"PAWS WITH LOVE TO SHARE"
Snickers The Therapy Dog
Snickers and Casper
January 2006
Snickers and I both passed our Therapy Dog Test and are now out visiting.  We are both enjoying it very much and in a short time have made many new friends that share  our love of dogs. Snickers gets so excited  when she sees me bring her vest out, she  is such a people dog and loves attention so much, I feel this was the only way I could satisfy her need, LOL. There is no way I have enough free time to give her the attention she wants and this is the perfect way to do it. To see an individuals face light up when they see the dog coming is an incredible feeling, we may be that persons only visitor and how happy they are to see us, makes us feel great! I would recommend this to anyone with a good stable dog. Go get your dog tested then get out there and put a smile on someones face, you'll be glad you did!
Not only is Snickers helping people, she is also helping other dogs too. Casper, also a Therapy Dog, had a bad  encounter with an aggressive rottweiler in the building in which they live, and that left Casper very afraid of rottweilers. Now that the rottweiler is gone Casper's mom decided it was time to get Casper over his fear. We arranged a meeting, followed by a visit and  from the picture you can see they got along great, Casper is no longer afraid, we are so proud of  BOTH of them. Thanks for sending me the picture Pat.
Snickers has passed her IWC TEST
INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN
Snickers is now certified to participate in the PAWS to READ program. We go into school libraries and also into public libraries and sit and have the children read to the dogs. The children who are often shy find it easier to read to a dog than a large group of people and in the long run this  will build confidence and self esteem in these kids.
I'm really proud of my girl for passing this test as I have no children and Snickers has not been raised with kids other than the  occasional visit from a friend, and socialization at dog shows. She's just a natural.
Christmas 2006
Here are some pictures of our Christmas visit to the extended care facilitiy that we visit. We handed out bags of sugar-free candy to those who were allowed to have it. Snickers got dressed up for the occasion and everyone was impressed that she kept her antlers on for the whole visit. I am very lucky that the place I visit,  that nobody is afraid of the dog. Snickers is a big girl and can be a little pushy sometimes when she wants affection, she also loves to lean on people, something we have to be careful of. I have people waiting at the door every week becasue they know she is coming, others stash away their cookies and save them for Snickers, usually the shortbread ones with the jam in the middle, hehehe. There is one lady in particular that always gives Snickers a drink of water. Nursing homes are often very very warm inside and the dogs do get thirsty. I can't tell you how great I feel when I leave the home every week. It's only an hour and a half  visit, but the feeling lasts all day long.
