Yellowstone Mammouth Hotsprings Area
Mammouth Hot Springs has a layer of limestone. Superheated water bubbles up through the limestone and gathers minerals. These minerals are left behind as calcite, similar to stalagtites and stalagmites in a cave. The effect is rather like a mountain turning itself inside-out.
Hymen Terrace with Palette Springs in the background. Angel Mound with a spring dripping over the side. Calcite remains behind.
Liberty Cap was once an active hot spring with quite a build up. A sapling is growing out of Liberty Cap.
Mamouth Hotsprings -- essentially Jupiter Springs -- as seen from the road.
The main terrace of Mammouth Hot Springs.
Orange Mound and its active hot spring.
Minerva Terrace.
