The Rescue!!!

It had been a long, hard trip, not to mention lonely, so he was tired, but he still had two more days ride, to get back to Four Corners. It was getting late and he was about to stop for the night, when he spotted a rider less horse along the trail up ahead. There was a saddle on it's back, he wondered where the rider was, he rode up to the horse, it looked to have been there for a while, it had dried lather on it's flanks, so it had either been ridden hard, or had been a runaway. He dismounted and tied both his horse and the other horse, which was a beautiful white horse, obviously an expensive piece of horse flesh, to a nearby tree. He began to look around for the rider, fearing they had been thrown and perhaps injured.

Ezra walked about twenty yards from the horses and spotted a ravine, he stepped up to the edge and looked down, praying the rider had not fallen down it, for they would be deceased if they had. He saw a small ledge sticking out about fifteen or twenty feet down the side, what he saw there froze his heart. "Good Lord" There was a red headed woman laying on the ledge and she was not moving, she was laying face up and her eyes were closed. He needed to get down to her, to see if she was still alive, but how? He looked around and saw a large boulder near the edge of the ravine, so he went back to Chaucer and got his rope out of his saddlebags. He went back to the boulder and tied the rope tightly around it, getting down would be easy, the hard part would be getting back up with the woman, even if she was deceased, he would not leave the poor thing there.

He began to work his way down the side, trying to keep his footing on the rocks, he kept looking down to make sure he wasn't knocking any loose rocks or dirt onto her. He looked at her face, as he descended, she was pretty in a plain sort of way, her short red hair making her look prettier, plus she had a dusting of freckles over her nose and cheeks, he wondered what color her eyes were, he imagined green like his, or perhaps hazel.

He reached the ledge a few moments later, he knelt down next to her, "Darlin? Can you hear me?" Nothing, he put his fingers to her soft neck, feeling for a pulse, there was one, but it was somewhat weak and her breathing was shallow. He noticed her lips were very chapped and began to wonder how long she had been down there, even though, with the sun beating down on her, it wouldn't take too long for them to get chapped. He noticed that her skin was very pink, her face, neck, and arms were going to be very sunburned. She was wearing a sleeveless blouse, riding pants, and boots, they were very expensive clothes, so she must have money, but that would not help her now, so he would have to.

He began to check her for injuries, he found a very large bump on the back of her head and there was some blood on his hand when he pulled it away. He didn't find any broken bones, but he could see that bruises were forming on most of her body, she was going to be hurting when she regained consciousness, not to mention sick, he knew she had a concussion and he knew from experience, that you got sick to your stomach from a concussion. "I hope you can't feel anything right now Darlin, because it's going to hurt while I carry you back up." He brushed hair back from her forehead and prepared to carry her back up the ravine.

Ezra gently picked up the young woman, it wasn't hard, she was very light, with a small, delicate frame, which made him even more surprised that she didn't have any broken bones. "Hang on Darlin, I'll get you out of here." He gently draped her over his shoulder, then slowly began to climb back up the side of the ravine, it took him a while, he had to keep adjusting the woman over his shoulder with one hand, while holding the rope with the other. He finally reached the top, but it was dark by the time he did, he slowly made his way to the horses, moving the woman from over his shoulder, to cradling her in his arms. Once back to the horses, he gently laid her on the ground and went to Chaucer, he removed his bed roll, laying it out under the tree, then he placed her on the bed roll, covering her with his blanket, he needed to get a fire started.

He began looking for wood to start a fire, there wasn't much, but he thought he could manage to keep a fire going with it. He got the fire as close to the woman as possible, she needed to be kept warm, he just hoped he could help her, when she woke up, if she woke up. He kept the fire going as best he could, at one point during the night, he turned the woman on her side, after noticing her grimace of pain, she became relaxed again, after he turned her. He stayed awake and watched her all night, the dim light from the fire made her look even prettier, almost angelic. In the morning, when he could see, he would take care of her head and try to do something for her lips, which were cracked and bleeding slightly, it was too dark to do anything now and he did not want to risk hurting her more.

In the morning, Ezra gathered more wood and made some coffee, he was having trouble staying awake, but he would not sleep until he knew the lady would be all right. She had still not wakened and he was worried, so he decided to do what he could for her. He tore one of his shirts into strips, cringing as he did "There goes another shirt." He took one strip and wet it with some of the whiskey in his flask, he wanted to be sure the head wound was thoroughly cleaned, so it didn't get infected.

The woman flinched as he pressed the alcohol soaked cloth to the wound on the back of her head, but she still did not regain consciousness. He gently wiped the blood and dirt from the wound, then folded another piece of cloth and placed it on the wound, he wrapped the remaining strips around her head to hold the bandage in place. He took his handkerchief from his pocket and wet it with water, gently he wet her lips with it, cleaning the blood away and providing some much needed moisture. He pulled her bangs from under the bandage around her head, so they rested on top of it, he thought her red hair was the most beautiful he had ever seen, the short style she wore it in, perfectly complimented her face. The more he looked at her, the more beautiful she became, she was beginning to get to him, he felt affection growing for her in his heart.

Ezra resigned himself to not getting back to Four Corners anytime soon, it would be several days, at least, before the young woman would be in any condition to travel. He had attempted to get some water into her, unsuccessfully, he had continued to wet her lips periodically throughout the day, they seemed to be getting better, but her previously pink skin, was now a bright, painful looking red. He was becoming even more worried, as she still had not wakened, he opened her eyelids gently, to see if her eyes looked normal, they were larger than they should be, which confirmed that she had a concussion. He also noticed that her eyes were almost the same color as his, but hers had brown specks in them, they were beautiful eyes. "Come on Darlin, wake up." His heart went out to her, he couldn't resist the urge any longer, so he bent and kissed her lips, barely touching them, not wanting to hurt her.

Laura was beginning to become aware, she was afraid at first, because all she felt was a man's hands on her, they were soft, gentle hands, but she was still afraid, then she felt him kiss her softly, that shocked her, she desperately wanted to wake up so she could see who was touching her. She tried to move and regretted it, she hurt all over, she tried to remember what happened to her, but it wasn't coming to her, she was momentarily afraid that this man had caused her injuries, but that didn't feel right, plus his touch was gentle and healing. She felt him running a wet cloth over her lips, it felt wonderful, oh she wanted to wake, but she couldn't. As more time passed, she became more aware and the pain in her body got worse, especially her head and back, her stomach began to feel nauseous, she was going to be sick soon, there was no preventing it and she did not want to be ill in front of a strange man, but that too was something she couldn't prevent.

Ezra could tell that she was beginning to come around, she tried to move and he saw her grimace in pain, he ran his wet handkerchief over her lips again, the cracks in them were softening, but still looked pretty bad. He wished he could do something for her sunburned skin, it had become so red and the severe bruises on the back side of her body, were becoming dark and nasty, he had never seen bruises that bad before and could only imagine the pain she must be in. He wet the handkerchief again and began running it gently over her face, neck, and arms, taking her hands and wiping them too, she had such soft, delicate hands. He hoped this helped her sunburn, it hurt him to look at her red skin. He decided that before she woke up, he would quickly take his canteen, as well as hers, to the creek he had noticed before, to refill them.

It took him about ten minutes to walk to the creek, fill the canteens, and walk back, the day was getting hotter and he was thankful for the shade of the tree, the young woman did not need any more sun on her. He was feeling so tired, the coffee he had earlier had given him some energy, but it was wearing off, he would have to make some more. He reached up and wiped the sweat from his forehead as he walked back towards the tree, he hoped the young lady woke soon, he feared that she might be more seriously injured than he knew.

Laura finally opened her eyes, the first thing she noticed, when her vision cleared, was that she was alone, where was the man? Was he a dream? She slowly moved her head, the pain that shot through it was excruciating, but she saw two horses, so it wasn't a dream. She raised her hand to her head and felt the bandage, she tried to move again, it was a mistake and she lost consciousness again from the pain. She could still feel the pain though, everything hurt, her skin on her face, neck, and arms felt hot and tight, her back and bottom hurt almost as much as her head. Laura's mind drifted back to the man's touch that she had felt, she wondered where he was, she had so desperately wanted to see him. She wanted to see what kind of man could have such a soft, tender touch, his lips had even been incredibly soft. She felt herself slipping back into a deeper state of unconsciousness, the pain and all feeling leaving her senses as her mind went blank.

When Ezra got back to the tree, he got the fire going again and started more coffee, he was going to need it. He then took a swig from his flask, quenching his thirst, then tucked it back into his waistband. He moved to check on the lady, she was completely motionless again and her face was slack, he sighed, she was in a deep state of unconsciousness again. "Come on Darlin, don't give up on me." He could tell that she had moved around, but he didn't know if she had wakened. He wanted to sleep so badly, but he did not want to leave her unattended, in case she became ill. He had heard of instances where people choked to death on their own bile, because they were on their back and there was no place for it to go but back down, so he would not sleep, no matter how much he wanted to.

He took her canteen and began to pour the cool water over her arms, he could still feel the heat of her skin, it was badly burned and she had some blisters in places. He poured water over her neck, being careful not to get her blouse wet, then used his handkerchief again to wipe her face and lips, he wanted her to wake, he knew she would be sick, but once that passed, he would be able to get water into her, which she needed.

Ezra left her side, moving away to find more wood, but not going too far, he needed plenty of wood for the night. He had taken his green jacket off before going for the water, it was now hanging from his saddle horn, he would need it tonight. It still amazed him that it could get so hot during the day and still get so cold at night. He managed to gather up a good stack of wood, then moved back beside the woman, checking her pulse and feeling her skin, the shade of the tree and the cold water he had been applying, had cooled her skin some, but he poured more water over her sunburn and wet her lips with the handkerchief again. He found himself wanting to wet her lips with his own, so he bent and gently touched her lips with his, touching her as gently as he could, he wanted to devour her mouth, but he knew that would hurt her, so he pulled back away and caressed her cheek with his fingers. She was becoming more beautiful to him, he wanted to know more about her, how she got out here in the middle of nowhere, and where she was from. He knew he was falling for the little redhead, but he couldn't prevent it, he didn't even know her name.

Laura didn't know how long she had been unconscious, but it was now dark, she had a blanket pulled up over her, and there was a fire burning a few feet away. She saw the man sitting on the other side of the fire, he appeared to be eating, but it was hard to make things out in the dark, including what he looked like. She was having trouble focusing and her stomach lurched suddenly, she could not stop herself from heaving, which caused excruciating pain, but she continued and didn't even bring anything up, there was nothing in her stomach. She sensed the man move to her side quickly, holding her and trying to support her body, and make it easier for her. The heaving subsided and she slumped back against him, she could feel his strong body against hers and was grateful for the support and comfort he provided. She almost felt like the heroine in some kind of love story, the man was her knight in shining armor, but she still could not see what he looked like, she almost didn't care, he had saved her life and he was strong, he also smelled incredibly good.

Ezra had spotted her movements first, then heard her heaving, he got up and went to her as quickly as he could. He gently, but firmly took hold of her, trying to give her support, he watched as she heaved, she brought nothing up and the action caused her tremendous pain. He felt her slump against him as she finished, her body was trembling, he tried to hold her without hurting her, but that was hard. She did seem to slowly relax in his arms, so he spoke to her, "Are you all right Darlin?" The only response was a slight nod of her head. He started to lay her down, but she grabbed him and held on, so he continued to hold her, he realized that she was still far too weak to speak or move much, and being ill had not helped that. Ezra continued to hold her until she fell asleep, then he laid her back down in the bedroll, caressing her cheek lightly. He was glad she had gotten sick, even though nothing came up, now he could give her water, providing she didn't get sick again.

Laura felt so weak, her body was trembling and she felt more comfortable in the mans arms. When he spoke to her, it came out in a beautiful southern drawl, she couldn't wait until she could see what he looked like, everything else about him was wonderful, so she just knew he had to be handsome too, she just had not idea how handsome. She wanted to speak to him, but she couldn't so she just nodded instead. She felt him begin to lower her to the ground, so she grabbed him, not wanting to be on the hard ground again, and he was so much softer and warmer. She slowly relaxed and drifted to sleep, his embrace made her feel more comfortable than she had been in hours and she reveled in it until she fell into a deep sleep, then she wasn't aware of anything.

Ezra put the blanket back over her and moved back to where he had been sitting, he tossed his dinner away, it was cold and he was no longer hungry. He made more coffee, it would be another long night, he didn't know how much longer he could go without sleep. He had never felt so exhausted before in his life, but he was afraid to go to sleep until he knew she would be all right.

It was a long night and he was grateful that he had his cards and flask, the woman had not stirred all night, but she seemed to be all right, he had checked her pulse and breathing periodically, both were steady, so she was apparently in a deep, healing sleep. 'God, what I wouldn't give to sleep right now' he thought, but it was almost morning now, so he would need to be ready if she woke, she might be sick again. He filled a cup with water and proceeded to shave, he hadn't done that since before he found the woman, he hated being unshaven. He splashed water on his face, to freshen up, then applied a little of his cologne, all of that made him feel better, but he was still tired and his eyelids felt heavy.

Laura felt herself waking up, she was keenly aware of every inch of her body, for all of it hurt, she had never been in so much pain. She slowly opened her eyes, squinting at the light, once her eyes were open, she could see it was daylight now, she had slept all night, but she did feel better, her stomach was not queasy anymore. She tried to look around without moving her head, it hurt too much, she saw the man by his horse, it was a beautiful horse, she could spot beautiful horse flesh when she saw it. Her eyes drifted over the man, he was quite well dressed, he looked like a gambler actually, all she could see at the moment was the back of him, but that looked quite muscular. She was shocked by her *need* to see what he looked like, she forgot about everything else, she had to know. She tried to speak, hoping it would make him turn around, she could see his hands as they moved over his saddle bags, "Sir?" She managed to get out, then watched as he turned around to look at her, her breath caught in her throat. He was the most handsome man she had ever seen and his eyes were the color of sparkling emeralds, his gaze went straight into her soul. She had to close her eyes for a moment to compose herself, *that* man had been holding her, touching her, and KISSING her? She was amazed.

Ezra turned when he heard the woman speak, his eyes locked with hers and he saw surprise and delight in her eyes, before they closed for a moment. He grabbed the canteen and moved to her, he needed her to drink some water. He sat down and lifted her up, so she could drink "How are you feeling?"

"I hurt like hell, but I don't feel sick anymore." She gazed into his concerned eyes, being this close almost made her nervous.

"That is marvelous, what is your name Darlin?" Ezra helped her drink some of the water.

"Laura Charleston, but since you saved my life, you can call me anything you want." She smiled as he laughed, he had a wonderful, full laugh.

"Well Darlin, how about if I just call you Laura?"

"That would be fine, even though Darlin works for me." She loved the way her name sounded when he said it.

Ezra smiled, she must be feeling better, "Well, my name is Ezra Standish, but I insist you call me Ezra." He watched her nod. "Now, can you drink some more water?"

"Yes please, I am very thirsty."

Ezra lifted the canteen back to her lips, which looked much better, he didn't let her drink too much, for fear it would make her sick again.

"Thank you Ezra, that tasted wonderful."

"You are welcome Laura, can I ask you a question?"

"Certainly." She was puzzled, not knowing what he could want to ask her.

"What is a beautiful young woman, such as yourself, doing out here in the middle of nowhere?" He watched her try to smile, but could tell the movement hurt, he could see that in her eyes.

"My family's ranch is a days ride from here, I was out riding when my horse was spooked by a snake, he took off and I couldn't stop him, I saw the ravine approaching, then I don't remember anything until I woke up yesterday." She took a deep breath, it took a lot out of her to say all of that.

"You say your family's ranch is a days ride from here? Won't they be looking for you by now?" Ezra asked.

"No, they all went on a cattle drive, I was the only one there." She closed her eyes again, feeling tired.

"As soon as your well enough, I will take you there."

Laura let his warm, soft, southern drawl wash over her, as he asked his questions, she saw the exhaustion and weariness on his face, she wondered how long it had been since he slept. "When did you sleep last, Mr. Sta......Ezra?"

"I don't recall." That was the truth, he could no longer remember when he slept last. "I could not sleep until I knew you would be all right."

"Well, I feel much better now, why don't you get some sleep."

"I don't know Darlin, your eyes are still larger than they should be." He gazed into her eyes, they were so beautiful.

She sat there trying to convince him that he could get some sleep now, because she was all right, all the while her eyes were slowly closing, she was so tired. She tried to keep her eyes open, because she knew he would not go to sleep if she drifted off again, it was a losing battle, her head hurt so bad and she couldn't stop herself from going back to sleep. The last thing she felt, before she was soundly asleep, was Ezra lowering her to the bed roll and his soft lips, press to hers, gently, as he whispered.

"There is plenty of time for me to sleep, once your feeling better Darlin, you need rest more than I."

Ezra began to wonder if that was true though, he was beginning to feel the effects of not sleeping for the last several days. He felt very weak and his eyelids were heavy, he fought hard to stay awake, he was still worried about Laura, he knew her head injury was pretty bad. He fixed some beans and jerky for lunch, saving some for Laura when she woke, in case she was hungry, he hoped to try and get her home tomorrow, she would be much more comfortable there, in a soft bed and not on the hard ground, so her bruises could heal. He hoped she would be able to ride, if he put some sort of padding on her saddle, but it would be a slow ride and most likely take more than a day. If they got an early start, they could get pretty far, he wanted to get her off the hard ground as soon as possible, he knew it was adding to her pain. He watched her sleeping, she was so beautiful, her skin was not as red now, but still pretty bad, he saw a grimace of pain cross her face now and again, it hurt him to see that.

The next time Laura woke, it was late, the sun was setting over the horizon and it looked beautiful, painting the sky with a dozen different colors. She slowly looked around, she didn't see Ezra anywhere and she became worried, as tired as he was, something could have happened to him, "Ezra?" She said as loud as she could, nothing, "Ezra?" A little louder, she saw him come over a rise, moving quickly towards her, a look of concern on his handsome face.

"What's wrong Darlin? Are you all right?"

"Yes Ezra, I was worried about you, since you weren't here." He sat beside her and took her hand.

"I was procuring more water." He kissed the back of her hand and gazed deeply into her eyes.

Laura felt herself melting from his gaze, "I am sorry if I worried you." She was sitting up with the blanket under her for padding, Ezra reached over and caressed her cheek, she leaned into his touch and closed her eyes, she had never met a man that could be so gentle and tender, so she enjoyed every moment of it. Every time she looked into his eyes, she saw the affection he had for her, it gave her a warm feeling and she felt affection growing inside her, for him.

Ezra reveled in the softness of her skin, even though it was tight from the sunburn, it still felt so soft. When she leaned into his touch and closed her eyes, Ezra tipped his head and gently took her mouth, kissing her deeply and loving the feel of her responding to it. He tried to be gentle, as her lips were still very chapped, but his desire was making it hard. He took her face in both of his hands and began giving her light, little kisses, just feeling and tasting her, she tasted sweet, but there was also some blood, from the cracks on her lips, but he didn't mind that. He heard her moan, so he stopped kissing her, not sure if it was a moan of pain or pleasure. He looked into her eyes for a sign, he saw intense desire in them, they were a mirror image of his own, except the brown specks. "Laura....." He began to speak, but she put a trembling hand to his lips and shook her head.

"Don't say anything Ezra, just hold me, please?"

He reached out and took her hand, kissing her fingers, then pulled her into his arms, holding her gently as she laid her head on his shoulder and her hand on his chest. He held her until she feel asleep, then gently laid her down, he still had things to do if they were going to leave in the morning. He decided that, instead of Laura riding her own horse, he would carry her on his lap and pull her horse along behind. He felt she would be much more comfortable that way and she could sleep without fear of falling off her horse.

Laura woke in the morning to the smell of coffee, she *knew* Ezra had not slept that night, she was beginning to feel guilty about his lack of sleep, because of her. She sat up carefully, she was very stiff and sore, she saw Ezra putting his shave gear into his saddlebags, he must have just finished shaving. She thought about his face, how incredibly handsome he was and how soft and smooth his skin was, she could look at him forever. "Good morning Ezra." Her heart broke when he turned to look at her, despite the smile on his face, he looked more tired than ever. She got a tear in her eye that ran down her cheek, that must have scared Ezra, because he quickly moved to her and knelt down, taking her hand in his and wiping her tear away with his other hand.

"What's wrong Darlin?"

"Ezra, you look so tired, I feel so guilty that you aren't sleeping because of me, you are going to get sick."

"Oh Laura, no, don't worry about me, I am strong, losing a little sleep won't hurt me, I have done it before."

"I'm worried about you, I can see how exhausted you are." She reached up and touched his cheek, then gently ran a slender finger over the bag under his eye, "These bags tell me how tired you are and your eyes don't have the same sparkle in them, that they had the first time I looked into them."

"Please don't worry, I will be fine, as soon as I get you home, I will get some sleep."

"You promise?" He nodded and she leaned forward and kissed him, intending for it to be brief, but it lingered and became deeper, as they wrapped their arms around each other.

Ezra pulled away from Laura, they needed to get moving and he wanted another cup of coffee first, "Darlin, I need another cup of coffee, then we can start for your home." He saw the surprise on her face. "What is wrong Darlin?" He had not let go of her hand, so he squeezed it gently.

"I don't think I can ride yet, my bottom is badly bruised."

"Don't worry Darlin, I thought of that, you will ride on my lap, that should be comfortable enough." She hugged him and he held her in return.

"Thank you Ezra, it was so sweet of you to think of that."

"Your welcome Laura, now are you ready?"

"Yes, but I would like a cup of coffee as well." He smiled at her and got them both a cup of coffee.

Once they were ready to go, Ezra mounted Chaucer, then bent and gently grabbed Laura under her arms, easily lifting her onto his lap, setting her down gently, watching her wince in pain anyway. "I am sorry Darlin."

"It's all right Ezra, I am fine now." She closed her eyes as he kissed her nose.

"Are you ready for this? It might get pretty painful."

"Well, we have to do it sometime, we can't stay out here forever."

"You are incredibly brave Darlin, I truly admire your courage." Laura didn't say anything, he watched her face turn serious and a blush came to her cheeks, it was harder to see, because of her sunburn, but he saw it.

"Don't say that Ezra, it's not courage, it's just a need to get somewhere comfortable." She had a hard time taking compliments, especially from someone like Ezra.

"Call it what you will Laura, I call it courage." Again she didn't say anything, she just closed her eyes and laid her head against his shoulder. Ezra had given her his green jacket earlier, to protect her from the sun, now he removed his hat and put it on her head, so it shaded her face, but she was asleep already. He began riding, trying to take the least rocky path, it was a good thing that Laura had told him how to get to her home, while they drank their coffee. He had to admit, the feel of Laura resting in his arms, felt incredibly good, he could get used to that.

Laura had been embarrassed by Ezra's praise, she was not used to anyone telling her things like that, especially a handsome man like Ezra, so she hadn't known what to say. She had quickly grown sleepy and closed her eyes to go to sleep, the strength of Ezra's arms around her, made her feel safe and secure. She felt him place his hat on her head and the bright light of the sun was removed from her eyes, she was quickly asleep and dreaming of Ezra and the kisses they had shared, they had been so wonderful. She didn't know how long she had been asleep, but the sun was much higher in the sky, she reached up and removed the hat, so she could look at Ezra. "How long was I asleep?"

"About four hours, we are making good progress, how do you feel?"

"I'm in pain, but it's not too bad, you are making it so much easier." She smiled at him, it was the truth.

"Good Darlin, I am delighted, would you like to rest for a while?"

"No, I am fine, the sooner we get home, the better."

"All right, but let me know if you need a rest."

She smiled at him, she loved having her arms around him, feeling his strong muscles under her touch, his arms holding her, felt good too, it had been a very long time since she was held by a man, that was not a relative, so she enjoyed every moment of it.

Ezra continued to move the horse along, holding the reins loosely, but holding Laura tightly, wanting her to feel secure. Her horse's reins were tied to his saddle and it followed along beside them, Ezra had been admiring the beautiful horse, he liked Laura's taste in horses. His mind kept wandering and he knew it was from his exhaustion, it was beginning to have greater effect on him. At one point, Chaucer lost his footing and the sharp jolt sent a bolt of pain through Laura's body and she cried out, then began to cry into Ezra's shoulder. Ezra stopped the horse and brought his hands to her face, looking into her pain filled eyes as tears rolled down her cheeks, "I am so sorry Darlin, does it hurt bad?" Laura nodded, Ezra felt bad, it had only happened because his mind had wandered again, instead of paying attention to where they were going. He stroked her hair and gently caressed her back, until the tears subsided, then he brushed the remaining tears from her cheeks, "Do you want to stop for a while?"

"Yes please."

"Can you stand if I lower you down?" Laura nodded, so he lowered her from the horse as gently as he could, then dismounted, pulling the bed roll and blanket off with him. He spread out the bed roll and blanket, then helped her lay down so she was on her side.

Laura couldn't believe the pain she had felt, she couldn't prevent the cry of pain and the tears, it had been too much. When Ezra put his hands on her face and looked into her eyes, the concern on his face had been unmistakable, then he had begun to caress her back, which felt so good that she stopped crying. It had been rather painful when he lowered her from the horse, but now she was laying down on the bed roll, feeling much better, but very tired. She struggled to stay awake, they had been traveling most of the day, she knew they were only four or five hours from her home, but she didn't think she could go any farther now. She watched Ezra gathering wood for a fire, his movements sluggish, she knew his exhaustion was taking it's toll on him. She thought that Ezra must have decided to stop for the night, or he would not be bothering with a fire.

Ezra was moving slowly, he gathered wood for a fire, he decided to stop here for the night, Laura had been through enough for one day and that last incident had been the deciding factor. He hoped to sleep tonight, Laura should be all right if he did. He got the fire started and got comfortable on the ground, sitting near Laura, they ate dinner in silence, enjoying the quiet sunset. He suddenly felt Laura's hand cover his, he turned and looked at her, the glow of the setting sun sparkled in her eyes.

"Ezra, please hold me, the pain seems more bearable when your holding me."

"Certainly Darlin." He moved over and sat next to her, pulling her into his arms and stroking her hair, he thought about changing the bandage around her head, but he had nothing to replace it with.

"Ezra?"

"Hmmmmm?"

"Kiss me."

He looked down at her, she had desire in her eyes, along with the pain. He found that he would do anything for her, so he lowered his head, slowly covering her mouth with his, her lips were much softer now and did not bleed from his actions. He kissed her gently, just tasting her and reveling in the feelings that stirred inside him, he knew he was falling in love with her, he knew he shouldn't be, because as soon as she was well, he would be on his way back to Four Corners and might never see her again.

Laura loved how Ezra's kiss made her feel, she was definitely falling in love with him, she could not bare the thought of him not being in her life, she was strongly considering going with him to Four Corners. She had been involved with several men in the past, but none of them came close to making her feel the way Ezra did, she felt his love and tenderness flow into her through his kiss. It was the most wonderful feeling she ever felt, he deepened the kiss, gently pushing his tongue into her mouth, the feel of him exploring her mouth, was amazing. She felt her heart swell as Ezra continued to kiss her and touch her, he stirred desires in her that had been dormant for a long time. She finally ended the kiss, it was time to tell him how she felt, "Ezra, I have fallen in love with you, you are the most incredible man I have ever met."

"Laura, my sweet Laura, I too have fallen in love with you, but what will come of it? I will be going back to Four Corners soon, then I won't see you again."

"I have been thinking about that, I want to go with you."

"Really? You would do that?" He looked into her eyes and stroked her cheek, he could see she was quite serious.

"Yes, anything to be with you"

"I do love you Laura" He kissed her again, this time it was deeper and more passionate, he felt her succumb to him, letting him kiss her the way he wanted. He was so happy, she was in love with him and was willing to go with him to Four Corners. This made him kiss her with more passion than ever, he enjoyed these feelings, he hadn't experienced them in a long time. He stopped kissing her, they were both breathless, plus the fire was going out. He picked up a piece of wood and threw it into the fire, then turned his attention back to the angel in his arms, kissing the top of her head, "You should get some sleep now Darlin."

"So should you Ezra."

"I will Darlin, soon." He felt her leave his embrace, it made him feel suddenly alone, he watched her lay down on the bed roll, on her side, then she motioned for him to lay next to her. He turned and sat next to her, pulling one knee up to his chest and rested his arm on it, looking down at her. "You go to sleep Laura, I will try to sleep shortly."

"Please Ezra? You need to sleep, I can see how exhausted you are."

He reached over and caressed her cheek with the back of his hand, "Don't worry about me Darlin, I will sleep." He felt her kiss his hand, then she laid her head down and was asleep in minutes. Ezra sat staring into the fire, his mind going off in several directions, just thinking about how everything had changed in his life, over the last few days, was staggering. He eventually laid down and tried to sleep, but for some reason even as exhausted as he was, he could not sleep.

Laura woke several times during the night, when the pain got unbearable and she had to change positions, each time she woke, Ezra was awake, he was not sleeping. She was becoming very concerned about him and feared for his health, she loved him and did not want anything to happen to him. She did not say anything to him then, but she would in the morning, she drifted back to sleep, her dreams were of her possible future with Ezra, at least what she wanted it to be, warm, happy, and loving, she didn't want the dreams to end, they helped ease her pain. When she woke in the morning, Ezra was already up with coffee brewing, she knew he hadn't gotten any sleep. "Ezra, I know you didn't sleep last night, why?"

"I honestly don't know Darlin, I did try." He smiled wearily at her, feeling so tired.

"I am worried about you, I love you and don't want you getting sick." She watched him carefully, his actions slow.

"I know Darlin and I am sorry, but I just couldn't sleep."

She looked into his eyes, they were dull and listless and she missed the sparkle and life they had when she first looked into them, she wanted it back.

Ezra could see the concern on Laura's beautiful face, he hated to see her worried, especially about him, but he didn't know what to do, he just couldn't sleep. He hoped that once he got her home and she was safe and comfortable, he would be able to sleep. He had fixed some coffee and was drinking his second cup, adding some of the ingredients of his flask to it, but he still felt so tired and weak, he hoped that he could keep his strength up long enough to get her home. He watched Laura as she tried to get comfortable, he felt bad for her, to be in that much pain and that uncomfortable, it had to be frustrating. He couldn't believe the way he felt inside for her, the kinds of feelings she stirred in him were so different from any he had felt for other women, he did not want to lose her. As he fixed some breakfast, he asked Laura a question, "Do you think you are up to continuing this fine morning?"

"Yes Ezra, we should reach the ranch by early afternoon, then we can have a decent lunch and you can get some sleep." She was almost ready to hit him over the head, to make him sleep.

"That sounds wonderful, shall we?" He put the utensils away and prepared to depart, after Laura nodded her approval. He put the fire out and took Laura's hand, guiding her to his horse, she was much more stable on her feet today. He mounted Chaucer and reached down to gently lift Laura onto his lap, a small wave of dizziness washed over him, but he pushed it away, it was just the exhaustion. He settled her on his lap, holding her tight and giving her a small, but deep kiss, before he urged Chaucer into motion.

They made good progress, the ride was smooth, Laura was comfortable, and they talked as they rode, learning more about each other and their lives. They reached her home by early afternoon, Ezra was impressed, it was a huge ranch and obviously quite successful. Laura was right, there was no one else there, the place was completely empty.

Laura had never been so happy to see her home, it was a sight for sore eyes. She let Ezra lower her from the horse, then steadied him as he dismounted. He swayed and she took hold of him and held him. "Ezra, are you all right?"

"Yes Darlin, I am fine." He smiled at her and held her tight.

Laura could see he wasn't all right though, "Lets get you inside, you can have something to eat, then lay down in one of the bedrooms and sleep." She guided him towards the front door of the large, expensive ranch house.

"Sounds good to me Darlin."

Laura opened the door and they stepped into the living room, "Why don't you sit down, I want to change into something clean and more comfortable, then I can fix us some lunch."

"Very well Darlin."

She went to her room to put on her house dress and a robe, it felt so much more comfortable. She then went back out to the living room, gasping when she got there, Ezra was laying motionless on the floor.

Ezra had started for one of the elegant chairs that filled the living room, but his knees gave out and blackness took over his mind, he felt himself hit the floor, it was the last thing he was aware of, then nothing. His mind fell into a deep sleep, a kind of unconsciousness, his body refusing to work any longer, it was too weak and tired. He knew his lack of sleep would catch up to him, but he hadn't thought this would happen. So when his mind drifted into unconsciousness and he became unaware of everything around him, there was no preventing it. His last thought was of Laura and who would take care of her.

Laura moved as quickly as she could to Ezra, kneeling down to turn him over and placed her fingers against his soft neck, feeling for a pulse, it was there, a little weak, but steady. His breathing was low and also steady, he was unconscious, but otherwise seemed fine. She couldn't leave him on the floor, but she didn't know how to get him to a bed, she didn't think she had the strength to move him, she had to try. She gave him a gentle kiss, then took him under the arms and began to drag him across the floor towards her room, it was the closest room with a bed. "I will try not to hurt you, my darling Ezra." It took her some time, but she got him to her room, the hard part now, would be lifting him onto the bed. She placed him so that he was propped against the side of the bed, she rested a few moments before attempting to lift him onto the bed, granted he wasn't all that heavy, but she was in a weakened state and everything she did hurt. She finally felt ready to try, she got behind him and grabbed him under the arms again, then stood and fell back onto the bed, Ezra landed on top of her, which sent waves of pain through her bruised body. She rolled over, bringing Ezra with her, so that he was now on his side, on the bed. She laid there with him in her arms, the pain that all this had caused had been tremendous, so she couldn't move. She wound up falling asleep there, the energy it took to get Ezra into her room and onto the bed, had exhausted her.

She woke a few hours later, nothing had changed with Ezra, so she got up and took Ezra's boots, jacket, and guns off, so he would be more comfortable, putting a blanket over him, caressing his cheek and brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. She then went and fixed some lunch, she was starving and needed to keep her strength up, so she could return the favor and take care of Ezra now, the way he had taken care of her. She also took a long, hot bath, checking Ezra again when she finished, still no change, she didn't think there would be, not for a while, he had been so exhausted. She kissed him gently, leaving him to sleep while she checked the house and grounds, to be sure everything on the ranch was all right, she didn't know when everyone would be back from the cattle drive, but she knew it would be a while, at least another week. That night she laid back down next to Ezra, taking him in her arms and falling asleep with him, hoping he would be all right.

When Laura woke in the morning, Ezra was still unconscious, she hadn't expected him to be awake, but she had hoped he wouldn't be as far down into unconsciousness as he had been. If he didn't wake soon, she would begin to really worry, she knew he needed a lot of sleep, but there was such a thing as too much. She went and took a hot bath, the heat soothed her bruised, aching body, she enjoyed it and was in no hurry to get out, there was no reason to be. After a while, she got out and dried off, putting on loose fitting clothes, it was all that felt comfortable, then went back into the bedroom to check on Ezra again. He looked so helpless and innocent laying there, she really loved him and she could never repay him for saving her life, she knew her love for him was more than just gratitude, it was genuine.

She went about her chores, maintaining the ranch the best she could, having to stop and rest now and again, as she didn't have all her strength back and it gave her the opportunity to check on Ezra. There was no change in his condition the rest of that day, she was getting worried, what if, for some reason, he never woke up? She would not be able to bare that, so now she prayed for him to wake, caressing his face and kissing him gently, "Please wake up Ezra, I am worried about you, please?" She whispered in his ear. That night as she got into bed next to him, she heard him moan, but he did not stir, she didn't know what that meant, but she hoped it was a good sign. She gave him a goodnight kiss, letting it linger and feeling the whiskers that had grown on his face, if he did not wake by morning, she would have to try and shave him, she knew how much he hated to be unshaven. She moved close to him, wrapping her arm around him and holding him, then fell asleep, again dreaming of her life with Ezra.

Ezra woke briefly during the night, but his body and mind protested, so he was quickly back to a very deep sleep. He did not even register Laura next to him, with her arm around him. His mind was still in a state of exhaustion, he had gone without sleep for at least five days, so it was taking time for him to recover. The only thing he was conscious of when he woke, was that it was dark and he should be asleep anyway. Now however, he was dreaming, they were about the events of the last week, starting with finding Laura, the terror that went through him at seeing her down in that ravine, then to his attempts to take care of her, and his falling in love with her. It was a good dream, but it ended all too soon, as he slipped into a deeper, dreamless sleep.

Ezra woke in the morning, he groaned and opened his eyes, squinting against the light shining through the window, his head hurt. He could not remember having that bad a headache in a while, his stomach felt queasy too. He then registered the fact that Laura was laying next to him with her arm around him, he panicked at first, worried about her, then he realized that she was just sleeping. She looked so beautiful, he could get used to waking up next to her every morning for the rest of his life. He rolled onto his side and took her in his arms, closing his eyes again as the light in the room just made his head hurt more, he kissed Laura on the cheek and enjoyed the happy feelings he had right now. It had been so long since he felt truly happy, now Laura made him feel that way, just by her presence and he knew he loved her deeply, he couldn't wait to take her back to Four Corners with him.

Laura woke to find herself in Ezra's arms, which meant he must have wakened at some point, but he appeared to be asleep now. She tried to move, but Ezra held her tighter, then whispered in her ear.

"Good morning Darlin, how are you feeling?"

She was startled briefly, she did not think he was awake, "I am fine, how are you? I was getting worried, you were in such a deep sleep for so long."

"I am all right Darlin, I have quite the headache, but I am fine."

"Oh Ezra, I am sorry, roll onto your back and let me massage your temples a bit." She watched Ezra roll onto his back, a groan escaping his lips, then she moved onto his chest and began to massage his temples, watching his eyes close and a smile cross his handsome face. She felt him bring his arm around her, then brought his other hand to her face, caressing it lightly, moving down to her neck, pulling her down to kiss him. It was the most heated, urgent kiss she had ever had, he kissed her deeply and passionately. She let the moan of pleasure escape her lips, the kiss was so intense she forgot

about rubbing his temples, instead moving her hands into his soft hair, their mouths melded into one, her body felt like it would burst into flames from the passion in the kiss.

Ezra held Laura tighter, wanting to feel her soft body against his, he wanted more than just to kiss her, but he knew neither of them were physically ready, she still had bad bruises and his head was pounding, he felt certain that they would be together before they left there, it was something he desperately wanted. He was kissing her with such passion and urgency, it had been too long since he felt like this, so he wanted to enjoy every second. He made the kiss deeper still, their tongues doing a dance of intense passion, he began to feel like his body was on fire, their passion and desire was so intense. He finally stopped, much to Laura's disappointment, "Laura......"

"Shhhh......Ezra, don't say anything please? Just hold me." He held her tighter and they fell back to sleep again.

Laura woke again a few hours later, she was still in Ezra's arms, it felt so good and she found herself wanting to make love to him very much, she hoped he wanted that too. She kissed him deeply, causing him to wake, she looked into his eyes and saw the same desire in his sparkling green depths, that was in her own green eyes. She kissed him deeper, letting her desire flow out into the kiss, making it more urgent, more desperate. She had never wanted anything more than she wanted this, the anticipation of sharing herself with him was intense, she knew it would be wonderful.

Ezra was stunned by the desire and passion in Laura's eyes, they were so much like his own, except those brown specks, which he found so beautiful. He was so in love with Laura and he wanted to show her just how much, joining his body and soul with hers. Her kiss was urgent and he could not hold back, he began caressing her, feeling her in his arms. They made love the rest of that afternoon, then shared a romantic, candlelight dinner, feeding each other and kissing. Ezra could not kiss her enough, her lips were full and soft and she tasted so sweet. He knew their lives in Four Corners would be perfect, nothing could destroy the kind of love they shared, it was stronger than anything else, or so he thought.

Laura had been amazed by their love making, it made her love him more, knowing they had been completely one, body and soul, her soul had never felt so full of love, as when they made love. It had been an incredible afternoon, now she was enjoying an incredibly romantic evening, candlelight, wine, and Ezra. His kisses took her breath away every time, she loved kissing him and couldn't wait for their lives to begin in Four Corners. She knew it would be wonderful, she loved him so much that she knew they could get through anything, or so she thought. She had gotten a telegram earlier in the day, after she and Ezra made love, it had notified her that the family would be home tomorrow, but there was tragic news. She figured that they had just lost a lot of cattle on the drive or something like that, if only she knew the real tragedy, she would find out tomorrow.

Ezra and Laura spent the evening in front of the fire sipping brandy, holding each other, and kissing. They were both happier than they had ever been, it was the most wonderful evening either of them had in a long time. The way Ezra was kissing her was intense, starting out so tender and gentle, then growing into urgent and passionate, they could not get enough of each other. "Laura, I love you so much, I have never loved anyone the way I love you."

"Ezra, I feel the same way, my heart has never been so full of love." He kissed her again, the desire and want in it was intense, so they withdrew to her room and made love again.

Ezra was feeling so alive and couldn't wait to introduce everyone back in Four Corners, to his beautiful Laura. They fell asleep in each others arms, both dreaming of their lives together, basking in the warmth of each others arms.

In the morning, Laura got up and fixed breakfast, happy at the thought of doing that for Ezra every morning for the rest of her life. Once breakfast was finished, she began to prepare a large lunch, knowing that when the family got home, they would be very hungry. Ezra was outside tending his horse, they would leave for Four Corners in the morning and he wanted the horses to be ready. She watched him out the window for a moment, he was tending her horse, Chance right now. She watched the way he moved, it was incredibly sexy, especially that gun belt, slung so low on those beautiful hips, she didn't think she could possibly love anyone more. She could not wait for tomorrow, they would be on their way to Four Corners, where she would start her new life. A few hours later, her family arrived home, but there were two people missing, her two brothers weren't there, she was puzzled, why would they not be with her parents?

Ezra spent a couple of hours tending his horse, as well as Laura's, he could not wait to take her to Four Corners, his life would be so much happier with her in it. He had been amazed at the love he had for her and he knew she loved him just as much, so he could not wait for tomorrow to get here. He was in the living room when her family arrived, he saw the look on Laura's face and wondered what was wrong, "Laura, what's wrong Darlin?"

"Well, maybe nothing, it's just that my two brothers are not with my parents, I can't imagine why." She had a bad feeling in her stomach.

"Perhaps they had business to take care of." Ezra knew she was worried and tried to reassure her.

"Yes, that does make sense, thank you Ezra."

"Your welcome Darlin." He kissed her deeply before she went out the door to greet them. He watched through the window as she greeted them, his heart began to sink as he watched her fall into her mother's embrace, the tears evident on her face, it was then that he knew what the tragic news was, something had happened to her brothers. He stayed in the living room, not wanting to intrude, and waited for them to come in, he hoped this wouldn't change their plans, but knew it could. He watched Laura outside, it broke his heart to see her in so much emotional distress.

Laura was devastated when her parents told her that her two brothers had been killed in a stampede, she had fallen into her mothers embrace and sobbed uncontrollably, she loved her brothers and didn't know what she would do without them. She tried to compose herself, then began to tell her parents about Ezra, how much she loved him and that she wanted to go with him to Four Corners, she saw the disapproval in their eyes, a look of suspicion in her fathers eyes.

"He's a gambler Laura, you can't trust him, he no doubt wants your money."

"Father, that is not true, he loves me, I can see it in his eyes, besides he saved my life and took care of me." She looked at her parents, trying to make them understand.

"What do you mean? He saved your life?" Her mother was worried now, what had happened while they were gone?

"He did, see Chance got spooked by a snake and threw me down into a ravine, Ezra climbed down and got me out, look you can still see all my bruises." She lifted her shirt to show them her back.

"Well, in that case we are very grateful to Mr. Standish, we could not bare to lose you too." Her father was grateful, but he was still somewhat suspicious of the man.

Laura led them to the house, her tears flowing freely again, it struck her on the way to the house that she would not be able to go with Ezra, with her brothers gone, she would be needed there, that thought made her cry harder and as soon as she got inside, she ran into Ezra's arms and buried her face in his chest, sobbing.

Ezra held Laura tight as she cried, caressing her short hair, letting her parents fill him in on what happened. The first contact with her parents was very awkward, but he introduced himself, shaking her fathers hand and smiling at her mother, who thought he was quite handsome.

"I do believe we owe you a debt of gratitude Mr. Standish, if not for you we would have lost all our children." Her father commented.

"You fine folks don't owe me anything, I love Laura and that's enough, I am truly sorry for your lose." He continued to hold Laura tight.

"Thank you Mr. Standish, now if you don't mind, my wife and I would like to freshen up."

"Certainly, I will take care of Laura." He kissed her on the head, feeling her continue to sob.

"We know you will, thank you again." They walked away, heading to their bedroom, to clean up and get into fresh clothes.

Ezra pulled Laura over to a chair, sitting down and holding her in his lap, letting her cry, "Ezra....I....can't go with you.....to Four Corners."

"I know Darlin, it breaks my heart to see you like this." Her words tore his heart in two, he wanted her with him. "I can't believe this is happening Darlin, I don't know what I will do without you."

"I don't want......to lose you.......Ezra.....but there is.....no choice now." She buried her face in his neck and cried, she wanted to go back in time to last night and have it never end.

"Shhhh, Darlin lets just remember the time we did have together." He held her tighter, wanting to believe that if he held her tight enough, all this would go away and they could be together.

Laura felt like her heart had been torn to shreds and ripped from her body, to lose her brothers and the man she loved more than anything, all at once was more than she could take. She passed out in Ezra's arms, she could not comprehend all of it, it was too much to deal with. She was vaguely aware of Ezra picking her up, then she felt her bed under her, Ezra's soft touch on her face helped soothe her and she dropped into a deep sleep, letting the darkness soothe her broken soul.

Ezra spent the evening with Laura's parents, she slept through the night. He liked her parents and they seemed to like him, they regretted that Laura could not accompany him to Four Corners, but perhaps once things settled down and they could hire more help, she could join him. They had seen how much he loved Laura and did not want to deny her the happiness she deserved. Ezra went to bed that night with a heavy heart, his soul felt suddenly empty and cold, he didn't know how he would go on without her, he needed her. He had stopped at her room before going to a guest room, he sat next to her on the bed, taking in her beautiful face, caressing her cheek, and kissing her softly. He felt the tears in his own eyes, but didn't bother to fight them.

Laura woke in the morning feeling more despair than she ever had in her whole life. Her mother had a big breakfast prepared for Ezra's departure, but neither of them could eat. She saw the concern in her parents eyes as they looked at her and Ezra. Her mother had also prepared enough food for the two day ride to Four Corners, for Ezra. He had thanked her and went out to prepare Chaucer, Laura walked out and asked, "Can I ride with you to the gate of the ranch?"

"Certainly Darlin." He helped her onto Chaucer behind him.

Laura put her arms around his waist and held him tightly, never wanting to let go, she rested her head on his back and began to cry, he felt so good in her arms.

Ezra reveled in the feel of Laura's arms around him, knowing it would be the last time he felt her. They reached the gate at the beginning of the ranch, he stopped Chaucer under a tree and they dismounted. Laura was immediately in his arms and he held her like there was no tomorrow, which for them there wasn't. He put his hand under her chin and lifted her face to look into her eyes, then began kissing her, he had desperation and despair in his kiss, he tasted all of her and continued to kiss her for a long time, as they finally stopped, Laura whispered to him.

"Make love to me one last time, please?" She felt him capture her mouth with great passion and urgency.

Ezra lowered her to the grass and made love to her once more, the pain and pleasure in their hearts making it more intense than ever. As Ezra mounted Chaucer and turned to ride away, he turned back to Laura, "You will forever be in my heart Laura, I love you."

"I will love you forever Ezra, perhaps we will be together one day."

Ezra tipped his hat to her and rode away, not looking back, that would hurt too much, he knew she was watching him ride away, with tears running down her beautiful face.

Laura watched Ezra ride away, watching the love of her life, ride away. She knew in her heart she would never see him again, she hoped it wasn't true, but she was so full of despair right now that she couldn't think that far ahead. She slowly walked back towards the house, letting the tears spill down her face. She kept remembering the way he had just made love to her, it had been so sweet and gentle, she cried harder, unable to believe she was losing him, just yesterday they had been so happy, making plans for their life in Four Corners, now it was all gone and she felt hollow and empty inside.

Ezra rode into Four Corners two days later, his shoulders were slumped and his head was down, the other six men watched as he passed them by, they looked concerned, they thought he would come back from his little trip refreshed and happy, but he looked like someone had died. Ezra took Chaucer to the livery and began to brush him down, he felt the sorrow and weariness in his bones and just wanted to go to his room and drown his sorrows. He leaned against Chaucer and stroked his velvety nose, "Well, my old friend, at least you have never broken my heart, I'd be lost without you." Chaucer whinnied softly at his masters sad voice, the tears came to Ezra again and he didn't stop them........
