PORTER'S ROAD

A cast of thousands had assembled at the meeting place and they were all early. Come to think of it I was early too, but I still have to write the trip report. Which brings up a sore point, you show up early, money in pocket, full tank of juice, sway bars connected until it really gets tough, ten minutes down the road and a quick stop for fuel. Maybe that person should write the report. We set off again and then stop for someone else who needs an EFTPOS machine, another candidate? Off we go again to the start of the track, fifteen minutes from the meeting place, and another stop to disconnect sway bars. Another candidate for the trip report maybe. Sorry, I just don't like writing trip reports but I suppose that little whinge filled up some space.

Down we go slowly but surely with plenty of video footage and snap shots. Four Wranglers, one CJ8, a Lowlux and a Rangie make their way to the bottom without too much trouble, except for a certain Hilux driver who managed to get hung up on a rock the size of a Mini which everyone else managed to drive around.

Morning tea was enjoyed in a warm sunny clearing before setting off again. Pas was experiencing tire clearance problems with his new windies so he chose to presence his vehicle and go out another way. The climb out had a few newer drives thinking "are we going up there", but after a bit of encouragement everyone made it with varying degrees of finesse. No towing was required, well done everyone.

With everyone up we headed for the park at Kenthurst for a quiet lunch break, and to wait for Pas. The fete put an end to the quiet lunch idea, so it was find a parking spot and grab a sausage sandwich from sausage sizzle. Lunch out of the way and Mark and Lyn decide to take advantage of the sunshine and go home to wash the dog.

No color pics available.

Ever seen a Rangie do this? Either had we!

Anthonys J10

This Rangie had just got a new set of meats and was having clearance issues.

The rest of us went out for a bit more exploring but if I told you what we found I'd have to kill you. If you really want to know you'll just have to come along next time we head out that way. Finally, thanks to Dave and Anthony for showing the way.

Those in the know rang early to book in, whilst some advised they couldn't make the meeting place but would be at the campsite for Saturday night. Others had family commitments on Sunday but still wanted to participate in the nite run. No problem!

To accommodate the local government elections the meeting time was set for 11.00am at the usual spot just off the F3. It had rained on Thursday and Friday so expectations were for the trip to be a bit on the damp side. But Saturday's weather was great. When Smie and the 'lations arrived there was the Glassford billy lids and John, Matt Rasdall with more billy lids, Ray and Liz, Viv, Bruce and 'Lisha Cookie waiting.

Keith "Rusty" Smith, Dave and Anthony Camilleri, and Cliff "Poppa Smurf" were expecting to meet up with us later in the day.

Not far from the meeting place we stopped and viewed a piece of local logging history, then a little further up the track we started using the little stick. After playing on a few pieces of dirt that trail bikes usually call their own it was across to the lookout for lunch. After lunch the tracks below the lookout kept us busy for the rest of the afternoon. We met Poppa Smurf on the road, and he joined in the fun too! Stumps were drawn about five o'clock and we headed to the campsite. Camp was set up in the usual spot then everyone settled down to relax and have dinner. A bit later Dave and Anthony turned up. Meanwhile, people were asking, "Where's Rusty?".

With the planned departure tine fast approaching we were still waiting for Rusty. So we went on the night run anyway! After driving around the tracks for an hour and a half we expected to see Rusty when we returned to camp. Guess what? No Rusty! So everyone sat round the fire, drank port and talked bullshit anyway. John took his bat and ball and went home.

Sunday was another glorious day weatherwise. We tackled a toughie before lunch then after lunch tackled another. Two tough tracks for the day!

To finish the day off Poppa Smurf led the troops on a hilarious loop through eh bush that put the icing on the cake. So the day was glorious 4Wdrivingwise as well. Ask anyone who went.

And guess what? Yeah, No Rusty!

SMIE P.S. If you liked this trip then book in for Brettlie's trip to Death Valley
