The Long Haul 

Mac’s House 4AM 

Mac awoke to the sound of her phone ringing 
“AAAAARRGH who on earth is ringing me at 4:00am” she 
muttered. 
“Hello Mackenzie”, she grumbled into the phone. “WHAT 
Bill at this hour are you joking, what sort of a case 
is it?…….. a serial killer…………. Yep all right sure 
I’ll just call the others, thanks a lot Bill. Oh yeah 
and by the way Bill do you ever sleep?” Mac hung up 
the phone and rolled back onto the bed, the others 
were not going to like this one bit especially Oscar. 

Pete’s House 4:10am 

Ring Ring Ring Ring. Church stirred slightly there was 
this ringing sound in the back of his head that just 
wouldn’t go away. He then realised it was the phone 
beside his bed. As he was waking up he fumbled for the 
phone. 
“Yeah who the hell is it?”…… Mac…….what are you 
serious? Do you know what time it is ……. Yeah I’ll 
be there in 10 mins”. The phone falls out of his hand 
and onto the ground as he slowly makes his way out of 
bed. 

Danni’s House 4:16am 

“Hey you two do you realise what time it is?” 
complained Angie as she collapsed down on Danni’s 
couch as soon as they had walked in the front. 
“Err no why?” questioned a tired stone. 
“Well I hate to be the one to tell you this but it is 
4:16am, she paused before she went on, “we also have 
to be at work in the next hour and a half said a calm 
Ang. 
“ WHAT are you serious?” exclaimed an outraged Danni. 
“ I’m serious, as I’ll ever be Danni, anyway it wasn’t 
my idea to stay out late on a Sunday night”. 
“Well it wasn’t my idea either it was Stonys”. 
“Hey that’s not fair, you two wanted to stay out as 
much as I did and anyway it was my birthday”. whined 
Oscar 
“Ring Ring Ring Ring!!! 
“Ah saved by the phone” exclaimed Oscar. 
“Well Danni are you going to get that?” asked Angie 
“Yeah I’m going to get it, I’m just taking my time 
hoping that whoever it is will stop”. But the phone 
didn’t stop it just kept ringing and ringing. 
“Oh Danni will you just get the phone” screamed Angie. 
“Fine I will muttered as she picked it up. 
“It was probably Mac asking her to go into work now” 
yeah your probably right judging from the look on her 
face” laughed Angie as a glum faced Danni walked back 
into the room. “Laugh all you want you two but that 
was just Mac and she wants all of us down at the 
factory now”. 
“What for” whined both Angie and Stone. 
“ She didn’t say she said to just be there in 15 
minutes. 
“Ok then so much for us going to bed”. 

The Factory 4:35am 

“Where the hell is he”? screamed an angry Mac, “he was 
supposed to be here 10 minutes ago”. 
“Go easy on him Mac he’s obviously not used to getting 
up at this time after going to bed late” said Oscar 
“ Fine I will go easy on him since it was your 
birthday and we all went to bed late, but this isn’t 
the first time he has been late”, I'll give him 
another 5 mins, if he isn’t here by then we’ll just 
start the briefing without him”. Mac shouted over her 
shoulder as she stormed into her offices as the phone 
rang slamming the door behind her leaving the others 
just staring at each other. Danni was the first one to 
break the silence. 
“Ange I think you should go in and talk to her and 
find out what’s wrong, she’s been in the office for 
over 7mins”. 
“why me ?” whispered Angie afraid Mac would hear her. 
“well you are the closest one to her besides Pete and 
she tells you anything.” Piped up Stone 
“ok I'll try but I’m not going to promise I'll get 
something out of her, you know how secretive she can 
be.” Said Angie as she walked to the door of Macs 
office and knocked quietly on it, she waited for an 
answer from Mac but she heard nothing. 
“knock again” whispered Danni, so Angie knocked again 
but she still got no answer, she turned to look at the 
others they were urging her to go in. So as quietly as 
she could she opened the door and walked in. 
“Mac can we talk?” whispered Ange with her back still 
facing Mac as she closed the door. Mac didn’t reply so 
she turned around and was supprised to see her sitting 
at her desk with her head in her hands. She was 
obviously crying about something. Angie walked quickly 
towards Macs’ desk 
“Mac are you alright?” she asked as she reached Mac 
who was now trembling. Ange reached out her hand and 
placed it on Macs shoulder, just she just shrugged it 
off. That left Ange standing there thinking. Something 
has obviously happened. She thought to herself and it 
must be something terrible because she had never seen 
Mac cry like that before not even when she had had the 
AIDS scare some months ago or even when Oscar was in 
hospital after he had been shot. 
“Mac” she said this time in a firmer tone. That got 
Macs attention. When she looked up Angie could see 
that her eyes were red and she had tears streaming 
down her face. This can’t be good Ange thought. She 
looked back at Mac when she started speaking 
“Pete” she whispered her voice trembling as she spoke. 
“ What about Pete urged on Ange careful not to push 
Mac into telling her. 
“He……(sniff)was on his way….(sniff) over here and he 
was………… in a car accident” she managed to mumble out 
before she broke down into tears once more. 
“oh Mac I’m so sorry” was all Angie could say as she 
put here arm around Mac, she knew how close her and 
Pete were. “ Is he alright?” she added not knowing if 
she would get a reply. “ Angie jumped at the sound of 
Macs voice, 
“He is in surgery at the moment but he isn’t off the 
critical list 

Outside Macs office 

Meanwhile outside of the office Stone was leaning 
against Danni’s car while Danni was pacing up and down 
in front of Oscar who was just about ready to kill her 
“Danni for the last time just stop and stand still you 
are really getting on my nerves.” 
“But I want to know what is going……….. Danni stopped 
in mid sentence as Ange and Mac walked out tears 
streaming down both of their faces. 
“Ange what’s happened?” asked a worried Stone. 
It’s…..It’s………Pete she managed to say before she 
started crying again. 
“What happened to Pete, “is he alright asked Danni. 
“He….was ……in….a…a..ccar accident and they have rushed 
him to hospital he is in surgery as we speak. Mac 
managed to mumble before she turned and went back into 
her office locking the door behind her. The others 
were left hugging Angie as tears started to fall from 
all their eyes. 

Macs office 

Once she was inside her office she slumped against the 
locked door as started sobbing softly to her self with 
the radio playing softly in the back ground, why 
couldn’t she tell the others the truth about Pete, all 
she had to say to them was Pete didn’t make it that he 
died instantly. She pushed those thoughts to the back 
of her head as a familiar song came on to the radio, 
the words rolled through her mind as they were being 
sung

As the song came to an end Mac slid down the back of 
the door bringing her knees up close as she came 
nearer the ground. More tears started to spill out of 
her eyes as she remembered the first time she had 
heard that song. It was about two years ago now when 
she and Pete had first gotten together. They were on 
what seemed like their 100th date together when this 
song started playing, they had both gotten up at the 
same time to dance. While they were dancing Pete had 
whispered “ can this be our song” she had whispered 
back a soft “yes” 

Now here she was two years later whishing that she and 
Pete were still together and that Bernie hadn’t broken 
them up all those years ago. She let her head drop 
into her hands as she thought how she would tell the 
others the truth. 

MEANWHILE IN THE BRIEFING ROOM 

“I just can’t believe it,” said Danni who was going to 
start crying any minuet. 
“How could this happen?” 
“I don’t know Dan, you know I always thought that one 
of us would end up in hospital, from lousy backup or 
something, but not from a stupid…stupid car accident 
caused by some maniac driver” Angie muttered those 
last few words as she burst into tears followed by 
Danni. 
“ Ange, Dan it’ll be alright Pete is strong he’ll pull 
through this but now we just have to be strong for 
Mac, if we all lose it there will be no one left to 
run this place and it can’t run by itself” Oscar said 
he knew he had to be strong for the girls. 
“ Did you see Mac before?” sobbed Ange she is a mess, 
she was worse though when I was in her office, was 
sitting at her desk shivering, I’d never seen her like 
that before.” 
“None of us have Ange but as I said before Pete is 
strong and he’ll pull through this” 
“How can you be so sure of that Stone?” asked Danni 
“I just know Pete, and I was in the same situation 
some months ago and I pulled through didn’t I”? Was 
all he said. 
“I have a feeling that Mac is keeping something from 
us” muttered Ange “ when I was in her office and she 
came to the part where Pete had been rushed into 
surgery or something like that she paused before she 
said anything like she was trying to cover something 
up”. 
“ But what would she be covering up Ange?” asked a 
curious Danni 
“ I don’t know that is what I am trying to figure 
out”. 
“Ange, Stone, Danni whispered Mac. They all turned at 
the sound of her voice. 
“ Are you alright Mac?” asked Oscar “No not really, 
but just listen to me for a minuet there is something 
that I have to tell you” 
“ What is it Mac?” whispered Ange 
“ Well you know how I said that Pete had…. Had been 
rushed into surgery well…well I lied”. 
“Well then where is he?” questioned Danni. 
“I didn’t know how to say this before but……but now I 
do, Pete wasn’t rushed into surgery he died instantly 
at the scene 
“Mac are you sure your alright, I mean why didn’t you 
tell us this before?” 
“I just didn’t know how to tell you and……..and I also 
didn’t want to believe it was true” she said as her 
knees buckled under her and she collapsed onto the 
couch in tears. Angie rushed over and sat down next to 
her hugging her in close to her. 
“It’ll be all right, calm down now” was what she said 
over and over. Meanwhile Danni and Oscar just stood 
there watching not knowing what to do. It was the 
first time they had ever seen Mac fall apart like 
this. After a minuet of standing there listening to 
Angie’s soft voice and Macs quiet sobs, Danni decided 
to ask Mac how it happened. 
“Hey Mac” Danni asked in a soft voice 
“ Do they know how Pete was killed?” 
“ They…….They think it has something to do with a 
serial killer that kills his victims by what car they 
drive, I know it sound stupid but it is true. Mac 
stopped as the phone in her office started ringing 
“it’s probably homicide” she said as she ran into her 
office to answer the phone 


Inside Macs Office 

“Mackenzie” she said in her no nonsense business like 
tone. “OH Bill it’s you”…….. “Your at the scene now……. 
WHAT parts of a bomb were found under the front 
tire…….this is the case you wanted us to work on, but 
hang on Bill, it doesn’t match the description of the 
rest of the killings……yeah I know but that means the 
killer new Pete and where he lived and probably where 
he worked…..which means the killer probably knows who 
the rest of us are the whole units compromised, we are 
going to have to relocate now so we can get going on 
the case”…….No Bill I wont calm down I just lost one 
of my closest friends to this…this maniac…….yes our 
unit will still work on the case…….yeah yeah ok we’re 
a strong unit we’ll pull through, thanks for calling 
Bill”. She placed the phone down and walked back into 
the briefing room. “Guys that was Hollister, he is at 
the scene of the accident now with his team from 
Homicide and they have just founds remains of a bomb 
on the tire of Pete’ car. 
“ What?” exclaimed Ange 
“What else did he say? Asked Danni 
“Well you know that case we are supposed to be working 
on well this is it” 
“What are you serious Mac?” asked Oscar 
“Mac are you sure we can handle this case I mean we 
are to closely involved”. Said Ange 
The others nodded in agreement. 
“ Well I already considered that, but I know we are a 
strong unit and we can handle anything that is thrown 
at us”. 
“But Mac……” Stone and Ange both said 
“No buts guys where doing the case and that’s that.” 
“When is Pete’s funeral?” asked Danni in a quiet voice 
“I’m not sure they have to contact his sister before 
anything is final.” 
“So what’s this case about” asked Angie. 
“Ok before I tell you the case I’ve got some bad 
news”. 
“Well it can’t be any worse than finding out that 
Pete is dead”, mumbled Oscar 
“That’s true but, since Church’s death doesn’t match 
the other killings. Homicide think that the killer is 
stepping up in what he dose, and also that the killer 
probably new Pete and that he worked hear, since he 
followed his victims before he killed them, so 
Hollister wants us to relocate before we start the 
case”, said Mac 
“When are we moving?” asked Danni 
“In the next two or three days, which means we have 
to start packing now”. Said Mac in her business like 
tone 
“But Mac wouldn’t the killer now know who we are, I 
mean if they new Pete and where he worked they 
probably know who the rest of us are, the whole units 
compromised” said Angie 
“Yes Ange the whole unit is compromised but Hollister 
said the commissioner is going to step up the security 
at our houses and the new factory until this case is 
over”. 
“Where are we moving to?” mumbled Oscar 
“I’m not sure but I was just going to call the 
commissioner at HQ and set up a meeting. So if anyone 
needs me I'll be in my office, while you wait for me 
you can start packing up everything we need to have 
everything ready for when the truck comes. Don’t know 
when that’ll be though”. 
The only answer she got was three mumbled “yes boss” 
as she walked into her office. 


LATER ON THAT DAY 

“Ok guys I’m of to HQ if you need me for any reason 
just call, but I shouldn’t be gone for more than an 
hour then I'll be back here”. Said Mac as she got into 
her car and drove off. 
Danni was the first to speak up. “Hey Ange did you see 
the way Mac’s been acting in the last few hours?” 
“Normal. Why do you ask?” 
“Normal! Exactly. “Why does she always try to cover 
everything up. “She hardly ever expresses her emotions 
or anything. It worries me sometimes Ange.” 
“I know,” Ange replied. “She’s our boss, and she wants 
us to respect her. Bernie, our old boss never showed 
us any of his feelings that I can remember. Maybe 
there was the time when Kaye went missing but that was 
it, and any way he’s a guy it’s normal for them not to 
show their emotions, but for Mac I don’t know I think 
it’s got something to do with the fact that she 
considers her job as boss to be a job where you have 
to be strong for the unit, and can’t she that much 
emotion, she is just following in the steps of Bernie.
