Character's Full name:
Amandine Clothile, Marquise de Merteuil
Occupation:
Instructor in the fine art of love and seduction
Physical Description:
Shrewd, laughing blue eyes, surrounded by dark heavy lashes. She could easily pass for someone a decade her junio, with her pale flawless skin, chiseled cheekbones and sculpted jaw. When deep in thought, one might see a few faint lines at the corners of her deep-set eyes and upon her marble forehead, but these could have been from laughter as well as years, for laughter was as much in her nature as power. Her hands, so infinitately skills and dexterous, were long fingered and finely boned. Reddish highlights glint in thick golden hair, full red lips parted faintly, and the delicately drawn features, coupled with the glow of honey-tinged complexion, created a visage worthy of a portrait gallery. The suggestion of a strong body tempered by gentle curves complete the picture of an extraordinarily attractive woman.
Friendships/Relationships:
The Vicomte de Valmont, her former lover and conspirator
Gercourt, former lover on whom she plans revenge
Madame Volanges - Her simple-minded cousin
Cecile Volanges - Her innocent and simple-minded cousin, the tool of her revenge against Gercourt.
Personal History:
The Marquise de Merteuil is a self-described, self-made woman - she is her own creator. As a young girl Merteuil refused to let fate or society describe her, and began to compose herself. After her husband died, she set about educating herself and creating a reputation. Since then, she has remained at the top of the heap through careful manipulation, never once letting her guard down.
The Marquise is not particularly interested in love, nor does she seem to believe that love exists except as that capacity men and women have to enslave each other. While she admits that it is possible that she and the Vicomte de Valmont once loved each other, she will not allow herself to be placed in a position where another has power over her, or she may lose the power she has. She is a shrewd letter writer, with a particular gift for lifting phrases out of other people's letters and using their words as if they were her own. Which aids her optaining her goals and destroying her enemies.

French emigre relocated to England.
