As you enter the ballroom, you must bow or curtsie to the host or hostess.
A Ball was the perfect opportunity for ladies to display their elegant and expensive gowns. It was important for them to look their finest on such an occasion.

During the first half of the 19th Century, waltzing received a great deal of criticism and was thought to be inapropriate and disgraceful, but by the mid 1800's the Waltz had become rather acceptable and by the 1880's it was at the peak of its popularity and soon became a favorite.
