Join me for an aerobic and beauty appreciation hike in the closest-to-wilderness place I know of around these parts. Formerly, and still, an equestrian riding area, Teague Hill includes primitive trails, an absence of trail names or signs, but beautiful and mostly untouched forest and flora. I'll do my best to come up with a route that we haven't done recently, and we will plan on doing 5-7 miles, with 1500-2000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. This is NOT an easy hike, and I would like to go at a reasonably brisk pace so please come only if you are in reasonably good shape. Bring lunch, plenty of liquid and a sense of adventure - as with the fallen trees across quite a few trails we experienced last month - there often seems to be something new or different. Layered clothing is recommended as well as footwear with good deep tread. We will meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO THE TENNIS COURTS. From 280, take the Woodside Road exit, and then take Woodside Road to and then through Woodside for 1.2 miles. The school will be on you left soon after the firehouse. Turn into the parking lot right next to the tennis courts, not anywhere else. If for any reason this parking lot is full or inaccessible, we will meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Town Hall that is back 0.6 mile (0.6 mile from 280). Apparently there is no public transportation into Woodside, so I would like to offer a ride to anyone who can't or doesn't want to drive. I will be leaving from De Anza College at 10:20 AM or we could possibly negotiate another pick-up point where there is public transit. Call or email me to arrange either. There are usually no restrooms open at the Woodside School, and definitely none in Teague Hill. Heavy rain or threat of cancels. Event covers 5-7 miles, with 1500-2000 feet of elevation. Meeting location: Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO TENNIS COURTS Leader: Craig Keith, 408/227-0196, [email protected]

Gooseberry Cross Country Ski Trip
(Advanced Beginner/Intermediate)
This trip is designed to challenge the advanced beginner or intermediate cross-country skier. We will start at the Gooseberry Trailhead and climb about 2,000 feet to the "Knob". As we go, we'll be rewarded with a beautiful and striking view of the Emigrant Wilderness. Maybe we'll get a look at Cleo's Baths, all snowed in. Once we get to the knob, we'll break to take in the beautiful views. At this point we have a choice to ski down groomed trail or to take the trail to Crabtree. There, you will view across the Emigrant Wilderness and into Yosemite where you can see (with binoculars) half-dome and other familiar peaks. Upon returning to the cabin, we can soak tired bones in the hot tub as we watch snowflakes descend to earth. On Sunday, we'll take Frasier Flat route down the south side of Strawberry ridge through the woods down to the bottom. Returning, we will follow the South Fork of the Stanislaus up to Strawberry. No X-C equipment? It can be rented up there. Ninety dollars covers two nights accommodations; two breakfasts and two lunch fix'ins and one dinner. Please send your check made out to Sierra Singles to Joe Schmidt 3336-2 Brittan Avenue, San Carlos, CA 94070-3413. I would be happy to answer any questions. This event may be co-listed with other groups such as the Ski Touring Section and Bay Chapter. Rain is welcome and doesn't cancel ... think snow! Event covers 4 miles, with 500 feet of elevation. Crystal Springs Newcomer's Hike
After a long hiatus, we are again having a Newcomer's Hike. If you are new to LPSS, this is a chance to get to meet people and see what events you might like. If you are experienced, share what you know and meet the new folks. This is a great hike for meeting and socializing, followed by good, cheap food and live music. What could be better? We will meet at Sawyer Camp Trail, which runs along Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo at 3:00pm, 3:15pm actual departure. This trail is wide, flat and paved, which facilitates conversation. I lead walks at a pace more suited to enjoying the wonderful views, looking for wildlife, and enjoying conversation than to getting aerobic exercise. We will walk for about ninety minutes (about 4 miles). Children are welcome. After the walk, we deserve some tasty calories, so we will go to Micha's, at 1754 Laurel in San Carlos. Micha's features home cooking, lots of BBQ, and reasonable prices. They have live music, usually jazz or blues starting at 7pm. Vegetarians will like the portabella sandwich. You are welcome to bring beer or wine, and they have a low corkage fee. Feel free to bring a bottle of wine to share. It's a friendly place! Please bring cash to pay for your meal. Directions: Sawyer Camp Trail, which starts where Crystal Springs Road intersects Skyline Blvd. Parking is on the street in the immediate vicinity of the trailhead. This is accessed from Hwy 280 by taking the 'Bunker Hill Drive' exit. This exit is one exit North of where Hwy 92 crosses 280. FROM THE SOUTH: take the Bunker Hill Drive. exit off 280 and go left at the stop sign. This will take you over the freeway overpass. At the next stop sign, go right, and follow this road down the hill (~1 mile) until you get to the trail head, which will be a large iron gate on your left. FROM THE NORTH: take the Bunker Hill Drive, Hwy 35, Hwy 92 W exit (all one exit), off 280 and take the first right after you get off the freeway. Follow this road down the hill to the trailhead, as described above. Please leave yourself some extra time to locate the trailhead so you won't miss the group! Meet between the two benches that are just past the restroom at the start of the trail. The trail is accessed by walking past the large iron gate at the trailhead. The restroom is just past the iron gate, and will be on your left, as will the benches. (There are actually 2 entrances to this trail, so this meeting spot will make sure we catch everyone. Don't look for us at the iron gate -- we'll be inside, a few yards along the beginning of the trail. No RSVP, but for information contact Peter Andree (650)400-4071 or [email protected]
