Hey everyone, I was sooooo bored that I decided to write this fic, even though I have a heap of uni work to do (i didn't really want to do it!!!) So if it's a bit dodgy, sorry but i really couldn't think too clearly!! I've got all these different ideas for fics jumping around in my brain and i got really confused what I was writing about so I changed it heaps of times, so if it doesn't flow, that's the reason. But feedback - good or bad - very much appreciated!! Louise P.S: if it's a bit long, I'm also sorry about that. I really couldn't be bothered trying to separate it!! "Ellen, thanks for coming," Harry said as he approached Mac with another Detective by his side. "Harry. Do we have the names of these two yet?" Asked Mac before looking down at the two corpses lying side by side. "Yes, Sarah Watson and James Bennett," Harry replied. Mac nodded as she listened, "right, I'll get my operatives to chase a connection between this murder and possible acquaintances to all the other victims." "Good luck. We've haven't been able to come up with anything. No links with relations, jobs or neighbours." "I'm heading to the office now, I'll see if they've come up with anything yet," Mac said as she walked towards her car. The factory~ "Mac, Oscar and I think we've found something," Angie said calling her over to where they had some files spread out. "That's great…what is it?" "What is it that all the victims have in common?" Oscar asked leaving Mac to guess. She shrugged, so he went on. "They're couples right, but they're all cheating." Mac looked closely at the files, "so you think they were committed by a jealous partner?" "Yes, but it would have to be someone who knew either of the first two lovers," Angie replied. "You're suggesting that either Kathy Ryan or Dennis Porter had something to do with the murders of John Ryan and Lindy Porter?" "Yeah," Angie replied nodding in a convincing way. Mac's brow creased, "it is possible, but don't you think homicide would have looked at that angle? Besides, it doesn't explain the connection either have with the other victims!" "There may not be a tangible link, but what if murdering their spouses was the beginning of some kind of revenge against unfaithful husbands and wives?" Oscar asked determined they were on the right track. Mac looked from Oscar to Angie and back to Oscar, "all right. I'll go to Love with that and if he is happy with what we have, we will begin discreet surveillance on Ryan and Porter." "Thanks Mac," they said happily in unison. H.Q~ Love scoffed, "you and your operatives think I can't do my job?" "Harry, it's not that. They strongly feel Ryan and Porter have something to do with the case…after all, they were one another's alibi's." "Alright, set up an operation…and Ellen, your unit better be right with this. There has been far too many murders already, we can't risk anymore." Mac nodded taking note of the added pressure Love was putting on her job. The factory~ "Well…?" Oscar asked as soon as Mac stopped her car. Mac looked up at him, pretending she didn't know what he was talking about. "What did Love say?" He asked. "He reluctantly agreed to your theory," she replied. "Everyone, briefing in five," she said as she walked into the kitchen. Oscar smiled, "so, are Angie and I going in?" "You'll find out in the briefing," Mac replied tapping Oscar on the shoulder. "Alright, the plan is this, Oscar and I will be a married couple living next to Kathy Ryan. Oscar will go away on a business trip, and that's when Pete and I will carrying on with an affair hopefully leading to Ryan and Porter taking the bait!" Pete scoffed, "that's if they're the killers." "They are, trust us, we know these things," Angie said in defence of her and Oscar's theory. Oscar piped up, "so, where do I go for my `business trip'?" "I hear there's a nice, fairly large white van around the corner," Mac replied sarcastically. "You'll be joining Angie and Danni in the com-v…anymore questions?" They all shook their heads and left. "I'll be in my office if anyone needs me." Mac and Oscar's cover house~ Oscar and Mac were walking up the path with their luggage when they noticed Kathy Ryan standing at her kitchen window watching them. Mac turned around to Oscar and whispered, "she must be they neighbourhood sticky-beak!" "Every street has to have one of those," he laughed. "She'll be watching our every move," Mac said with a smile. "More like your every move!" Oscar corrected. Mac scoffed, "well, if my husband wasn't always going off on business trips, I wouldn't have to find comfort in another way." "Always blame it on the neglectful husband…so, how long before I shoot through?" Mac looked down at her watch. "We better make an attempt to settle into our new home before you `leave', so half an hour." "What do we do in the mean time?" "Unpack!" Oscar scoffed, "I don't need to. I'll be leaving again." "I know…but I still need to unpack." About half an hour later, it was time for Oscar to leave. Angie rang Mac on her mobile. "Yes," she said into the phone. "Hi Mac. Kathy is out the front so it's probably the best time for Oscar to leave. I'll let Pete know so he can call you on the home phone and organise a `meeting'!" "Alright thanks Ange. See ya." Mac hung up and looked at Oscar. "You ready?" Oscar nodded and he walked out of the house first, holding Mac's hand. When he got to the front door, Oscar turned around to face Mac. "This shouldn't take too long…a week tops!" Oscar leant in to kiss Mac on the side of her face, whispering, "Is she watching us?" "Like a hawk!" "Well then, I better make it worth her while," he said grinning before kissing Mac deeply. "I love you honey…and I'll call you when I get there," Oscar called out as he approached the car. "I love you too," Mac replied pretending to look upset for the benefit of her neighbour. As she saw the back of the car disappear out of sight, the cordless phone rang in her hand and she took a seat on the front step. "Hello…hi Rick." "So, has hubby left yet?" "Yeah about two seconds ago," Mac replied in a voice loud enough for Kathy to hear. Pete laughed as he thought of what else to say, "how long have we got?" "A whole week," she replied seductively. "Mm, a whole week? When do you want me around?" "Right now seems like a good time to start." An hour later, there was a knock on the door. It was Pete. Mac looked out to see that Kathy was once again in her garden. "About time," she said pulling Pete closer to her and kissing him passionately. Pete pulled away slightly, "sorry about the wait but I stopped off and got us a few bottles of wine." "Mm, you read my mind…come on, I don't want the whole neighbourhood to know what I'm up to while my husband's away!" Mac stated with a raised eyebrow, looking in Kathy's direction. Pete placed his hands around Mac's waist as they made their way inside. * Angie, Danni and Oscar watched Kathy putting her hose down and creeping to the front of the cover house. "We better hope Mac and Pete are doing something in there to make it look legit. Kathy Ryan is one hell of a stickybeak!" Danni scoffed, "you got that right. When we were in there bugging her place, she has binoculars at every window, a telescope in her bedroom upstairs…" "What side of the house is her bedroom?" Oscar asked cutting in. "Oh shit, it looks directly into Mac's room," Angie recalled, picking her phone up. "Mac, you and Pete will have to look convincingly like lovers…Kathy has binoculars and telescopes set up…and you'll have to sleep together…her bedroom is right across from yours…I'll prank you when we know she's looking…have fun!" Angie hung up laughing. "What did Mac say?" Danni asked knowing it obviously didn't go down too well with her. "I can't say my mouth is too pure to repeat it!" Oscar scoffed, "yeah right. More like Mac's mouth would be too pure to say that stuff." "Kathy's going down the side of the house," Danni said as she watched the screen showing Kathy. "Better prank Mac," she smirked. * Mac picked her phone up as soon as it started ringing, "it's Ange." "How many times did she say she'd let it ring?" Pete asked. Mac shrugged, but it stopped after two rings. A horrified look spread across Mac's face like wildfire. Pete took offence, "hey I'm not that bad! Besides, it's not as if we haven't done some sneaking around before!" "That was year's ago," Mac replied matter-of-factly. "Besides, we were an item back then." "So…where should we start?" Pete asked leaning in to kiss Mac. Mac pulled back slightly before Pete made any contact. "You know I could do with a glass of red. There should be a bottle opener in the second drawer," she said directing Pete into the kitchen. While Pete was getting the bottle opener and two glasses, he saw someone at the window from the corner of his eye. He walked back into the lounge and handed Mac the glasses. "Whatever you do, don't look, but she's watching from the window behind me," he said as he opened one of the bottles and began pouring. Mac took a deep breath and sighed, "I guess we better give her something to watch then!" "Don't be so enthusiastic about this," he replied rolling his eyes. Before he knew it, Mac leant in and kissed Pete deeply, running her hand up the back of his head. Pete pulled back almost breathless. He breathed in deeply, looking straight into Mac's eyes. Both could feel the realness in the kiss, but it was still awkward. They simultaneously grabbed their glasses and both were emptied in one go. "Another one?" Pete asked Mac. "Another…" "Glass," he said holding up the bottle. "Yes, definitely," Mac replied nervously. * "She's gone back inside," Danni said watching the monitor closely. Over the wire, they could hear the dial tone of a phone. Someone picked up after a few rings. "Yes?" Asked the man's voice. "Dennis, it's Kathy," she replied. "Do we have another one?" He asked knowing what she was ringing about. "Yes. There's a young married couple who have moved in next door. No sooner did the husband leave for what I think is a business trip, the lover turned up. There's nothing too full on at the moment, but it won't be long until they're in bed…can you come over?" Dennis didn't reply straight away. "I'm sorry, I can't tonight. Lindy's parents are still here and I still have to act out the grieving widow." "Alright. I think I heard the husband say he was gone for a week, so we have plenty of time." "That's fine…I'll call you tomorrow then." "See you Dennis." * At the sound of the hang up signal, Danni, Oscar and Angie pulled their headphones off, looking around at one another. "If only they said the word `murder' we'd have them already," Danni said with a sigh. "It sounds as though they're being careful," stated Angie. "I'll call Mac, let her know they've made contact." * "Thanks Ange…yeah we will…good night," Mac said as she hung up the phone and looked at Pete. "Kathy called Dennis after she saw us kiss. She's now set herself up in her room." "Would you like me to carry you upstairs?" Pete asked with a grin. "That would be going a bit over the top!" Mac replied throwing a cushion at Pete. "Do we have any wine left?" Pete nodded, "two bottles." "Come on then," Mac said helping herself to her feet and heading towards the staircase. "You're telling me the only way you can go through with this little act, is to be drunk?" Pete asked slightly annoyed. Mac turned around to face Pete and gave him a look without saying anything. Pete was giving Mac a massage while they finished off their drinks. It didn't take them too long to finish the two bottles of wine through nervousness. Pete could only just make out a dark silhouette standing at the window of the house next door. "She's watching us," he whispered quietly in Mac's ear before softly kissing her on the neck. Pete could feel Mac's breathing getting heavier the more he touched her. Mac's body was melting beneath his touch. No matter how much they tried talking themselves into the fact this was just another job, they couldn't stop the strong emotions of pent-up desire and passion they felt for one another after all these years. Pete turned Mac around to face him, running his hand down the side of her face, drawing her in for another kiss. Mac slowly opened her eyes to see Pete lying next to her, his arms securely wrapped around her body. She carefully got out of bed and walked over to the window seeing Kathy standing there shaking her head in Mac's direction. Mac gave a sarcastic smile to Kathy before retreating downstairs. She stood on the back veranda drinking her cup of coffee, while Pete snuck up from behind and kissed her on the neck. "We've got company," he whispered in reference to the neighbour who was spying on them yet again. Mac turned to him, "I'll get you a coffee if you want one." "All I want is you," Pete replied pulling Mac to him before she could walk away. "The phone's ringing," Mac said quickly pulling away. She came back out on the phone. "Dean, hi. You were meant to call last night." Oscar was on the other end, "yeah sorry I was stuck in a meeting most of the night. What have you been up to, you sound out of breath?" Oscar asked knowing what had been going on but acting out the cover. "Uh, I was outside…watering the garden," she replied sounding nervous for Kathy's benefit. "I've got some great news. They've accepted the deal, so I'll be home late this afternoon." "What? I thought you said a week?" "No, I said a week at tops…why, what's going on?" Mac looked towards the fence and saw Kathy peering through one of the cracks. "Nothing, it's just that, well, I was hoping to have the house ready for you by the time you got back." "Sorry darl, but I'll make it up to you," Oscar stated holding back the laughter. "Roughly what time will you be home?" Oscar thought for a moment, "after lunch, so around 2." "Two," Mac repeated for Kathy's benefit. "I guess I'll see you then. Bye." Mac hung up and looked at Pete. "What's with the change of plans?" He asked angrily. Mac shook her head also trying to look upset, "The meeting went well, too well...I'm going to have my shower, are you coming." She asked seductively. With that, Kathy raced off inside her house. * "She's making another call," Danni said so the other two put their headphones back on. "Dennis, we have to do something now before her husband gets home," Kathy said hurriedly. "I thought you said we had all week." "The husband just phoned to say he's coming back at two p.m." Dennis paused before he spoke, "alright, I'll be there as soon as I can. What are they doing now?" "Showering," she replied in a disgusted tone. Oscar cut in. "She never does it with me in the shower," he joked. "She never does it with you full stop!" Angie scoffed. Oscar rolled his eyes as he continued to listen to the phone conversation. "Have you got the tools ready?" "When do I not?" "Okay, I'll see you soon. Bye." * Oscar picked up his phone and called Mac's mobile but there was no answer and it went straight to voice-mail. "Mac, it's Oscar. Porter's on his way over to Ryan's place and they're planning on doing something. We'll let homicide know. Be careful." Oscar hung up and looked at Angie and Danni worriedly, "I hope she gets that message before Porter turns up." "She didn't answer?" Angie asked. Oscar shook his head. "Why didn't Pete answer it then?" Danni scoffed, "he probably answered his own phone thinking it was that!" "Wouldn't surprise me. Unless he really is in the shower with…oh no, they wouldn't, would they?" Oscar asked but not wanting to know the answer. Angie rang Love while Oscar and Danni tried as hard as they could to get Mac and Pete to answer their mobiles or the home phone. "Homicide should be here in ten," she told the others as they kept trying. * Mac got out of the shower and walked into the bedroom with only the towel wrapped around her and saw that Pete was fast asleep on the bed. "Pete, has there been any calls?" "Mm, what?" He asked as he stirred. "Have the others rang through with any info?" "Ah, I don't know," Pete replied scratching his head. "What do you mean you don't know?" Mac asked furiously. "Bloody hell Pete! What if they were trying to call with something important?" Mac asked as she left the room and went downstairs. "Great, five messages," Mac said as she picked her phone up to listen to them. After hearing them all, she ran upstairs to get dressed. "Pete, we have a problem!" "What's happened?" "Dennis Porter is already next door and they're getting ready to `kill' us!" "Oh shit! Have they contacted homicide?" "Yeah, they've already surrounded the area." Pete and Mac went into the lounge room just as Mac's mobile began ringing again. "Mackenzie," she answered. "About time…it's me, Oscar. Porter and Ryan have exited Ryan's house and are moving to your backyard. It would probably be wise for you and Pete to be doing something." "Yep, thanks Oscar. The signal is `what are you doing in here?'" Mac looked up at Pete, "they're on their way in." Pete nodded and held his gun behind Mac's back while they kissed. Mac could see Ryan and Porter through the doors to the patio but looked away to pretend she hadn't seen them. By the time she looked up again they were standing right behind Pete, guns aimed and ready. "Excuse me, what are you doing in here?" Mac yelled pulling away from Pete's kisses. "We don't like the fact you're cheating on your husband. And no doubt you're cheating on your wife," Kathy said to Mac and Pete before digging her gun deep into Pete's back. "Who the hell are you to judge our relationship?" Mac asked trying to stall them for as long as possible. "We know what it's like to be betrayed by people like you. Your husband will be better off without you, you filthy little bitch!" "Police…drop your weapons…NOW," Harry Love said as he entered the house. "What's this?" Kathy asked shocked. "What's going on? You've spoken to the cops haven't you?" She said to Porter. Porter shook his head. "Kathy I haven't said anything, I promise. We're in this together, remember." "Kathy Ryan and Dennis Porter, you are both under arrest for the murders of John Ryan and Lindy Porter; Cassie Tourney and Brad Whittler; Steven Dobson and Michaela Barrach; and Sarah Watson and James Bennett." While Kathy and Ryan were being read their rights, Mac and Pete left the house and went back to the factory. The factory~ Angie, Oscar and Danni sat around in silence as they watched Mac and Pete arrive at the factory. "What?" Pete asked when he noticed the three pairs of eyes closely following him and Mac. "It's just…ah, nothing," Oscar decided not to mention it. "It's just what?" Mac asked not letting Oscar off that easily. Oscar sighed, "When Ryan rang Porter, she told him that the two of you were in the shower. Then, when we tried ringing both of you, there was no answer. So, we were wondering…were you in the shower together?" "What?" Mac asked taken aback by Oscar's forward question. "I don't think that would be any of your business." "It's just that, well, if you two have something going on, I want you to know that it's alright by me." Pete and Mac locked eyes for a moment, daring each other to ask what exactly was going on between them. After a few moments, Pete looked back at Oscar, "I was in bed. Mac was in the shower." Mac's phone rang interrupting Oscar's inquisition of what went on. "Yes Harry…okay, thanks for letting me know…yes, I'll pass that on…bye." Mac looked up at the group, "Harry Love said to pass on his congratulations to Oscar and Angie for their brilliant theory about Ryan and Porter being the murderers!" Oscar and Angie both smiled, quite pleased with themselves. "But there's a slight problem with your motive. It wasn't just their partners who were doing the dirty on them. It turns out Ryan and Porter were friends through primary school and one day they walked in on Ryan's father and Porter's mother in bed together. Ryan's mother committed suicide after finding out. Apparently the affair had been going on for five or six years." "Ouch!" Exclaimed Pete as he listened. "Oscar and Angie, that was good work. All right, you can all go now. Have a good weekend," Mac said allowing everyone to go home. "You too Mac," replied Angie who followed Danni and Oscar out the door. Pete stayed behind and watched Mac standing in the middle of the room. Neither were willing to speak until all the cars had gone. Once the roller door closed on the last car, Pete moved forward. "Mac, we need to talk about…" Mac cut him off, "I know. I have to write up a report and drop it off at H.Q, so do you want to meet me at my place?" "Yeah that'd be good. What time?" "I should be home by six." Pete nodded. "I'll see you then," he smiled as he walked to his car. Mac smiled as she watched Pete go. Mac's house~ "So, what's happening with the house?" "We've decided to continue doing it up, rent it out and then split the rent money." Mac hesitated for a moment, "what if you settle down with someone in the mean time?" "If and when that happens, I'll buy Danni's share out." Pete paused as he waited for Mac to look him in his eyes. "But I may not need that house. The woman I have me heart set on has a pretty neat looking house already! The only problem is, it's just got the two bedrooms, so it'd be a bit crowded for a large family!" Mac tried to hide her smile as she realised who he was talking about, "what if this `woman' doesn't want a large family?" "Tough. She's getting it whether she likes it or not! So, does she?" He asked leaning closer into Mac. "I think she might need some convincing as to why," she whispered slowly moving forward. Pete placed his hands on each side of Mac's face, carefully caressing her lips with his, before kissing her softly. Mac pulled away slightly, "I think she's convinced." Pete smiled and kissed Mac again as they fell back onto the sofa.
