TITLE: Bridges Rebuilt AUTHOR: Courtney (courtz16@hotmail.com) SUMMARY: I've set this fic the day after the season three finale. The fic basically follows Angie as she attempts to rebuild her friendship with Mac (and gets a big surprise) as well as with Oscar. I wrote this because I was extremely disappointed that nothing was said between Angie and Oscar during the finale, so I sorta made up my own scene. This isn't really long, and has no real action, but concentrates on characters relationships. So I hope you enjoy DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the following charcters, they are they property of the people who created the show Stingers. I am not writing this for any monetary gain. Oh yeah i nearly forgot, I used the S word once or twice, in a very non offensive way. And before I forget, there is a few references to episodes not only during this season, but the last two seasons as well. If you would like a quaick background on these eps. just email me. BRIDGES REBUILT “Mac, I am not sorry for what I said, I feel I was....” Angie shook her head, as she looked into her bathroom mirror and applied her lipstick, muttering to herself “Way, way to aggressive” She put the cap back on to her lipstick and blooted her lips with toilet paper befire taking out her powder and dusting it acrross her now made up face “Mac, I don’t know what has been going on in your life lately, and I miss the friendship we used to have. I apologise for the way I behaved on the Triad case, and I would like to put that behind us, and start the New Year afresh” Angie smiled, that was it, that was what she was going to say to Mac. With one quick glance back into the mirror, Angie grabbed her purse and keys and made her way to Mac’s house. As Angie pulled her Volvo into Mac’s street, she began to wonder if she should have called first. Oh well, too late now. As Mac’s house came into sight, Angie noticed a vaguely familiar car in the driveway, with government red numberplates. Angie glanced down at her watch. It was quarter to nine in the morning. A shiver went down Angie’s spine, as she begged to no one in particular “Please don’t be Brian from Armed Robberies, please, please, please” Then Angie scolded herself. Just because there was a strange car in Mac’s driveway at this time in the morning didn’t have to mean Mac got lucky last night. Mac was a very dedicated woman, and therefore it could just be a informal work meeting. Angie wouldn’t put it past Mac to arrange a meeting for quarter to nine on a Saturday morning. Only half believing the story she had made up for herself, Angie boldly went to the front door and rang the doorbell before she had time to chiken out.. Angie waited at the doorstep for at least a minute before Mac at last came to the door, in a bathrobe, with her hair wrapped in a towel. “Angie, what are you doing here?” Mac looked more than a little surprised to see Angie, and a more than a little apprahensive. Angie was taken aback by her abrupt welcome, she expected at least a hello. Angie began to mumble, her planned speech went straight out the window “I just came to see if you were alright, and to apolgise for the whole Triad thing, but maybe I’m interrupting something...” Angie was interrupted by a voice from inside. A voice that was immediately recogniseable to Angie “Ellen, where do you keep your toaster?” Mac immediately looked down at her feet, not wanting to look Angie in the eye, and said quickly “Look Ange, I got to go, aahhh... I appreciate the apology and I’m sorry to and I’ll talk to you later, promise” And with that Mac shut the door, with Angie standing shell shocked on the doorstep. She could no longer hold it in, and quietly at first Angie began to giggle. Mac and Hollister? Angie quickly went back to her car, parked on the curb and hopped in, before her laughter grew loud enough to be heard inside. Finally beginning to calm down, Angie pulled her car away from the curb, and went on her way to her second bridge building errand of the day. Angie knew she should have gone to visit Oscar earlier, but she couldn’t get the courage up to do it. While Oscar was unconsciouss, she was by his side when all the others had left to go home, including Mac. For some reason she didn’t want the others to know. It was Angie who called his parents to tell them what had happened, and invited his parents Charlie and Shirley and his brother Brad to say at her house for as long as they liked, and yet, she didn’t have the courage to visit him one on one when he had regained consciousness. Angie made her way up to the ward where Oscar was, taking a brief detour to check if Collette was working, before remembering Pete had organised a special weekend for them, and arranged for Collette to have time off work.. Angie smiled to herself, Pete was really serious about Collette. But then it occured to her. Pete’s relationship with Collette, along with the pressures of Oscar being shot, and the both of them being investigated by I.A. must had finally pushed Mac off the edge, and into bed with... Bill Hollister, the same guy who thought he was off around the world with a hooker. At last Angie came to Oscar’s private room. He looked as he was dozing, so Angie quietly went in and took a chair near his bedhead. Angie sat in the dark room for awhile, watching Oscar as he slept, somewhat restlessly, close to waking. As he turned on to his side, Angie heard Oscar murmur in his sleep “Michelle... laugh a minute, Michelle..” Angie looked at Stone in surprise. He was now sleeping peacefully. He had to be dreaming, dreaming, of the time they had gone together to his parents house. Angie sat back on the chair and smiled to herself, as her thoughts began to wander. “Angie, what are you so happy about?” Angie’s daydreams were interupted by Oscar’s croaky morning voice. Angie smiled. Doesn’t anyone say ‘Hello’ or ‘Good morning’ anymore. She answered Oscar “Not much. How are you anyway? Recovered from the little outing Danni and Pete took you on?” Oscar laughed, and took the little lung exerciser off the side of his bed “Here, look at this would ya?” Angie watched as Oscar blew into the device, lifting the first ball to the top, while the other ball hovered at the bottom. “Did you see that Ange, I nearly lifted the second ball” Angie smiled, knowing that it took no effort for her to lift both of the balls to the top. Oscar’s mood quickly changed, as he placed the device back on to the bed side table “Angie, could you please get me a drink” Angie jumped up out of her chair. Why was this meeting so awkward, she knew she should have visited Oscar one on one sooner, or not at all. Angie put the cup on to her lap, and poured in some water, clumsily spilling it all over her lap. Swearing to herself, she went to get up, forgetting about the half filled cup in her lap, spilling all of its contents to the floor. Oscar watched on helpessly as Angie knelt down to clean up the mess she had made with a paper towel. Finally she had cleared it all up, and still on her knees she reached up and put the dirty paper towels on the bedside table, and went to get up, hitting her head on the side of Oscar’s bed. Frustrated with her clumsiness, Angie’s eyes began to water, and soon tears were running down her cheeks. Oscar, stranded in his bed, extended his hand to her, and with his free hand handed her a tissue. “Ange, its alright, the cleaners told me they were getting bored anyway, trust me, they will appriciate a mess on the floor” Angie laughed. It was always Oscar who could make her laugh. Though this thought brang on a loud sob. It had been Oscar who could always bring a smile out of her. Past tense. Angie knew it was now or never that they were going to have this discussion, and it may as well be her who starts it. Angie took a moment to wipe her eyes, and blow her nose, handing the tissue back to Oscar, who carrying it by the corner put it in the small bin on the other side of his bed. With her hand still in Oscar’s Angie began to speak, unsteadily at first “What happened Oscar? We used to be, well so close. I don’t mean about the kiss, or even the night at your parents place. But we used to be best mates, we were the two new kids on the block together, we learnt the trade together. We depended on each other... we made it in this job together” Angie paused, and Oscar said “But you didn’t visit me Angie, I wanted you here beside me. Mum told me how they stayed at your place, and you always wanted to know how I was going, and what I was doing, but you never visited, without Danni. And lets face it, no one can get a word in edgeways with Danni can they?” Angie laughed. There he goes again, making me laugh, with his little country sayings, “I did visit you Oscar, but then you woke up. And I was scared. Scared you wouldn’t want to see me. Or that it would be awkward, and I’d spill the water, and hit my head on your bed..” Oscar laughed, but Angie continued “There was not a waking moment when I didn’t want to see you. Your Mum tried to get me to come in, but I couldn’t. I know I’m chicken shit...” Oscar interrupted “You’re not chicken shit Ange, you’re one gutsy woman” Angie smiled, but they both knew the truth “Maybe I’m gutsy on the job, but thats not me. Thats someone else, someone else entirely. Danni was right you know, I should be more forward, especially with guys, but I can’t, and its exactly the same when I’m with you Oscar” Oscar smiled, and took his hand out of hers and reached into a drawer on the other side of his bed, looking for something in particular. At last he found it and held it in his hand, turning to Angie “I wouldn’t change you for the world Angie Piper, you know that don’t you. And I’m sorry to. I know I have been advoiding you, both at work and socially. Is my apology accepted?” Angie smiled and said “Only if mine was” Oscar laid back on to his pillows, and thought for a moment. Oscar, after a few moment said half jokingly, half serious “Only on one condition.” Angie, not sure if he was serious or not said “Anything, I think?” Oscar laughed “Promise me nothing like this ever happens again, between us. We make sure if anything is bugging us that we will discuss it. I don’t ever want this to happen again Ange” Angie smiled “I promise” Oscar looked happy, then put on a pathetic looking face “Pinky swear?” Angie laughed, and linked her pinky finget with Oscars “Pinky swear” At last Oscar took his free hand, still clutching whatever was in it, and placed it in Angies hand. Puzzled, Angie looked down at her hand. It was her bracelet. Her friendship bracelet. She closed her hand tight, happy to have it back. Oscar then took it out of her hands, and placed it on her small wrist. Angie looked at Oscar questioningly, knowing exactly what she was about to ask, he replied beofre she got the chance to say a word, “What? I found it, in the waste paper basket. And you know what the cleaners are like..” Both Angie and Oscar said together, a phrase that had been said to them many times by various cleaners “Only paper in the waste paper baset, you can’t recycle this crap!” Both Oscar and Angie had smiles spread across their faces, like Cheshire cats. At last things were as they were before. After a brief, but comforable silence, Oscar decided it was time to rebuild the bridges he had destoyed “Hey Ange, do you remember last time I was in here? After the bashing?” Angie wondered what brought this one, but answered “Of course I do” “Well do you remember the conversation that we had, the one when you brought me in some chocolates, just after Dad left” Angie remembered the conversation well “The one were I said that we wouldn’t work, and you agreed?” Oscar smiled, “Yeah, thats the one, well I was wondering, well is there anyway that I could change you mind?” Angie smiled “You changed my mind a long time a go Oscar. If I remember correctly my mind wasn’t the one that needed changing, not after what you told me after that backpacker case, not after what I was lucky enough to hear on the wire” Oscar looked apologetically at Angie “Ange, I didn’t mean what I said on the wire, I was just caught up in the moment. But I did mean what I said to you. That if we were together that I would like the whole deal, or as you put the whole catastrophie. Now I know that at the moment the job comes first, but being shot really forces you to re-evauate things, and Ange, when I was laying there, bleeding out, with Danni and Pete, all I could think was ‘I can’t die now, not until I talk to Angie’ Thats what got me through this Ange. I couldn’t bare the thought of dying, without at least knowing our friendship if nothing else was ok.” Angie squeezed Oscars hand, and placed her free hand over the top of it. A shiver went down he spine, and didn’t go unnoticed by Oscar “They like to keep this place at a couple degrees below zero, don’t ask me why” Angie laughed, and Oscar continued “You can come in here if you like?” Oscar pulled back some of the blankets, then paused then added, in a feminine voice as Angie looked as if she was about to take up the offer “But hang on, I hope you don’t mind if I’m naked, can’t sleep in P.J’s, they make me restless” Angie laughed, as she climbed in beside Oscar, with no awkwardness at all. She then suddenly remembered that morning “You’ll never guess what I saw this morning?” Oscar looked interested “Ohhh this sounds like goss. Work related goss. What did you see Ange?” Angie smiled, there was no point in making him guess, he never would “Bill Hollister having breakfast at Mac’s place” Oscar looked stunned, then began to laugh, before questioning Angie “It wasn’t like a meeting was it Ange, or just a... I don’t know quick visit” Angie smiled, she knew what she saw “No, Mac was in a robe, and Hollister was in a jazzy little pair of Collingwood boxer shorts, wanting to know where the toaster was kept” Oscar laughed, trying not to do any damage to his wounds. Angie smiled, as she tried to get some of the blankets off Oscar “Its great to have our friendship back Stoney” Oscar, snatching his blanket back replied “Yeah, it is pretty good isn’t it” As the sun set outside of Oscar’s window, Angie still remained in his room, where she had stayed for the entire day. The doctor had come in and said Oscar would be able to go home soon, on the condition that he wasn’t going home to an empty house, and Angie made sure that he wouldn’t be, and was planning on arranging to have time off work to nurse him, and cook him big roast dinners. Although they had agreed to leave the relationship as purely platonic for the time being, there was still no better company that that of each other After the two of them had finished the pizza Angie had managed to smuggle into the hospital, they sat back, and continued their conversation. There was a lot to catch up on. Angie them remembered “My sister is pregnant, she is going to have a little girl next March” Oscar smiled “So you’re going to be an aunt. Auntie Angie, has a good ring to it!” Angie laughed, and then said “I don’t know if I agree with their decision to find out the baby’s sex before its born though?” Oscar thought about it “No, I don’t think I would like to know either, and I don’t think my mother would let me! As she puts it ‘Its one of the biggest surprises of your lifetime” Angie smiled “Yeah, your mother would say that, and I have to agree, although it would makechoosing a name easier wouldn’t it?” Oscar nodded, and Angie continued “Though I always did like Kieran for a boy and Paige for a girl” Oscar screwed up his nose “I really like Kieran, but Paige? Doesn’t go well with Pierce does it? Paige Pierce, that’s just cruel that is” Angie went to protest, but then caught on to what Stone was implying, and smiled at their mutural understanding. FINIS
