Pete and Colette are at a party. Colette is introducing her friends 
to Pete.

`Pete, this is Melissa, Melissa, Pete' Colette introduces
them.
`Interesting choice' Pete says to Melissa
`I would never have pictured you as a Pete' Melissa replies
`What can I say, I liked the name. Why'd you pick
Melissa?' Pete asks
`You can't have forgotten' she says, a little taken aback.
`No. It's just a little odd calling yourself after your
unborn baby. 
Weird.'
`What can I say, I liked the name.'
`Touché.' He pauses for a second. `I thought you were
dead.'
`Do you two know each other?' Colette interrupts in a
confused tone.
`We used to' Pete and Melissa reply simultaneously. 
`What happened?'
`She died' Pete replied no emotion showing in his voice.
`He never wrote back or returned my calls.' Melissa replied,
a little 
astounded.
`I thought she was dead.'
`I think I'll leave you two to catch up. I'm going to
talk to some of 
my old friends. I'll just be over there if you need me.' She
kisses 
Pete and walks to the other side of the room.

`Killed on duty, shot in cold blood. A hero. They told me you
were 
dead.'
`Witness protection.'
`Witness bloody protection? For Christ's sake Alice, you
could have 
told me. We were supposed to be getting married or had you forgotten 
that?'
`They never told you?'
`What do you think?' 
`I wrote at least a hundred letters. I called you a thousand
times. 
You never received them?'
`NO! I bloody well did not. Do you think I would give up that
easily 
on the love of my life?'
`Mike! Calm down. We're in public.'
`I'm calm.' He replies in a more civilized tone. `I
missed you. I 
even tried to avenge your death. Great lot of good that would have 
done.'
`What are you doing now?'
`I'm still a cop.'
`You're not on the database.'
`What do you mean by that?'
`I was looking for you. I missed you too.'
`What are you doing now?'
`I'm actually starting a new job tomorrow. Witness protection
had me 
as a nurse. That's how I met Colette. The threat is over now,
though. 
I get to go back into the force.'
`Maybe I'll see you around.'
`That'd be nice.'
`I should go back over to Colette now. Bye.'
`Bye'
He starts to walk over to Colette then stops and turns back. `Can
you 
call me Pete in front of her, she doesn't know about Mike
yet.'
`Sure thing. Remember Melissa, she doesn't know about Alice
either.'
`See you around.'
He walks over to Colette. 
She walks the opposite direction and refills her drink.

The next day, Mac’s office.

‘Hey Mac, can I leave early today. I’m meeting an old
friend?’ Pete asks
‘Sure, you’ll just have to wait a little while. We’re
having someone new come today,’ she replies
‘Stone’s replacement finally here? What’s his name?’
‘His name?’ she asks mystically. ‘What makes you say it’s a
guy?’
‘Well, we can’t seriously be having a fourth female here.
Four women one guy, it upsets the balance.’
‘I thought you’d be pleased having all these women
surrounding you. It would have to be a first’ He hits her
playfully on the arm. ‘Any way,’ she continues, ‘It’s us
girls who have it hard. We’re going to have to continually
compete with each other. For the jobs of course.’
‘Of course,’ he replies.
His phone rings and he steps out the door.
‘Hi Al… Melissa. You can’t come? Have to stay at work? Ok,
that’s fine, call me when you’re free.’
He pokes his head back around the corner of Mac’s door.
‘Looks like I’ll be staying here after all.’
‘Cancelled?’ He nods, ‘No wonder.’
‘Hey!’
‘Oh look, there’s someone at the door. I should probably
get that.’ She says matter-of-factly and pushes past him
out the door. ‘Can you get everyone into the briefing room’
‘Yes boss.’
Mac leaves to get the door, Pete leaves to get everyone
else.

The briefing room.
Pete, Angie and Danni are waiting. Mac walks in with the
new recruit after showing her around the place.
‘Hi everyone this is Jordan.’ Mac introduces the new
member.
‘Jordan?’ Pete asks. Mac misses his question and continues.
‘This is Pete, this is Angie and this is Danni. I’m sure
everyone will make you feel at home, especially you Pete!’
‘Yes ma’am! Uh, Mac, can I have a quick word with you in
your office?’
‘Uh oh. You’d better be careful,’ Danni jokes.
‘Yeah sure.’ She ignores Danni and Pete and her leave the
room.

‘What’s wrong?’ Mac asks.
‘Three things. Firstly, why another woman?’
‘Pete!’
‘Secondly, why one just out of witness protection and
thirdly, why one that I used to be engaged to? Don’t you
think they would have checked that out.’
‘Wait, No. It couldn’t be.’
‘What Mac? What is it?’
‘I was sure it didn’t mean anything.’
‘Mac?!?’
‘Well I was waiting for Bill and before you start, yes Bill
Hollister and I thought I heard someone saying that IA was
planning on putting undercover operatives in with some
units to make sure no fraternization occurred. They may
have purposely overlooked your previous relationship to
give her something to work with. I was sure it didn’t mean
anything.’
‘It might not. It doesn’t matter though. It’s not as if
anything IS going on here.’
‘I’m sure you’re right. The only thing is, it might mean
they are looking for a reason to shut down the unit.
Stone’s out at the moment. If they were to remove 1 or 2
more, that would only leave 2. There’s not much point for a
two person unit.’
‘Hey, look, nothing’s going on here, Stone will be back and
the unit will stay open!’
‘Always the optimistic one.’
‘I wish. I should probably not spend anymore time than
usual in here with you. Back to work.’
‘That’d be a… miracle.’
‘Whatever.’
He leaves to sit at his desk… thinking.
