Adopted OES - Success Stories

These dogs were brought into rescue and are all now in homes.

Merlin was found wandering the streets of downtown Greensboro in a rainstorm. A very nice lady stopped her car in the rain and put him in her car. She took him to her vet and advertised that she had found him. After two weeks, he was placed in rescue to locate a home. He was such a well-behaved dog. Upon arrival at PetSmart in Raleigh, he stopped in front of a barrel of treats. He promptly went to "sit and stay" without being asked. He waited patiently for someone to notice and give him a treat. He was adopted by a vet assistant in Raleigh, who took him to work with her everyday.

These two dogs were rescued from different sources. One came from a telephone call and the other was on a rescue website. The dog on the left was adopted on Nov. 1, 1997 and had a happy life until his death at 13 years of age on July 28, 2006. The dog on the right was adopted in May of 1997 and lived until Nov. 24, 2001. He originally came from the Mississippi Gulf Coast; he was left at his groomers. He was a very large dog and could hold a soccer ball in his mouth! He was trained with great manners. He would "fetch" the newspaper in the morning. We were told he loved laying on the dock, watching the birds and fish in the gulf. In North Carolina, he loved the snow. He was amazed at the cold fluffy stuff and immensely enjoyed playing outside in the snow.

The dog at the top of the picture was classified as an OES by a kill shelter, but appears to be mostly Irish Wolfhound. This dog was in pretty good health, but had odd shaved patches on his stomach and chest. He had apparently never been inside a house, but quickly learned appropriate manners and was welcomed into the family. His name was Sampson, and was called Sam.

This little guy was near death from starvation. He was turned in overnight at the Raleigh shelter "drop box." He had apparently been tied and left to die. His collar was removed from his neck and he had open sores on his spine, neck, legs, and butt. He was so weak and had no muscles on his back legs; he could not sit down. He nibbled at everything looking for food. After three months of intensive care from a wonderful family in Virginia Beach, he was returned to us in a healthy condition. Unfortunately, they could not keep him, but they saved his life. He has been with us since June 25, 2000. His current picture is amazing. He is under the pear trees and near the Leyland Cyprus trees. He loves running under those trees for extra "back rubs."

This is the only girl we have rescued. We were her second rescue home. She developed an incontenience problem when she was neutered, but is fine on medication. Like most OES, she loves to be with her people and follows us everywhere. She doesn't enjoy swimming like some OES, but enjoys the lounge chairs! Whenever the parrot "sings" she howls. It is quite comical.

This boy followed some children to school when he was only about six weeks old. He was tiny and you could hold him in one hand. After no owners claimed him, he stayed with us. He is the best swimmer with those webbed feet and the best howler, too. He is a mostly black lab and a wonderful companion. He is 13 years old and graying in the muzzle and loosing muscle mass in his back legs.
