Welcome To Lovely Victoriana's Music Room

Music was the primary source of entertainment one of the greatest pleasures of the Victorian era.

Most well-bred young ladies and gentlemen were taught to play some sort of a musical instrument so they could bring the grace of music into their homes. Parlour recitals were a mark of cultural refinement.

For many years, the banjo had been dismissed as "nothing more than a melodious drum with a handle", but in 1866 the instrument became popular in high society.

Young gentlemen were paricularly fond of the violin. It's romantic music provided hours of listening pleasure in the parlour.

The piano was probably the most common instrument studied during the Victorian era. Many of the popular tunes played were marches and Stephen Foster melodies.

There were many famous composers who provided music during that time.
