| Richie Havens was the opening performer at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. The folk singer, at age 60, energized his audience by playing his guitar so vigorously that it had to be tuned frequently between numbers. Havens' song catalog includes songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, 10CC, himself, and Steely Dan. His concerts always draw large audiences, but he frequently changes record labels. Fortunately, A&M released these two sets in 1976 and 1977, and I had my copies handy for his signature following a 2001 show at Asheville, North Carolina's Grey Eagle Club. The same venue hosted Woodstock alums Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, lead guitarist and bassist extrordinaire of Hot Tuna (formerly Jefferson Airplane), that same year. YELLOW FEVER is perhaps the most difficult of their CDs to locate because it has been out of print for many years. |
