Mac glared at Peter, who was looking pleased with himself! “Spit it out Mac please!” Ange said. “Ok, ok, but first someone make me a cup of coffee please!” “Whatever you say boss,” Danni and Oscar said in unison. “Ok well.” Mac said, now with her cup of coffee in hand. “According to this,” she said, pointing to a file. “There was a drug case about two months ago, that was never solved by the drug squad.” “What’s that got to do with us?” asked Pete. “Well if you’ll be quiet I’ll tell you!” Mac continued, “two months ago the drug squad stuffed up what was going to be the biggest drug bust in the history of.. of.. I don’t know what of, but you get the picture.” “What, that it was big?” laughed Pete. “Anyway,” Mac continued, “we have received word that they are back in town and are looking for new buyers. I want two of you to be those buyers. Any volunteers?” “Oh Mac, sounds pretty basic stuff, I want something exciting!” “Yeah, I know Danni, but just think how much we can brag to the drug squad if we solve what they stuffed up!” “Ok, I’ll do it,” sighed Oscar. “Yeah, I’ll go with him,” said Angie. “Need a woman’s touch these drug dealers!” “Ok, that’s settled then, Peter how about you set up the com-V and get the wires ready.” “Hey Mac,” said Danni, “what about me?” “You can umm… stand and look pretty, and oh I don’t know, help Pete!” “Huh, fine!” “Hey Mac?” “Yes Ange.” “Well, if we bust these guys for a few 100 grams of coke, they won’t go to jail for very long.” “Yeah, I know, but we’ve been ordered to catch as many dealers as we can, and get them off the street.” “Okay!” - Small busy Café on a side street. Angie and Oscar walk up to an empty table, look around a bit and sit down together. Oscar is wearing a gray business suit and tie. Angie is dressed in a black skirt and blouse. They order a cup of coffee each and chat politely to each other . Two men in dark suits come walking up the side street. One has blonde hair the other brown. Oscar looks at them and nods. They weave their way in between the people and sit down at Oscar and Angie’s table. “Hello mate,” Oscar says, shaking the brown haired man’s hand. “I’m Paul, and this is my girlfriend Susie, I understand you have some merchandise that would interest me?” “That depends, on weather or not you have what could interest me,” the blonde haired man replied deeply. “You mean money? Plenty of that my friend, don’t you worry.” “Then come with me, we will go to where it is safe, then maybe we do some business.” The brown haired man motioned with a dark scaly hand, for them to come. “I am Jacob. This is Richard. From now on you will talk about this to only us. Maybe later we introduce you to our boss.” “When will that be?” asked Oscar. Angie shot him a warning glance. “When we trust each other.” He answered stiffly, glaring at Oscar. “Hmm, so what kind of cash are we looking at here?” said Oscar, trying to lighten the atmosphere. “Depends, how much you got?” answered Richard. “A lot.” “Exactly how much are we talking here Paul?” asked Jacob. “A few million, like I said, how much do you want?” The two men looked and each other and smiled. “We meet here tomorrow,” Jacob said, pointing to an old warehouse. “You bring the money, we bring the drugs.” “What time?” asked Oscar. “We’ll be in touch,” replied Richard. “Ok, here’s my mobile number,” Oscar said, handing him a slip of paper. “Bye guys!” Angie said in a flirtatious voice. “Bye Susie,” Jacob replied, looking Angie up and down as he did so. The two men strode off looking pleased with themselves. “What slimy bastards,” Angie said in disgust, as soon as they were out of earshot. “Slimy or not, you’ll have to put up with them for a few more days yet!” Oscar retorted. - Back at the Crimplex. “How did it go guys?” Mac asked as soon as Oscar and Angie were changed. “Pretty good,” answered Angie. “We are meeting them tomorrow in front of an old warehouse. They bring the drugs we bring the money, that sort of thing. They are both slime balls though.” “Yeah,” put in Oscar. “Should have seen the way Jacob looked at Ange.” “Yuk,” said Mac. “Let me know what time ok?” Oscar nodded. Mac then turned and motioned for Pete and Danni to come over. She told them what was happening. “Yeah we know,” replied Danni, “we were listening remember?” “That’s right, you were too,” said Mac. Well, catch you guys tomorrow, I’m going home! “Well if she can go home then so can the rest of us!” yelled Pete! - Danni’s apartment. “Yep, ok, see you tomorrow Ange, bye!” Danni said goodbye to Angie on the telephone and grabbed her pajamas from the draw. She buttoned them up and brushed her hair, then jumped into bed. She turned out the light and lay down to try and get to sleep. -Angie’s apartment. Angie pulled her wet hair into a loose ponytail and went to the kitchen. She grabbed a coke from the fridge and turned on some music. S he jumped on to her bed and pulled a magazine out from under it. -Danni’s apartment, a few hours later.. Danni sat up suddenly her thoughts racing through her mind like motor cars. She was sweating heavily and she climbed out of bed. As she went to put some cold water on her face her hands started shaking. - The Crimplex the next morning. “Morning all!” said Mac, cheerfully. “How are we?” “Fine thanks,” replied Angie and Pete. “Yeah I’m ok,” said Oscar. What about you Dan? “Yeah what?” Danni replied. “I said how are you?” inquired Mac. “Yeah about that,” mumbled Danni. The others looked at each other but said nothing. “Ok, umm Ange, Oscar, you guys heard from Jacob and Richard yet?” “Nah not yet Mac, let you know when we do though,” said Oscar. “Ok,” replied Mac, “I’ll be in my office.” - A number of hours later. Oscar’s mobile rang. He answered it after the second ring. “Hello? Paul speaking.” “Ah Paul, it is you. We must meet today, say.. 5 o’clock? “Yeah that suites me fine, in front of the warehouse?” “Yes, and don’t be late.” As Oscar went to say goodbye, he heard the toneless beeping sound. Meaning he had already hung up. “Geez, that was quick,” Oscar mumbled to himself. “Ok everyone gather round, that was Jacob, or Richard or whoever. Anyway.. Someone get Mac will you!” Angie ran into Mac’s office and asked her to join them. As Mac came within hearing distance Oscar continued. “As I was saying..” “Yeah cut to the chase Stonie will you!” said Pete. “He wants to say that Jacob rang and is meeting him and Ange in front of the warehouse at 5 o’clock,” said Danni. “Hey.. how did you..? Were you listening to my conversation? How did you know the time? I didn’t say it out loud. And how did you know it was Jacob, not Richard? “Oh… I umm…. had a dre..” The others looked at her expectantly . “Nothing, just a lucky guess,” she replied. “Is she right Oscar?” asked Mac. “Yeah she is, so Church we need to be ready by about 4 30 ok?” “Fine with me, coming Danni?” Peter asked. “Yeah umm.. coming,” Danni replied. - The Crimplex, just after 4 30. Angie and Oscar are changed into more suitable clothing and wearing wires. “Ok everyone, today’s the day we bust them.” Announced Mac. “I know it seems like basic stuff, but these guys are professionals, they know what they’re doing and may react badly when they are caught. The code word is ‘what the hell’s going on?’ You all ready?” “Yeah Mac,” replied Angie and Oscar. “Pete?” “Yep fine. The com-V will be parked around the corner ok guys.” - In front of the warehouse. Angie and Oscar arrive in front of the warehouse at two minutes to five. Angie is dressed in a pale blue short skirt and top. Oscar is wearing a brown suit and carrying a brief case what appears to be ‘full’ of money. They see the two men they met yesterday coming towards them, followed by another man. He looks much older and has brown, slightly red hair. As they get closer Jacob says, “Paul, Susie, glad you could make it . This is our supplier, Marketto. You bring the money?” “Sure did,” answered Oscar, as he opened the brief case. “Excellent,” replied Marketto, in a rather deep, squeaky voice. “Now you come with us.” “Err.. what’s wrong with here?” asked Angie. “It is not safe, you come.” Angie and Oscar followed the three men along the street and into another warehouse a few blocks from the other one. Oscar knew that the deal couldn’t go ahead, as Pete would never reach them in time. As they entered the warehouse Angie said, “ Oh guys we didn’t bring enough money to buy all this. We’ll have to come back tomorrow.” “Backing out are we Paul, Susie?” said Marketto. “Nobody backs out of our deals..” “Oh no I didn’t mean it like that, I just meant um..” she looked at Oscar in desperation. “She means that I’ll stay here and Susie will go and get the rest of the money, won’t you Suse?” said Oscar. “Oh right. You better be back here awful quick missy or you won’t be seeing your boyfriend here again,” said Marketto. Angie looked at Oscar doubtfully. “Just go,” Oscar whispered to her. “I’ll be fine. I promise.” Angie ran out of the building and up to where Peter and Danni were in the Com-V Pete opened the door and handed her a black brief case, also filled with money and a tracker. “I’ll move so we’ll be just around the corner,” said Pete. He gave Ange a quick kiss on the forehead and Danni mouthed good luck. Angie then made her way back to the building. As she entered she noticed that Oscar was being held tightly by Jacob and Marketto was holding the wire that was once attached to Oscar. “Bloody cops,” yelled Jacob. “What the hell’s going on?” Angie screamed into her wire. “We know your cops missy so don’t try anything smart,” growled Richard. “Yeah? Well any minute now my operatives will be busting through that door to kick your ass,” yelled back Angie. “Not if I can help it,” replied Marketto as he drew his gun that was hidden inside his coat. As soon as Marketto said that, Pete burst through the door. “Freeze, Police,” he yelled. With Danni standing behind him, also with her gun drawn. As Pete moved towards them Oscar broke free and tackled Jacob. Richard made a run for it but was stopped by Danni. As Peter continued to move forward Marketto grabbed Angie around the neck and put the gun to her head. “Don’t come any closer or I’ll shoot your friend.” Pete stopped where he was. “Now, everyone do what I tell you or the girl dies. You, holding the gun put it down now.” Church did as he was told. “Now you, Paul, or whatever your name is, let go of Jacob and put your hands on you head.” Meanwhile Danni had grabbed her mobile and had already phoned Mac and told her where they were. As soon as Marketto saw this he fired a few shots in the air. Angie screamed and Danni dropped both her mobile and gun. Richard ran to where Jacob was standing and they awaited orders from their boss. “Marketto, be reasonable, you should put the gun down, before anything serious happens, put the gun down. We don’t have anything on you yet, you could walk out of here and we won’t follow.” Said Peter anxiously. “No, I’m leaving with this here girl and my two companions, right now. Anyone tries to follow me and I so much as sniff a police siren, and I’ll blow this girls brains to hell and back.” Angie muffled a cry of pain as Marketto forced her outside into the awaiting car. Then Marketto, Jacob, Richard and the money followed. As Danni, Church and Oscar watched on, they drove off. As soon as they were out of sight Peter ran to the combi and pulled out the monitor for the tracker. Moment’s later Mac pulled up in her car. Followed by a ton of police cars. “What the hell happened?” Yelled Mac. “Where is Angie?” “They took her with them as a hostage,” said Church quietly. “Why didn’t one of you go after them?” she replied angrily. “He said he’d ‘blow her brains to hell and back if he so much as sniffed a police car’, to be exact.” Said Pete. “Oh, I see. Shit, any idea where they were going?” “Yeah, Church has them on the tracker,” replied Oscar, “And I got the car rego.” “Ok, I’ll get a search done on that now. In the mean time I need you to tell me exactly what happened. I’ll get this lot to search this warehouse, see if there’s anything useful in it.” Mac said, pointing to the uniformed police officers standing around waiting for instructions. “I’m losing the signal, they’re getting to far away,” Peter informed them. “Well follow them, just till you know where they are and keep in contact,” Mac instructed him. Church jumped in his car and took off in the direction the tracker was pointing at. They were heading to the far side of the city. -The car where Angie is. “Ok girly, we’re going to split up,” Marketto informed her. “You’re coming with me. Jacob, you and Richard get the money and go to where we discussed. I’ll meet you later. Me and this here girl will be at my place, you guys take the car.” -Back at the warehouse. Fifteen minutes later, Mac had been told exactly what had happened. And they were told who owned the car, Mario Sistini. “But isn’t he in jail still Mac?” “Yes he is Danni, but they must be contacts of his.” “I didn’t think he was into this kind of stuff?” “I wouldn’t put it past him.” -Peter’s car. As Peter continued to follow the car, it suddenly changed its course and, after pausing for a moment, it continued to the heart of the city. -The house that Jacob and Richard stoppped at. After stopping at the arranged, run down house. The two men proceeded to carry the bags of money into the house and unload them. As they were doing so, they found the tracker.. “Those bloody cops,” yelled Richard. “They’ve been following us!” Jacob quickly grabbed the small machine and smashed it to bits. “Not any more,” he pronounced with an evil smile. -Peter’s car. “Mac, Mac hello? “Yeah Pete, any luck?” “No, bloody hell I’ve lost them.” “What happened?” “They were heading to the outskirts of Melbourne, then they paused and changed course, and began headed straight back into the city. Then the signal died.” “Ok, can you drive around in the area they paused at and tell me what you find?” “Yeah, sure Mac, call you in 10.” “Bye.” Pete drove to the approximate area that the signal has paused at. Not really knowing where to start, he knocked on a few doors in different streets, asking if they had seen the car Angie had been taken away in. He didn’t have any luck. As a last resort he decided to head back into the city and try the area that he had last received a signal from. He pulled into a small, quiet, street with nice green front lawns. He saw a man that matched Jacob’s description run across the road. The man ran into a house nearby, but as Church looked closer he realised it couldn’t be him, he had a beard and rather odd looking glasses. Feeling very depressed he backed out of the street and headed back to the warehouse. -The warehouse. As they left the warehouse, the sun was just setting. “Ok guys, I know you don’t want to here this but, go home and try to get some sleep, we’re going to need you all tomorrow.” Mac put her arm around Danni as she said this. “Have you heard from Pete?” Danni asked. “He is going to call me..” replied Mac, and as she did so, her mobile rang. “Pete?” she answered. “Yeah it’s me, no luck. I’m sorry.” “It’s not your fault, see you at the Crimplex.” “Ok, bye.” She hung up sadly. “But Mac, you know how unlikely it will be for Ange to be a.a.l..live tomorrow. We can’t just go home and wait,” said Oscar quietly. “I know, but searching the city in the dark certainly won’t do any good either. Come on, pizza, on me at the Crimplex.” Mac said, her voice wavering as she said so. - The Crimplex a number of hours later . Mac began to pick up all the empty pizza boxes and glasses that were on the floor. She crammed them into the bin and slowly sank onto her chair. If anything happened to Angie, she didn’t think she could cope. She felt the tears coming. She let them fall. They slowly slid down her face as she choked back a sob. - Peter’s house. Pete unlocked the door to his apartment and slowly walked inside. His eyes came to rest upon the photo of him, Mac, Oscar, Danni and Angie. He walked to the fridge and pulled out a can of beer. Angie was one of the most important people in the world to him, he loved her like a sister.. -Danni’s house. Danni crawled into bed, her clothes still on, and pulled the covers over her head. What had happened to Angie was her fault. Angie was one of her best friends, and what made it worse was, she had known it was going to happen, she just didn’t want to believe it. She’d thought it was just a dream. -Oscar’s house. Oscar couldn’t believe what had happened. He’d said it would be all right, he’d promised. If anything happened to Angie now he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. As he sat down at his desk, he felt a lump form in his throat. He picked up a photo of Angie and his stomach twisted into a knot. She didn’t even know how he felt.. -Danni’s house. Danni opened her eyes quickly, and realised the dream she had just had. Struggling to hold onto what was now flashing around in her mind, she picked up the phone and called Mac. -The Crimplex, 1 o’clock in the morninng. Danni, Oscar and Pete are standing in front of the Crimplex. Danni, in an oversized red shirt and jeans. Pete in the clothes he wore the previous day, and Oscar in his dressing gown. “You better have a good reason for waking me up Dan, I need my beauty sleep!” Oscar said. “Oscar, anymore beauty sleep and you’ll turn into a girl,” Pete teased, trying to lighten the mood. At that moment, Mac pulled up in her car. Danni ran over and spoke to her quickly; Mac then ordered the others to jump in. As Mac began heading in the direction the tracker had shown earlier, Danni began to try and explain herself. “Roberto showed me a drawing of, of, a house.” Danni stammered. As she continued her brow furrowed in concentration as she struggled to remember what the intellectually disabled boy had shown her. “And there was a picture, of Mario, and a car, his car? Yes, yes it was. There was also a conversation, between Marko and Mario, I’m sure it was Marko . Only there was police officers all around.” “Must have been while he was in jail,” murmured Mac. “Yeah,” said Danni, sounding side tracked. “Umm the house..” she trailed off. “The most noticeable thing about the house was the lawn it looked so fresh and vibrant.” Danni smacked her forehead in frustration. “Oh, why can’t I remember more! -” She stopped suddenly as Pete jumped in. “That lawn, the tracker paused somewhere along the way and I pulled up in a street, the first thing I noticed was the lawns.” “Which street was it Pete?” Mac said urgently. “Li…Liason, replied Danni. I remember now, the sign post is almost falling down and it has… graffiti on it...” She trailed off again, murmuring occasionally to herself as things became clearer and clearer. Mac drew the car to a holt at the corner of the street. She motioned for Pete and Oscar to quietly get out of the car. Mac and Danni followed cautiously. “Where should we start?” Oscar inquired. “That house there,” Pete said, pointing towards the house he had seen the man run into earlier. “Why that one?” “I saw a man run into it earlier, he looked vaguely like Jacob, only he had a beard and glasses.” Pete replied to Oscar. “Why didn’t you mention this before?” Mac asked. “Well… I didn’t think they were that smart…” Pete replied sheepishly. Mac and Oscar drew their guns and they headed towards the front of the house. Pete and Danni headed for back. Mac figured they wouldn’t be expecting anyone at this hour and they’d maybe even be asleep. Mac counted 1…2…3… then her and Oscar burst into the house. “Freeze, police.” She yelled heading towards what looked to be the main room. There she found Angie, bound and gagged, with huge bruises all over her face and arms. Oscar ran over to her. “Oh Ange, I was so worried, are you alright?” Angie nodded silently, tears coming to her eyes. Oscar cut the splintery, rough rope that held her to the chair and put his arms around her. At that moment, Pete marched in holding Jacob and Richard by their shirt collar. Mac ran over and helped Pete handcuff them. “Where’s Marko?” Danni asked, her gun still in her shaking hands. “He…he got away Ange.” Pete said, coming up to Angie and planting a kiss on her tear stained face. “I’m really sorry, but I couldn’t get all 3.” “It’s okay Pete, I’m just so relieved you guys finally got here.” Mac shut her mobile with a snap, bringing everyone back to attention. “I just called the Ambulance and the ‘uniforms’. They’ll be here to pick them up any minute now.” Mac walked over to Angie and put her arm around her, escorting her to the door. “Come on Ange we need to get you to hospital.” She said. “No…no I’m fine, really.” “Nope, you going whether you like it or not.” Oscar replied firmly. Angie gave in, too weak and tired to resist any longer. Danni and Pete handed the two men over to the uniformed police officers as they came in the door. Mac left Oscar to look after Angie and she headed back in the house to comfort Danni. “That was good work Danni.” Mac said in a business like tone. Then, in a softer more soothing voice, she added, “Come stay at my apartment tonight, and, your having the day off tomorrow.” “Thanks so much Mac,” Danni replied as Mac opened the car door for Danni. “Mac, can you drop me off at the hospital on the way?” Pete asked. “Stonie’s gone with Ange.” “Sure Pete,” Mac replied with a smile. Mac started the engine and drove off. What they didn’t know, was that Marko was watching the whole endeavor. The end!
