Porter's Road

"The Porters road trip was pretty hard, Warren's Jeep (CJ8 35s, 4 ft lift, ARB locked both ends) got through without any war wounds, Anthonys sufferd a broken front universal (stock CJ7), I corkscrewed both rear axles in my GPW (they were both new too), oh and I put a dent in the side. Anthony's already fixed his, total cost of damage $146, I'm not as quick to fix mine but I suppose it will cost $55 each axle and a hammer will fix the dent. Still a pretty cheap weekend."

Thanks for the info and pics Dave C - here they are.

On the 1st of August the club did the chicken route of Porters Road. It was still relatively difficult. We had several stock Jeeps. No one sustained undrivable damage. Dave and Anthony took a video of this second outing, which showed some great situations. I disgraced myself by hi centering TankJirl on both diffs. I will compile a video for Christmas time distribution as both trips are on film. See September/October Newsletter fot the "Official" report.

H E L L AND BACK!

What a shocker of a day trip. Perhaps it was just the shock of the difficult grade of the trail. Triple double overhead AAA rating 100%. Only 5 Jeeps and 2 60 series 'Cruisers dared to attend. Did everyone know something I didn't? The only thing that kept me sane was copious cigas, not that they really helped. Spending most of the day either stressing or worrying was definitely out of character for me. I had been having very bad drives lately, this was to prove no different. Somebody make me angry again so I can drive with purpose! I almost abandoned Tankjirl yet it wasn't even her fault, frustration. One word: Exilherating.

Sooo arriving late at Dural Maccas we headed off. It always gets me going to see a line of Jeeps driving along. 10km out of Dural and were driving between fenced paddocks and large properties. The fenceline gave way to scrub and a very slim trail. So the paintwork was getting a workout as well as the mechanicals. Soon we were traversing large puddles. Then about 2km on a flat spot we did some discoing on Rob's jeep. Thanks for the help Warren.

The track headed downhill. Straight down. So there it was "Winchbreak Pass" etched into a sanstone cliff face. What was that stench of diff oil? One oil spot, two oil spots, I can't look anymore. Ohh! and now small body parts scattered about. Vehicle's die here. This was not a happy place. We walked it, deciding to do or not to do. How could I doubt the fearless Jeepers, ofcourse we would attempt it! Crazy assed mutha fuckers. But that's not all! round the bend and another ledge. Rocky, snotty, spotting required. Had I known at the time we go out the way we come in - I probably would have done it anyhow. But geez it was a bad bad trail. That was at about 10.30.

We still had a couple of vehicles up top when three bushwalkers come down. Chatting away at the bend on the track, questioning as to whether we were going to bring those vehicles down. They nearly keeled over when they saw a plethora of jeeps past the bend that had already gotten down! Jeep Envy! They were surprised to see no film crew, commenting this should be on film. Jeep pride, I just love it. They were looking for the river. I was looking for enlightenment.

We were all down the ledges (or grief steps) by 12pm and kept heading downwards to the Hawksbury for lunch. The trail was still very much A grade traversing rock ledges large puddles and passing between overgrown vegetation. From the trail head to our lunch spot (the end of the track) was 2.5 km. You could say it was slow going.

Lunch then! I couldn't eat. I couldn't talk, I was, well, like a stunned mullet. Even Katrina's snide comments on smoking cigarettes failed to get a bite out of me. Katrina you were a real bitch to me that day, whadd I do to you??? ...Was this to be the trip I suffer body damage and become a blithering sulking mess? It wasn't over - we had to get up what we come down.

The view over the meandering Hawkesbury River was totally peaceful. The boats were soothing. I wondered if I could land in one if I jumped from here? Mmmaybe not, don't want to cause a scene. Move away from the river, now. I wishedI hadn't driven Tankjirl at all now was I being overprotective. Shes not locked

Old ruins of a massive stone place dating way back in time for sure was perched above the track. Sandstone blocks rendered. No roof but stunning all the same. Hide and seek would be fun for the kids. For more info on this "Inn" see the Land Rover Club of NSW as they ran a newsletter article.

There is always a whinger in some small jap sedan that has to stop and give us grief whilst we say our goodbyes, unable to see the beauty of a convoy of modified jeeps. Who does appreciate the beauty and strength of the bush more? and Why does use have to mean abuse to the masses?
