appear with Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson and Papa Roach.

"Ozzfest is cool because we haven't done a metal metal festival before," MC Mike Shinoda said. "In a way, we're introducing kids to our type of music and the different things that we bring � the hip-hop elements and the electronic elements. And then at the same time there's kids coming from kind of the same background as us, checking out some metal bands for the first time."

Linkin Park plan to spend the fall with Stone Temple Pilots and Staind on the third edition of the Family Values tour, founded by Korn in 1998 (see "Linkin Park To Join STP, Staind On Family Values").

"Part of the reason we wanted to do it is we love Stone Temple Pilots," Hahn said. "Family Values is also something we always looked up to � it's always been a cool tour as far as the diversity it brings, mixing up rock and hip-hop groups."

Hahn said he hoped organizers would beef up the hip-hop side of this year's lineup by adding an act like Outkast or Jurassic 5.

Following "In the End," the band hopes to release "Papercut" as the fourth single from Hybrid Theory. The song recently was released as an overseas single.

Linkin Park have been using downtime on the road to work on material for their second album, which they hope to record early next year.
