Event:The jovial shoot of Linkin Park's video for 'In The End'

Who says video shoots are dull, humourless affairs? Right now, Linkin Park are pissing themselves laughing.

We're in between takes, on the last day of this three day shoot. The Park boys are being entertained by a bluegrass duo called Chicks With Dixie, who are toting an acoustic guitar and a banjo. As the preposterous pair play their special virsions of Linkin Park's own tracks 'One Step Closer' and 'Crawling', Chester Bennington and co quite literally fall to the floor, convulsing with merriment.

The band have snuck this shoot into a rare block of days off from the travelling US Ozzfest. After today's filming, they will take another five-hour flight over to the East Coast, to resume the live mayhem. Among the set's inevitable special guests today are Mawk from (hed)planet earth, ands well as Chester Bennington's glamourous sife Samantha who is dressed in a backless gown.

As with the surreal 'Papercut' video, this one is being co-directed by the dreadlocked Nathan 'Karma' Cox and the band's DJ Joe Hahn. The latter, in particular, seems more excited about the process of making the clip than actually appearing in it. He confesses to being a techie, who always wanted to be a computer Graphics artist.

"I've had an idea in mind for this video ever since 'Papercut'", says Hahn. "We did a lot for a very little budget on that one, but this time we have a big budget we get to work with all these people we respect."

Lookinh round the studios - where Nirvana shot their classic 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video - you can instantly see where the extra cash has gone. A castle, a moat, and several gargoyles all pay their parts in the set, which benifits from the employment of set designer, Patrick Tatopoulos, who worked on 'Independance Day' and 'Godzilla' among others.

The massive faux stone stage, on which the band are performing, looks like it was designed to recal the intricate architecture of the Mayans or the Aztechs, but with a futuristic slant.

While vocalists Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda bob and weave as the camera rolls, the rest of the band mime to the playback. Guitarist Brad Delson, wearing his usual brightly coloured headphones, leaps from stone to stone, narrowly avoiding collisions again and again with Phoenix, his bass-playing bandmate.

Digital backgrounds and effects will later be added to the action.

Says Joe Hahn, "It will all start in the desert, and by the end it will look like a meadow. This is more fantasy based than science fiction, very surreal, very Dali-esque. Maybe a little bit of Terry Gilliam in there. We wanted to be very fairy-tale-ish. We're heading back out to the Ozzfest and every off day I'm going to be flying back out and checking out on the special effects."

He laughs to himself at the thought of the wierd creations that have yet to be computer-generated and implemented.

"there's going to be a whale that flies around in the sky!" He grins.

Nurse, the screens. Can't wait to see it...
