Not waiting for a reply he continued on. “I thought I was a seven out of ten eh?” “Six.” “Why don’t you give me another go…I’m a fast learner.” “Pete, we talked about this.” Danni said, looking up. “I know…I know…but you gotta give me credit for trying!” He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and then playfully grabbed her neck, pretending to chock her. “Good luck with the faces, see you tomorrow” he said, winking as he walked off. ‘When you touch me like this, When you hold me like that, I just have to admit that it’s all coming back to me.’ “Got it!” Danni yelled across the room as a piece of paper slid out from the printer. She headed for Mac’s office fixing up the collar of her pink shirt as she did so. She knocked briefly on the door before entering. “Ah…Danni,” Mac said, covering the mouthpiece on the phone.” “Oh is this a bad time?” “No, no…just hold on a sec. Sorry Eve but I’ve got to go. I’ll talk to you later…yep…sounds good…bye. What is it Danni?” “Well you know how I said that I recognised the girl who moved in to the apartment near me?” “The one Jack Posey lived in before he um…yeah, I remember.” “She’s a drug dealer!” “Oh god Danni, your apartment block’s got them all! You fit in just nicely!” “Yeah ha, ha, I’m serious. I just looked her up on the computer and she just got out of prison.” “Exactly, she just got out. She’s served her time so um it might be a good idea if you don’t go jumping to any conclusions…” “Okay hint taken, I just thought, you know, I’d become friendly with her…might come in handy.” “Nothing wrong with being nice to people, she could probably use all the friends she can get right now.” “Exactly!” “Is that all?” “Oh yeah…sorry, are you in a rush to be somewhere?” “Yeah I’m meeting Eve for dinner actually.” “Oh nice! You two must be getting along then!” “Yeah it is nice actually, I just...” Mac started to trail off. “Just what?” Danni said gently. “I feel as though I’ve put a piece of a jigsaw puzzle into place. A piece that always belonged there and should have been their sooner...” Her voice grew softer as a smile came to her lips. She shook her head. “I’ve got to get going, see you tomorrow.” “Yeah, see you; and Mac?” Danni started. “Yes.” Mac turned around. “I’m really happy for you.” “Thanks Danni,” she said, smiling as she walked towards her car. -Danni’s Apartment Block As Danni put the keys into her apartment door, the blonde girl she’d looked up on the computer walked past. Danni smiled at her, pushing the door open and turning around to shut it. The girl stopped and turned back, jamming her foot in the door before Danni could close it. She pushed the door back holding out her hand. “Hi, I’m Louisa!” She said cheerfully. “It’s nice to meet you, I hope we can get to know each other since we live so close.” I know more than you think was what went through Danni’s mind as she opened the door wider and introduced herself to the pretty blonde. “I’m Madelyn, would you like to come in?” Danni said, using the first name that came to her head. “Nar, sorry can’t. I’m on my way to a party, your welcome to join me though,” Louisa replied. “Better not, have to work tomorrow. Have fun though, no doubt I’ll see you later.” “Yep, see ya.” “Nice to have met you Louisa,” Danni called. “Call me Lou!” The girl called back as she walked off, flicking her hair over her shoulders. -Next Morning “Morning,” Mac called as she got out of her car and headed towards her office. “Mac armed rob want you to give them a call as soon as possible,” Angie called. “Okay thanks Ange.” “Morning all!” Oscar said as he smoothly got off his motor cycle. “Beautiful day isn’t it?” “Yeah the sun’s shining and the birds are singing,” Danni said sarcastically. “Alright, alright.” “We should all be out spreading peace and love and happin...” Pete started in a dry tone, “Okay! Point taken, looks like someone got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.” Oscar said, looking directly at Danni. “Excuse us for living,” Danni replied curtly as she picked up the book she was reading and stormed out of the room. Oscar looked at Pete and Angie inquiringly. “Ah… I’ll go,” Peter offered, fear slipping ever so slightly into his voice as he got up and went in the direction of Danni.” He found her in the locker room with her head in her hands. “What was that about Dan?” “Oh, nothing.” She replied quickly, composing herself. “Don’t bullshit me, I know you better than that.” “Actually…Pete there’s something I need to te-” Mac came around the corner. “Guys we’ve got a new case, briefing room now please,” she said, then promptly exited. Danni immediately stood up, running a hand through her hair she said, “Now’s not the time…” She squeezed his shoulder affectionately and headed towards the briefing room; leaving a confused Pete to follow. ‘When I touch you like this, And I hold you like that, It's so hard to believe but, It's all coming back to me.’ -Briefing room “Guys… armed rob have given us a case… As you’ve all probably heard on the news, since we all like to keep up to date with what’s going on.” She said, a hint of humour in her voice; her eyes flickering briefly over to Peter. “Armed rob have gotten their hands on a huge stash of coke. Only no one knows where it came from.” “How huge are we talking here Mac?” Asked Oscar. “I’m not sure exactly, I didn’t ask, but enough for us to be setting up a sting on the prime suspect. Angie you-” “Hang on, and the prime suspect is…?” Angie said. “Louisa Todd, blonde who just served time for-” Mac was cut off by Danni. “She just did time for drug dealing. She lives in the apartment near me.” “Oh shit, that’s right. Have you introduced yourself to her yet Danni?” “Well rather she introduced herself to me, I told her my name was Madelyn. She seems harmless enough though you know.” “Looks can be deceiving,” said Oscar. “Madelyn, okay good, change of plan then. Angie your out, Danni your in. -Mac’s office later on. They have just wworked out their covers. “Come in Danni!” Mac said, after hearing the tap on the door. “What’s the problem?” She said, picking up her cup of coffee and coming around from behind her desk to sit next to Danni on the lounge. “Ah…Mac…I umm don’t know if I should be on this case. Maybe it’s a better idea to put Ange in.” “I can’t see why, your perfect, you live right next -” she was cut off by Danni speaking softly. “Um it’s rather personal actually Mac…I think that -” “No, it’s okay.” Mac said. “If it’s that important I can put Angie in.” “Mac I,” Danni stumbled. “What is it Danni?” Mac asked kindly. “I think I might be pregnant.” As a look of shock registered on Mac’s face she lifted her coffee cup up to her lips in an attempt to hide it. Danni’s eyes flickered over her friend’s face before tears came to her eyes. “I thought you’d react like that,” she said, matter of factly. “So I can guess you can imagine my shock too.” “I ah, didn’t know that you were seeing anyone, but… -” “I’m not.” She stated. “It was sort of a one off thing.” “Oh,” Mac’s eyes hit the floor. “Anyone I know.” “You could say that,” Danni trailed off as more tears stung at her eyes. “I don’t know what to do. I think I just need to give it a bit of time though, let it sink in, you know.” “Yeah I know,” Mac said, giving her friend a hug. “I’m always here if you need me, remember that.” “Thanks Mac,” Danni said, wiping her eyes. “About the case…?” “Yes well, I don’t want to push you, but you are our best chance to get this girl, if she’s guilty. And so far it’s only surveillance, nothing heavy so you should be fine.” “Yeah, your probably right. I guess I was just over reacting.” “No, don’t think that, you did the right thing.” “Thanks again Mac, I’ll stay on the case, and thanks for being so understanding,” Danni smiled and got up, closing the door behind her. ‘There were moments of gold, And there were flashes of light, There were things we'd never do again, But then they'd always seemed right, There were nights of endless pleasure, It was more than all your laws allow, Baby, Baby, Baby.’
