Alpha Phi Alpha, the first collegiate Greek-lettered fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The founders, known as the Jewels:

Henry Arthur Callis
Charles Henry Chapman
EugeneKinkle Jones
George Biddle Kelly
Nathaniel Allison Murray
Robert Harold Ogle
Vertner Woodson Tandy

were young college men who felt the need for a stronger foundation of brotherhood between Black men in college and beyond. These men were the pioneers of Black Greek Life. The Fraternity Began as a study and support group, organized to lend a helping hand to minorities who were discriminated against racially or socially. Later, this study group grew into a society. And then, finally, fraternity. Since the beginning, Alpha Phi Alpha has remained strong upon the principles of scholarship, fellowship, strong character, and the uplifting of humanity.
Very influential and powerful speakers, leaders, and officials have held up the principles of Alpha Phi Alpha by stepping into the forefront of society's issues. These Brothers include:

Jesse Owens
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
W.E.B. Dubois
Thurgood Marshall
Adam Clayton Powell Jr
And many, many more....
