Character's Full name:
Jacques Rene Hebert
Occupation:
Journalist
Physical Description:
The fine, almost aristocratic features seem entirely out of place with the disordered appearance of their bearer. Hebert is of average height, always clothed in the manner of the Sans-cullottes, and is in the habit of gesticulating somewhat gracefully as he speaks, another strange contrast with the harsh invectives that pour from his lips.
Friendships/Relationships:
Marat- disciple
Robespierre- enemy
Desmoulins- bitter enemy
Chaumette - partner in arms
Personal History:
The son of a goldsmith, his family was ruined by a lawsuit, and the young Hebert was left to fend for himself on the streets of Paris. He first became known for a series of pamphlets attacking the Gironde, and then as the writor of the radical journal Pere Duchesne. The mob now eating out of his hand, he started a movement to abolish all religion, and replace it with a cult of reason. He was guillotined, along with many devoted followers, in March of 1794.
Character's connection to the League, or the Revolution:
He instigated many of the riots described in Scaramouche. His journal steered the views of the radical left, and the public outrage at his death lead to the defeat of Robespierre.
