Never Again

Song Never Again sung by Nickleback from the Silver Side Up CD.

He's drunk again, it's time to fight
She must have done something wrong tonight
The living room becomes a boxing ring
It's time to run when you see him
Clenching his hands
She's just a woman
Never Again

All it was tonight was that she had been late getting home from work because of a car accident on the freeway, something she couldnt have avoided. It wasnt even her fault. On the way home, after getting off at her exit, she cried softly, already knowing what she could expect when she walked in the door.

When she walked past the window of the kitchen, she saw no lights on & her tears slowly stopped, but her heart was pounding in her ears as she opened the door, praying to God above that he had gone to bed. As she slowly turned the doorknob, her palms began to sweat, but she stilled her nerves as she opened the door & was greeted by the darkness of the house.

By now her sixteen-year-old son was in bed, & she prayed still, that her husband was too. But as soon as she walked inside & shut the door, she had just enough time to lock it behind her before a pair of rough hands gripped both arms above her elbows, pulling her into the living room & spun her around, throwing her into an opposite wall. She cried out as the impact shook her body.

I hear her scream, from down the hall
Amazing she can even talk at all
She cries to me, Go back to bed
I'm terrified that she'll wind up
Dead in his hands, She's just a woman
Never Again

The bang of his mothers body hitting the wall in the living room woke up the boy sleeping in his room. Randall scrambled from his bed & swung open his door, looking down the hall at the shadows moving around in the living room. Mom? Dad? He cried out & ran down the hall his room was located down.

Randall stopped in his tracks at the beginning of the hall when he saw his fathers fist land a punch on his mothers cheek. Stop it you bastard! He cried out.

Randy baby, his mother sobbed before her husband hit her again. Go back to bed, please!

Shut the Hell up & take your punishment you bitch!

Been there before, but not like this
Seen it before, but not like this
Never before have I ever
Seen it this bad
She's just a woman
Never Again

Randall backed up slowly before he turned & ran down the hall to his room & locked the door. He sat on the edge of his bed & picked up his cell phone, dialing the local police station, even as his heart pounded in his chest & he felt the familiar feeling of tears sting at his eyes. Hold on mom, he whispered as he ran his free hand through his hair.

Just tell the nurse, you slipped and fell
It starts to sting as it starts to swell
She looks at you, she wants the truth
It's right out there in the waiting room
With those hands
Lookin just as sweet as he can
Never Again

Randall wiped away his tears of anger as he sat by his mothers hospital bed in one of the chairs they had provided for him & his father. But thankfully his father was no longer in the room, having left after he begged his wife to forgive him, wiping away tears of his own.

Mom, why do you stay & put up with him? Randall asked the woman with the bruised & bloodied cheek, a black eye, & a few other wounds he was unable to see since her gown covered her abdomen.

Because hes your father & I love him baby, she answered, sniffling as a few tears rolled down her face on the opposite side of the bruise & blood marring her face.

Randall looked up at the door when the nurse handling his mothers case walked in & shut the door behind her. When the nurse sat in the chair his father once occupied, Randall bit his tongue & waited for the woman who was writing on her notepad to break the eerie silence.

Mrs. Kalic, I want to hear your side of this story your husband told me when I spoke to him, the nurse said, her lips pursing when she looked at the battered woman with a stern gaze.

Maam, I fell down the stairs to our basement, Diane spoke, looking the nurse in the eye.

Mrs. Kalic, those stairs leading down into your basement must be very slippery seeing as how this is the fifth time you have been in this hospital, in my ward, with the same old story, the nurse said, the irritation rising in her voice. Now tell me the truth.

Seen it before, but not like this
Been there before, but not like this
Never before have I ever
Seen it this bad
She's just a woman
Never Again

Father's a name you haven't earned yet
You're just a child with a temper
Haven't you heard "Don't hit a lady"?
Kickin' your ass would be a pleasure

Randall walked in the door to the home he shared with his parents. The only difference tonight was that his mother was being kept behind at the hospital for once against her will since they doubted her story this time.

Go to your room & finish any homework you dont have done yet, his father grumbled, slamming the door behind his form.

Randall turned around. I have all my homework done. Even if I had nothing done I wouldnt do it if you asked me. Youre not my father so I dont have to listen to you, he spat, narrowing his eyes at the man that stood in front of the door.

What the fuck are you talking about boy? I am your goddamned father, his father exclaimed, clenching his hands into fists.

Fathers a name you havent earned yet! Randall yelled. Youre just a child with a temper & thats the way youll always be. Never in my lifetime will you earn that title. For Gods fucking sake, havent you heard, dont hit a lady?

You better shut your trap boy before I take you on, his father threatened.

Id love to see you try to fight me you piece of shit. Kickin your ass would be a pleasure.

He's drunk again, it's time to fight
Same old shit, just on a different night
She grabs the gun, she's had enough
Tonight she'll find out how fucking
Tough is this man
Pulls the trigger as fast as she can
Never Again

A few days after being let out of the hospital, Dianes work had given her a whole week off to recover since she still looked pretty bad from her fall down the stairs. Although she should have been sitting at home, lying in bed to keep from agitating the fading bruises on her abdomen, Diane had been up & about working to try & keep the house clean.

Randall was spending the night at a friends house since she felt her son had needed a break from all that he went through in the house while she was away & after she had gotten back. He had been gone for a few hours at the maximum when her husband stumbled drunken in the house & shut the door.

Diane turned to face him, having just finished putting dishes in the dishwasher. Did you meet a few of the boys after work? She questioned.

What the fuck do you think you dumb bitch? He growled as she stumbled over to the couch & fell onto its cushions.

Diane felt her heart pounding in her chest as she cautiously made her way to the linen closet to grab the blankets she was replacing on their bed. As she made her way into the room, she heard him getting up from the couch. She cried out as he grabbed her by the hair, making her drop the blanket onto the floor & threw her down on the bed, pinning her with his weight.

When he began kissing her neck, Diane brought her knee up between his legs, delivering a painful blow to his groins, which made him roll off of her onto the bed. Before he could come at her again, she had grabbed the gun she got just the other day & had slipped into her nightstand, & turned to face him. She stood there with the gun pointed at him, looking at him with fear racing through her eyes & her heart pounding louder in her ears.

What the fuck are you doing? He demanded as he began to raise, his face beet red from the pain he was in.

Ending this, she said as she pulled the trigger, watching as her husband fell back onto the bed, some of his blood splattered on her jeans & sweater.
