Union of Maine Visual Artists Exhibition: SHELTER
Blum Gallery
College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine

42 paintings; approximate total area: 31" X 20"
The paintings are wall mounted in the stylized form of a "house"
with a faint pencil line tracing this house shape.
This signage accompanies my piece:
TAKE ONE!
My ARTPIECE: FREEHOLD is a participatory installation involving a series of small oil
paintings and the audience. Rather than a single statement via a single painting,
I suggest an ongoing dialogue, an evolving process and a lessening of availability.
PLEASE take a painting of your choice.
The imagery of each painting, while varying in color and composition, remains constant;
intimate portraits of a home within the landscape. As the paintings disappear, I intend
only a trace be left behind - an idea - a sort of deconstruction - an illustration
of the psychology of the proprietary, of the "have and have not's" - the fortunates
vs. the unfortunates.
As a gesture of mutual generosity,
a nominal donation of $10.00, or $20.00
(whatever you can give) is suggested.
These proceeds will be given in full to
THE EMMAUS HOMELESS SHELTER,
Ellsworth Maine.
Here are some detail images
The following poem is written directly on the wall, one word directly under each piece,
and will be revealed word by word as each piece is taken:
A home is Spirit, Ritual, Love
four walls and a roof
seems so simple.
Gives us sanctuary from oppressors,
Shelter From The Cold.
When we have an Address
we can build a Life
Asylum all our own,
refuge in times of strife.
