The Characters
Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is a young orphan who is cast away to Lowood, a charity school, by her cruel aunt. When she turns 18 she goes off to Thornfield Hall, a misterious manor house, to work as a governess. There, she will despair about the feelings she develops for her employer.

Helen Burns
At Lowood, Jane is befriended by Helen, a girl who is to teach her the importance of forgiveness and faith. Unfortunately, Helen dies from typhus.
Edward Fairfax Rochester
He's Thornfield Hall's master. Sarcastic, intelligent, misterious and tormented, he finds himself falling in love with Jane, even though there are some dark secrets that should prevent him from being drawn to her. He's 38 years old.
She's after Rochester's money and it seems that their marriage is imminent. From the moment she sets foot in Thornfield Hall, she becomes Jane's rival.

James Barbour (Rochester)

St. John Rivers
Rivers, a young clergyman, aides a homeless Jane after she's left Thornfield. He asks her to marry and accompany him to India on a missionary voyage. In the novel, he's Jane's cousin, but not so in the musical.
Stephen Buntrock  (St. John)
Adle Varens
This little girl is the daughter of one of Rochester's former lovers, Celine, and is supposed to be his daughter as well, although he strongly doubts it. Anyway, he has taken the child as his ward and has looked after her since her mother abandoned her; she's Jane's young charge.
