PROLOGUE to untitled. (this is just the prologue. ill get the rest up eventually) "Ok guys, I think we're nearly ready to move in on the case," said Mac one morning, as she walked down her steps into the main office. Pete nodded, as Oscar scratched his nose in thought. "So how exactly are we going to do this?" he asked. Mac rolled her eyes. "I don't know what's wrong with your memory Oscar, I've told you so many times." She shook her head, as Oscar tried to defend himself. "Yeah, but I don't wanna get this wrong, I mean, it's Ang that'll suffer if I stuff up." Angie laughed, turning away from her computer. "Nice to see you care, Stoney." She said. "Unlike others," chipped in Danni, pointing at Pete, who was reading the morning's paper. Pete raised his eyebrows, and slowly lifted his middle finger in Danni's direction. She responded by sicking out her tongue. "Ok, I'll run over it one more time." Said Mac. "Oscar, when are you meeting them next?" "Tomorrow," replied Oscar. Mac nodded. "Good. Well, tomorrow, tell Matthews that you think you are ready to find a suitable victim. Say you've been with their gang for over a month, and you've had your eye on a young woman who you think is a good target." "Me?" "Yeah Ang, that's you." Confirmed Mac. "You still OK with that?" Angie nodded. "That's cool." "Anyway," continued Mac, "If they go for it, you'll pick up Angie in a park somewhere. You can take her in the bushes, and "rape" her. Come out after 10 minutes or so, and offer her around. That's how these guys work. They generally don't watch each other, but because you're new, they might be more cautious. That's when we'll come in." Oscar nodded, and pushed back his chair as he began to stand up. "Got it. Coffee anyone?" *** The next evening, Angie was walking through a park near her house, as planned. She neared the lake, feeling nervous about what was going to happen. `How did I get myself into this?' she asked herself. `Why couldn't I just have a normal job like a doctor or a teacher?' She shook her head, as she began to concentrate on the job ahead. `Too late now!' she thought. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Oscar was in front of her, along with a gang of huge, burly men. Angie looked terrified, and none of it was acting. Oscar noticed this, and almost went over to her, before remembering what he was doing. "This is her," he said, with a twisted smile. Angie made to run away, but found she was surrounded. Before she could scream, Oscar had grabbed her and covered her mouth. His touch made her relax slightly, but not much. The leader of the rape gang smiled. "Nice, very nice." He turned to face the rest of the men. "Well boys, Robbo's found us a real treat tonight. Pretty too." They began cheering, and Angie felt her fear rising again. Oscar tightened his grip, trying to tell her it was ok. "So, let's get this started!" said Matthews. He pointed at Oscar, and cocked his head towards the bushes. "Go on, we're following you." "What?" stammered Oscar. This wasn't how it was supposed to work. He was supposed to get privacy for the job. Matthews smiled. "Don't worry mate, this is just a little test. You know, check you're who you say you are. And check that you go through with this." "If, if I'm not?" asked Oscar weakly, thinking about his options. Matthews pulled out a gun from his pocket. "Then you and your little friend here will say goodbye." Angie attempted to get out of Oscar's strong grasp, but she wasn't able to. She slumped her body beside him, and let him lead her into the bushes. Eventually they reached a clearing, which Matthews was satisfied with. "Go on, we're waiting. The longer you take the long we wait." The other members backed up his statement, so Oscar began to get ready. "Can I have a minute or two to get ready?" he asked. "I'll call you back." Matthews considered this, then nodded. Oscar was stalling for time. It had been nearly 6 minutes, and Mac was due in 8. He pulled Angie close to him, and noticed that she was shaking. "Hey," he whispered. "It's ok." She looked up at him. "I'm scared Stoney," she whispered, something that she'd never admitted to him before. He ran his hand through her head, while still attempting to look like he was preparing himself. "We have to do this," he whispered. "Otherwise they'll kill us both." Angie nodded, and pulled away, as if she was trying to escape. It was a sign for him that she was ready. He grabbed her tightly, and held her to the ground. Angie screamed, kicking him. Oscar slapped her, and began to remove her jeans roughly. The rest of the gang was now returning, and they liked what they saw. "Keep it up Robbo," called one of them. Oscar smiled, as he removed his own pants. He pushed himself on top of Angie, hating himself and these men. "You're a natural," called Matthews several minutes later. "But come on, you've had your fun, it's our turn now." Oscar looked at his watch. Mac was due to arrive in exactly 40 seconds. "Come on guys, just a bit more?" Matthews looked at Oscar, and at Angie. It didn't look like she was going anywhere, so he figured it was safe enough to let Robbo keep going for a bit longer. He sure was keen, anyway. "Yeah, alright." Oscar smiled, and pulled himself up. He began kissing Angie, who didn't respond. "Come on, kiss me," he snarled. Angie bit her lip, and kissed Oscar back. He was pushing her back down to the ground, as Mac ran into the clearing, along with Danni, Pete and a group of uniforms. "Police, get down on the ground, don't move, anyone." They called. Pete moved over towards Oscar, and pulled him off Angie roughly. "You're under arrest you bastard." He yelled. He cuffed him roughly, before pushing him over towards a uniform. Meanwhile, Danni had moved over to Angie, who was crying. "It's OK Angie," she said soothingly. "It's all over now." Matthews' head snapped up as he heard this. "You're a copper!" he said. "You're a fucking pig!" He pulled his gun out of his pocket, and pointed it straight at Angie. "Undercover hore." He said, firing it. His bullet missed Angie, but hit Danni instead. It passed straight through her head, and lodged itself in Angie's chest. Mac screamed, running towards them. He fired again, but this time he missed both of them. A police officer nearby shot Matthews, killing him with 3 bullets. Everyone was in shock, except Pete. He moved over to Danni, who had fallen onto Angie. Danni had been killed with the first bullet. He lifted her gently off, to reveal Angie underneath. She was hysterical, and bleeding severely. Pete ripped off his shirt, and pressed it to her chest, to try and stop the bleeding. Oscar had grabbed his phone, and was dialling an ambulance. "I need an ambulance, urgent, there's a police officer with a gunshot wound to the chest. Situation critical." He gave to address of the park, before hanging up. He ran over to where Mac was, and attempted to hug her tightly. "It's ok," he said. Mac rested her head on his shoulder, before straightening up. "Thanks," she whispered. She made a move to get up, but Oscar wouldn't let her. "Leave it to the uniforms," he said. The ambulance arrived, with its siren wailing and the lights flashing. Oscar directed the officers over to where Pete was with Angie. She had calmed down a lot, but was in danger of losing consciousness. Pete stood up, and let them place Angie gently in the ambulance. "I'll go with her," said Oscar. Pete nodded, not protesting. He removed Oscar's handcuffs, which he noticed were still hanging on his wrists. He then watched as the uniforms covered Danni's body with a sheet, and then walked over to where Mac was. He hugged her tightly, not letting go. *** Later that night at the hospital, Mac and Pete met up with Oscar, who was waiting to hear how things had gone. "How is she?" asked Mac, letting go of Pete's hand to rush up to Oscar. He shook his head. "I don't know, she's still in surgery." Mac bit her lip, as Pete caught up to them. "What happened today?" he asked, figuring it was best to avoid to subject of the shooting. Oscar put his face in his hands, before looking up. "I've never seen her so scared." He said finally. "We all came out of the bushes, like planned, but I'll never forget that look." Pete looked down, while Mac wiped her eyes. They walked over to some chairs, and sat, waiting for Oscar to continue. "I grabbed Ang, as planned, and tried to make her relax. Matthews told us to go into the bushes, and we did. That's when he told us that they would all be watching. I nodded, figuring my wire would have already picked up enough. I was getting ready to call you guys in, when he pulled his gun. He threatened to shoot us both if we didn't do it." He stopped, and rubbed his face, before continuing. "I asked for a minute to prepare, and they let us. Ang I and talked about it, and we decided to go ahead. She was so scared though." He paused, not wanting to continue. "Then what?" prompted Pete. "I, I raped her." Said Oscar, breaking down. "I went along with it. I stripped her, and raped her." Mac shook her head, looking furious. "You did not rape her." She said strongly. "I did. And I'll never forgive myself. I felt sick, the whole time." Oscar stood up, and walked over to the doctor who was waiting for them. "You here for Angie Piper?" he asked. Oscar nodded, and motioned for Pete and Mac to join them. The doctor looked down at his notes, and read through them. "She came out of surgery well, and it looks like she'll be fine. The bullet hit a rib, which broke, but it missed her vital organs. She'll probably be in a bit of shock, but other than that, she'll be fine." The doctor looked up, and asked if he could speak to Mac privately. "Sure," she said, looking confused. They went into a corner, and the doctor glanced at his notes again. "There was also evidence of a sexual assault." Mac nodded. "I know." The doctor smiled slightly. "Good. She'll need a lot of support to get through this." He began to walk away, until Mac stopped him. "Can we see her?" she asked. The doctor looked at her, obviously unsure of the answer. Mac pulled out her police badge. "Please?" she asked again. "I'm head of Constable Piper's unit, and it's just…" she trailed off, not sure of what to say next. The doctor nodded. "If you're all quiet, I guess you can see her now. Follow me." The three of them followed the doctor into Angie's room, she was asleep, but he said that she should wake up soon. They all sat in the plastic chairs surrounding her bed, thinking about what had happened, and about Danni. She had died instantly, luckily feeling no pain. *** It was nearly 4am when Angie finally began to wake up. Only Oscar was awake, and as soon as he realised what was happening he moved over to her bed. "Hey," he whispered. "How're you feeling?" Angie slowly opened her eyes, and began to cry. "Danni," she said. Oscar took her hand, soothing her. "I know. I'm so sorry." They sat in silence, before Oscar finally got up the guts to talk about what had happened earlier. "Ang," he whispered. "I'm sorry." "Why?" she mumbled. "For before. In the bushes. I know you didn't want to. I just didn't know…" "It's ok. We had to." She paused, contemplating whether to continue. "I'm just glad it was with you." She whispered. *** Two weeks later, it was the day of Danni's funeral. Because of security reasons, the unit weren't able to talk about all their memories of Danni in a eulogy, instead, they had to sit up the back, and mourn privately. Nearly halfway through the service, a thought struck Pete. "You know," he whispered to Mac, "We're the only one here who know her as Daniella Mayo. To everyone else, she doesn't exist." Mac nodded sadly. "I know." They went back to watching the service, and they all cried during a speech from Danni's younger brother. Afterwards, when they walked up to the site where she had been buried, they placed a photo of the team on it. Angie burst into tears, and buried her face in Oscar's jacket. The two of them had become very close during her hospital stay, and he was helping her through rehab everyday. Mac grabbed Pete's hand, clutching it tightly. They walked together back down the hill, away from the grave of their friend. *** A month later, the unit gathered at Mac's house. Pete arrived first, carrying a bottle of red wine and a six-pack of beer. He had guessed what they were here to discuss, and he figured they would need a fair bit of alcohol. Next came Angie and Oscar. They too carried beer and wine, although neither of them were sure why they were there. Since Angie had left hospital, she was staying at Oscar's house, they said it was because she still had trouble moving about, and this was true, however, Mac and Pete suspected there were other reasons as well. When everyone was seated, Mac decided to tell them why they were there. She figured it was best just to be honest, and tell everyone straight out. "Guys," she said, not sure of what to say next. Everything she had rehearsed flew straight out of her head. "Yeah?" asked Oscar. "What's up Mac?" asked Angie. "It's about the unit." She said. "They want to close us down." "What?" exclaimed Angie. "They can't!" "They can and they will." Said Mac. "Why?" asked Pete, who had been silent up until now. He had figured this was coming. "Look at us." She said. "The last operation screwed up big time. We currently have 3 members, including myself…" "Four." Said Oscar. "No, three." repeated Mac. "No offence Ang, but you're not up to scratch, and you won't be for a while. You've had a lot to deal with." Angie nodded. She knew that. "They believe that we have all had a traumatic experience, which is true, and they don't think we'll be able to come back from it. Also, it's believed that as soon as the trial is over for the last case, there'll be a contract out on all of us. Probably for about $60000 each. Oscar and Angie'll be more. So it's for safety as well." They were all silent, thinking about what Mac had said. "So what's going to happen to us?" asked Oscar quietly. "Well, you'll be offered a transfer to another station, or you can resign. It's your choice." Mac got out pieces of paper, and handed them out. Pete looked at his first. "Where the hell is this place?" he asked. Mac glanced at his paper. "Ararat. Past Ballarat. It's a nice place." Pete rolled his eyes. "No thanks Mac. I think I'll resign." Mac shrugged. She thought that Pete would. "Ang?" asked Mac. Angie looked down at her sheet. "Lorne. It'd be nice, I guess, but…" "But what?" asked Mac. "I don't want to stay in the force. We decided…" "We?" "Me and Stoney; that we didn't want to stay." Mac and Pete tried not to show their shock. "So you're out too Stone?" "Yeah," he replied, not bothering to look at his sheet. "Right." Said Mac, not very surprised that none of her unit wanted to stay in the force. "What about you Mac?" asked Angie. "Oh…" Mac blushed. "I'll be moving to head of homicide, and I'll go from there." The others were impressed. "So, what'll you all do?" she asked, trying to change the subject. Pete grinned. "I'm going to open a garage." "You're a mechanic?" asked Angie. Pete shrugged. "Why not?" "How about you two?" asked Mac. "I mean, I'm assuming that you'll go together." Angie nodded, moving closer to Oscar. "There's a property about 10 kms out of Echuca, right on the river, that we're thinking of buying. It's about 200 acres, and it's great for cattle or wheat." "And…" prompted Oscar, looking excited. "And…" said Angie. "I'm pregnant." Pete nearly dropped his bottle of beer in shock, and Mac nearly fell of the couch. "Are you serious?" she said. Oscar grinned. "Yeah!" "Was it that day in the bushes?" asked Mac. Angie blushed. "Yeah." "Mum and Dad, eh? You shockers!" Oscar smiled, and lent back in to the couch with his beer. Maybe life wouldn't be too bad. If only he knew.
