Preambles
1st Marking Period

Preamble 1:  1/29/07

You have 4 glasses of water. In which cup will a teabag dissolve the quickest? In which cup will an ice cube melt the fastest? In which cup will a teaspoon of salt dissolve the quickest? Rank the cups for each of those situations.

1. 300mL at 25 deg C2. 300mL at 85 deg C
3. 50mL at 25 deg C4. 50mL at 85 deg C

Preamble 2:  1/30/07
You have a sugar solution of a certain concentration (call this solution A). You pour 1/4 of this solution into a beaker, and add an equivalent volume of water (call this solution B)

1) What is the ratio of amount of sugar between A and B?
2) What is the ratio of volumes between A and B?
3) What is the ratio of concentrations between A and B?
4) How much water would you add to A to create the concentration of B?

Now, assume that solution A started with a volume of 155mL and 13g of glucose (C6H12O6) dissolved in it.
Calculate the concentration of solution A and B in the following concentration types:
Mass percent
Molarity
Molality

Preamble 3:  1/31/07
What are some of your ideas/knowledge about solubility, dissolving, and solutions?   What are some of your questions about those topics?
How do you think volume and temperature will relate to the solubility of salt?

Preamble 4:  2/6/07
You need to make 535 mL of a sugar solution with a concentration of 2.324 x 10 ^-3 M. However, you have solutions of various concentrations and volumes to start with. How much of each solution and water will you need to combine together?
A) 1.1 L of 1M solution
B) 300. mL of 2.2 x 10 ^-2 M solution
C) 50. mL of 3M solution
D) 66 mL of 1.32 x 10 ^-1 M solution
