Enjoy Mac hastily walked through the halls of headquarters. She was there to talk to Brian about one of their cases. Ever since dinner ‘that’ night. Brian had stopped the come-on lines and Mac was just starting to respect him. Mac calmly waited outside the interview room, just as she started to yawn, the door opened and Brian appeared. "Mac" he says, "Would you mind doing me a favour?" "What is it" Mac asked suspiciously. "I just finished interviewing a woman who has been mugged. The wife of the Lord Mayor. She has bruises. I was just going to get one of the female officers to talk to her about them but, considering I could defiantly trust you to be discreet about it I would much rather that you did it, if you don’t mind of course." "Yes of course. I’m going to hazard a guess and say you think Mayor Simmonds is abusing his wife." "It’s just one of those gut feelings Mac." "Okay no problem. What's her name?" "Brenda." Mac walked into the interview room. "Hello I’m Detective Senior Sergeant Ellen Mackenzie." "Brenda Simmonds." "I understand you were mugged?" "Yes, I already told Detective Gray all the details." "Those bruises on your arm, did the mugger assault you." "No, he didn’t touch me, just grabbed my bag and ran." "All right then, may I ask how you sustained the bruises." Brenda began to look uncomfortable and stuttered her response "I...Well...It’s just..." She put her head in her hands and began to sob. "Please tell me. It’s very important." Mac gently prodded her. Mrs. Simmonds looked up red faced and said, "Please don’t tell anyone, it’s very important that no one else knows this." "I can’t promise, but I will do my best." Mrs. Simmonds didn’t seem to like this answer a great deal but choose to continue anyway. "My husband, he hits me. He has a very stressful job and when things go wrong he takes it out on me. He’s never touched our children, but it’s getting worse and I’m afraid he might." "I promise you that I will do everything in my power to help you." Mrs. Simmonds had somewhat calmed down "Thank you so much, I just couldn’t keep it bottled up inside anymore." "That’s my job, Mrs. Simmonds to protect people." Mac gave Brenda her mobile number and instructed her to call if there were anymore problems. Brenda thanked her and went home. Mac went back to the factory still rather shaken by what she had heard The next day, Mac was sitting in her office going through paperwork when her mobile phone rang. It was Brian "Mac, I’ve got Brenda Simmonds down here, she’s very upset and is asking to talk to you." "I’ll be there in 10 minutes Brian, try and calm her down." "No problem see you in ten." Mac hung up and drove to headquarters. Brian met her at the front desk and took her to the interview room where they had Mrs. Simmonds. "Brenda" Mac said to the hysterical woman in front of her " What's happened." Mac noticed that she had fresh bruises on her arms. "He hit me again, I’ve had it with protecting him" Brenda ranted. "I didn’t tell you everything yesterday, but I’m sick of protecting him so I’m going to tell you now." "Okay what is it you haven't told us?" "He has been embezzling money for about six months" Mac looked shocked. "Are you sure?" "Oh yes, I’m sure He just loves to brag about how smart he is and how easily he gets away with it." "Alright" Mac said not sure what to do with this new information. "This will solve both of our current problems, well get evidence of his embezzlement and we will put him in jail and he will never hurt you again. It was very brave of you to come forward and this will be very helpful. Thank you." "No thank you, I really appreciate everything your doing for me." "It’s my job." Mac told her again. When Mac returned to the factory, she gathered Pete and a newly recovered Oscar into her office. "What I’m about to tell you is very sensitive, so please don’t discuss it with anyone not even Angie or Danni, only the people involved are going to know okay?" "Sure no problem." Pete said "Mum’s the word." Oscar replied " Okay the lord mayor, George Simmonds has been embezzling money for about 6 months, I’m going to go undercover as his temporary secretary, his secretary is on leave so I will have access to his books and other such things." "All right Mac but where do we come into this?" Pete asked. "I need the two of you to bug his office and then do surveillance, the other thing is that he has been abusing his wife, we want to get this out of the way quickly, so we can get his wife and kids out of there. Again this is very sensitive so not a word "Okay, when do we start." Oscar asked "Tomorrow, be here bright and early because I start work at nine." "Good Morning Mr. Simmonds, I’m your secretaries replacement Tania Schofield" Mac said. She was dressed in a black skirt suit with a red sleeveless top underneath. Good morning Tania, It’s nice to meet you. I’d like a cup of coffee please, black with one. With that George Simmonds walked into his office. At twelve o’clock, Mr. Simmonds stepped out of his office and approached Mac at her desk. "I’m going to lunch Tania, please take messages from anyone who calls." Mac waited until he was in the elevator, she then picked up her phone and called Pete and Oscar in the van. Pete picked up the phone "Hello" ‘Pete, he’s in the elevator going to lunch, get up here and if anyone asks you your here to fix the air conditioning." "No problem Mac, see you in a minute." Mac sat back down at her desk and didn’t look up until she heard the elevator doors open. Pete and Oscar stepped out of the elevator. Pete with a tool box in hand. They walked towards Mac. "Where here to fix the air conditioner, please show us which office it is?" Pete asked politely Mac got up "Of course right through here" She said and led them towards the Lord Mayor’s office. When they got inside the office Mac leaned over and whispered in Pete’s ear "The phone has already been tapped" Pete nodded and then Oscar and himself went to work. Mac spent a week undercover as Simmonds secretary and they got nothing. Then on a Tuesday a week after they started the surveillance, Mac made a huge mistake. Simmonds was talking to the deputy mayor, just within earshot of Mac about a problem they were having with leaks to the press. He was using the example of a police officer that had, had a relationship with a prostitute. Mac looked up in surprise and said "You mean that information about Bill hollister has been leaked to the press." "You know about this?" Simmonds asked "Yes, I was involved in the investigation" The minute the words came out of Mac’s mouth she knew she had just made the biggest mistake of her career. "Hang on a minute, involved in the investigation? You’re a cop?" ‘Well...ah.. You see." Mac stuttered, She knew very well that she couldn’t talk her way out of this. Simmonds got very angry and stormed out of his office yelling about being crossed and betrayed by his own. Mac’s mobile started to ring. "Hello" "What just happened?" Pete asked "I’ve just blown my cover. GOD DAMMIT! " Mac yelled "I’m coming up to get you okay" "Yeah thanks, I’ll meet you at the elevator" Mac knew that there was nothing she could do about this situation, she just hopped he wouldn’t figure out it was Brenda who talked and if he did that Brenda would leave. She walked towards the elevator to meet Pete and go back to the factory. She wanted nothing more than a cold beer and a dark corner to hide in. Pete, Oscar and Mac went back to the factory and Pete offered to take Mac to the pub. "Hey Oscar you coming for a beer?" Pete asked. "Not today, got an appointment with the physio" Oscar replied. "Good luck" Mac said "Thanks I’ll see you guys later." "Bye" Both Mac and Pete replied. We’re drinking beer at 1:30 in the afternoon, in the middle of the week.. This is not good Church." Mac told Peter with a dejected sigh. "You need a beer Mac, You’ve definitely earn’t it." "Yeah" Mac said as her phone began to ring "one second" She said to Pete. "Hello" "Is this detective Mackenzie?" A female voice said. "Yes whose calling?" "This is Brenda Simmonds, You told me I could call you anytime I needed help." "Yes of course what's wrong Mac asked concerned. "It’s my husband, He came home early today, he was very angry. He hit me and started raving about me being the only one who knew. My 8-year-old son tried to stop him and he hit him, he just kept hitting him until he was unconscious. He’s in intensive care in a coma and they don’t think he’s going to survive" By the time Brenda finished telling Mac she was sobbing uncontrollably. "Oh God, I’ll be right there." "Thank you" Came the muffled reply and she hung up. Pete was staring at Mac worriedly "What’s going on?" he asked "Simmonds went home and beat the shit out of his wife and Son and now the sons in a coma." "Oh my god." Pete said looking horrified. "I have to get to the hospital." Mac looked around hopelessly. "I’ll drive you" Pete offered. "Thank you." Mac replied and headed out the door. They drove in silence to the hospital, Pete parked the car and they walked towards intensive care together. At the nurse’s station Pete stopped and told Mac he’d catch up with her in a minute. Mac just nodded and kept going. "Hi Jeanette." Pete said to one of the nurses "Is Colette around?" "Hi Peter, Yes she should be here in a minute, I’ll see if I can find her for you." " Thanks a lot." About 3 minutes later Colette walked up to the desk. She leaned over and kissed Pete lightly. "Hello" She said "Hi yourself." "What are you doing in my neck of the woods." " Just wondering if you wanted to go to dinner tonight." "Pete you know how hard it is to get a babysitter at the last minute." "I know it’s fine just bring her with you." "Okay what time?" "About 7 o’clock I’ll pick you up okay?" "I finish work at six thirty and I have to pick up Jessie from daycare so how about I meet you at your place at 7?" "No problem, look I should get going." "Okay see you tonight." They kissed again and Pete walked towards intensive care. He found Mac sanding in the hallway, staring into space. "Are you all right?" Pete asked her "Are you all right?" Pete asked her "I just wish I hadn't stuffed the investigation up and then none of this would have happened, I was just so surprised when he mentioned Hollister that I didn't think about what I was saying." Pete put his arm around her "You did everything you could Mac it's not your fault, It's Simmonds that did this not you, don't blame yourself." A nurse walked out of the room and said to Mac "Mrs. Simmonds would like to see you now." "Thank you." Mac replied. "Mac I'm going to go back to the factory, call me if you need anything." "I will thanks Pete." Mac walked into the hospital room. The first thing she saw was the little boy in the bed, almost his whole head was covered in bandages and the bits of skin you could see were very badly bruised. The sound of the life support machine filled her head. Mac's eyes focused on Brenda, She had a cut on her forehead and a black eye was developing. "Brenda.' Mac said when the woman didn't seem to notice she was there. "Oh Hello, thank you so much for coming." "It's no problem really, have you been looked at?" Mac asked indicating the cut and her darkening eye "Yes, it'll be fine." A police officer walked into the room and apoligised for interrupting. "Mrs. Simmonds, we need you to come to the station and make a statement while it is all still fresh in your mind." "Of course." Brenda said Mac indicated Brenda's son. "I'll keep an eye on him." "Thank you, I'll be back as soon as I can." Mac nodded and marveled at how well Brenda was holding together, must be the shock she thought, as she settled into the chair beside the bed and fell asleep. Mac was woken by shouting voices and a high pitched squeal. She looked up and saw nurses rushing around the bed. Mac jumped up "What's going on" She asked anyone who would listen. "He's arrested." Someone replied "Will someone get her out of here. "Another nurse shouted. "Ma'am could you please wait outside?" They led Mac outside. "Is this your son?" "No, his mother had to go to the police station, I was just sitting with him until she came back." "Could you please wait in the waiting room." "Of course." About 10 minutes later, A doctor came out into the waiting room. He approached Mac. "Are you looking after Joseph Simmonds." "Yes, I was waiting for his mother to come back from making a statement." "I have some bad news." "Yes" Mac, said as she developed a sinking feeling in the pit of her Stomach. "Joseph died, he had massive head trauma, his little body just couldn't take it." "Oh god." Mac covered her face with her hands. This is all my fault she thought. With that she began to cry. "Is there anything I can get you?" the doctor asked kindly "Just a taxi, if you wouldn't mind" Mac managed to choke out. "Of course." "Were still trying to get Mrs. Simmonds at police headquarters, We’ll take care of it." "Thank you." Mac sat in one of the hospital chairs for about 15 minutes. Then a nurse came and told her that her taxi was here. Mac went outside and got into the taxi. She gave the driver Peter’s address and they drove off. It was five thirty. Pete's house was about twenty minutes away. Mac hoped that he would be home. They finally pulled up in front of Pete's house. His car was in the drive so he was home. Mac paid the Taxi driver and walked up to the front door. After knocking twice Pete opened the door. Took one look at Mac's tear stained face and took her into his arms. He held her for what seemed like years but was only about 15 minutes as she sobbed into his chest. Pete gently pushed her away. He brushed her hair back from her face and asked "What happened." "Joseph Simmonds died." "Oh Mac, I'm so sorry." "It's all my fault Pete, I should have done something, gotten the some protection, anything." "Mac don't beat yourself up, you did everything you could, there's only one person to blame for this and that’s Simmonds, He's going to jail for a very longtime for what he did." "I know but I still think I could have stopped it." "I don't want to hear anymore Mac, you need to get some sleep, your exhausted and everything seems worse when you’re exhausted." "Yeah." "You can sleep in my bed, come on." Pete said leading her down the hallway. "Pete I don't want to be alone." Mac said with a pleading look. "It's okay Mac I'll stay with you." Pete opened the door to his bedroom and walked in. Mac followed behind him. Pete was wearing a T-shirt and shorts with no shoes. Mac on the other hand had a pants suit on with high heels. Mac took off her shoes and jacket and crawled into Pete’s bed. Pete followed and pulled her into his arms. Mac always felt safe, warm and protected in Pete's arms. She quickly calmed down and fell asleep. Pete also dozed off he had forgotten all about the date he's organised with Colette. A little less than an hour later Colette turned up with Jessie and knocked, she waited, knocked again. Then she got out her spare set of keys. He must be in the shower or something she thought. Colette told Jessie to wait in the car for her and went inside. She crept down to his bedroom, planning on surprising him, but when she opened the door she got the surprise of her life. "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?" She yelled at the site of Mac in Pete's arms.. Pete woke up, then sat up which caused Mac to fall back on the bed. Mac opened her eyes a little dazed "What’s wrong..." Colette began screaming at Pete "You men you’re all the same, they convince you there different but you’re all the same. The first second you get you’re in bed with someone else." Colette had yet to notice that both Pete and Mac were wearing clothes. "Colette you don't under..." Colette cut Pete off. "No, I don't want to hear it, it's all going to be lie's anyway. Don't you ever come near me again Peter don't you dare. "With that Colette turned on her heel and walked out of the room and then the house. Pete finally got some brain function back and chased after her. By the time he got to the front door Colette was driving away. "DAMMIT. "Pete yelled slamming the door. Mac appeared in the doorway, still dazed and rather bleary eyed. "Well there you go Mac, you got what you wanted. Colette's out of the picture. If I didn't know better I'd think you had planned this." "What the hell are you talking about Pete, if you have a problem with your girlfriend sort it out. I don't need this now, I came here hoping to get some comfort from a friend, but I guess that was expecting too much." Mac felt the threat of tears and tried to blink them away but it didn't help and they began to run down her cheeks. "I'm leaving" She told him and began to walk away. Pete grabbed her arm and held her back. "Mac I’m sorry. I wasn't thinking, I was just angry and you were the closest target." This just made Mac cry harder. Pete pulled her into his arms and led her back towards his bedroom. Pete opened the door and they both sat on the bed. "Mac, I don't know what the hells going on. I can't figure out if I want Colette or if I want you." Mac looked up surprised at this admission. "I'm still attracted to you Mac and we're already good friends, our relationship was okay until the whole Bernie fiasco. We were and still could be great together." "I know Pete, I've been starting to realise that lately. I've also been realising how much I still care about you and how much I want to be with you." "Mac, I have to find out if it's you or Colette I want, but will you just give me a day or two to sort out my feelings?" "Of course, but how does anyone decide between two people?" Pete answered her by taking her face in his hands and kissing her long and hard. Pete begins undressing Mac and they break the kiss with Pete undoing the buttons on her shirt. Mac looks Pete in the eye and asks him "Are you sure you want to do this?" "Yes" Pete kisses Mac again and finishes undoing the buttons on her shirt. Later that night Pete and Mac are lying in bed talking. "I was only planning on kissing you." Pete tells Mac. "Well that was a pretty interesting kiss. "Pete just laughed and Mac laid her head on his chest and they both fell asleep in each other’s arms. In the morning Mac woke at six thirty. She gently pried herself out of Pete's arms trying not to wake him. It didn't work and Pete stirred. "Hmmm, what are you doing?" Pete asked groggily. "I'm getting ready for work." "Oh yeah, It's only Wednesday isn't it." Mac started to get dressed while Pete talked to her. Mac finishes getting dressed and sits on the side of the bed and asks Pete what's he's planning to do. "I just need some time to think." He tells her "Take today off Pete, but don't take too long. I won't hang around forever." She kissed him and walked out of his bedroom. Pete spent the day in his house thinking. By midday he has decided that he wants to try again with Mac. Pete decides to go and talk to Colette and try and explain what happened to her. He goes to the hospital and walks to the nurse’s station. "Hi could I please speak to Colette?" Pete asked the nurse. She looked at him for a moment and then said, "You must the Peter we're always hearing about." "Yes that'd be me." "I'm sorry but she handed in her resignation today. I'm not sure were she is now." "Oh" Pete said a little shocked "Thanks anyway. "He said and walked away. His last hope was her house, he went there and no one answered. He left a small envelope under the mat; the letter inside explained everything that had happened, the fact that he wanted to try again with Mac. He wrote that he was sorry for causing her any pain and that he would leave her alone if that was the way she wanted it. With that done Pete went home, He wasn't sure if Colette would read it but he'd done as much as he could. Pete left a message on Mac's answering service that asked her to come around to his place do they could talk. Mac knocked on Pete's door at seven O'clock looking perfect but a little depressed. Pete opened the door and let Mac in. "Hello." she said with a question in her voice, she had been distracted all day and everyone had noticed. "How are you" Pete asked "Bloody tired actually. "Mac answered "How was work?" Pete asked "Pete lets stop playing games, you told me you needed to talk, well let’s talk." "Actually I was hoping we could go out for dinner." "The two of us, go to a restaurant, in public?" "Yeah Mac, your the boss now remember." "Your right but I'm really tired, is there any chance we could order Chinese and stay in." "Yeah sure what ever you want." Later that night Mac lay in Pete's arms, they had talked for hours and had eventually ended up in bed again. Mac sighed she was once again in Pete's arms except this time she was blissfully happy. I love this man with all my heart she thought. Then drifted off into peaceful sleep.
