A LOVE REBORN

It was nearly six months since he had left Laura behind at her ranch, he was just beginning to forget about her, she still filled his heart, but he had to let go of her.  He had sent her a letter a few weeks after returning to Four Corners, but had not received a response from her; he knew she loved him so he wasn't sure why she hadn't written back.  As time passed his pain diminished, he was so grateful to Buck and Josiah, they had given him support, advice, and they listened.  He could never repay them for their help to get through the loss of Laura, all of the others had showed their support as well, but Buck and Josiah had provided the most.

He vividly remembered the day he arrived back in Four Corners, Josiah had come into the livery to check on him, finding him crying.  Poor Josiah had been so worried, since it wasn't like Ezra to be emotional, but he could not help himself, he'd never loved anyone like he loved Laura and she was gone from his life.  Josiah had moved to him and placed his hands on his shoulders, asking him to tell Josiah what was wrong.  Ezra had tried to compose himself and tell Josiah all about Laura, the tears coming to him again, Josiah hugged him tight and they went to the church together, where they talked for several hours.  Ezra had felt better after that, but the deep pain and emptiness he felt was still there, embedded deep in his heart and soul.

Now, six months later, he was putting her behind him and getting on with his life, returning to his cheerful self, winning all the money his associates had to offer.  He was happy and content again, only at night did his longing for Laura resurface, but he could usually push it away and dream happier dreams.  The young and enthusiastic Mr. Dunne interrupted his thoughts.

"Hey Ezra, the stage is coming in, want to join me to see who comes into town?  Might be someone for you to play poker with."  JD loved it when new people came to town and he also wanted to give Ezra something to do, he could tell he was thinking about Laura again.

"Certainly Mr. Dunne, I could use the distraction."  He stood and walked through the bat wing doors behind JD, squinting at the bright afternoon sun as he put his hat on and adjusted his gun belt.

They watched as the Stage rolled to a stop in front of the hotel, it appeared that there was only three people on the stage, two women and a man, but from here they couldn't tell who they were.  JD began to move towards the coach, ready to offer assistance, but Ezra stayed where he was, not wanting to go into the hot sun.  He watched as the gentleman got out of the stage, reaching up for the bags as the driver handed them down.  JD moved to help the first lady out of the coach, taking her hand and helping her down, he could hear JD speaking.

"Welcome to Four Corners, my names JD, JD Dunne, I am the sheriff here, are you folks staying a while?"  He shook the gentleman's hand as he spoke.

"No, we are just passing through, I believe the other young lady is staying though, says the man she loves lives here."  The gentleman turned and took the other ladies bags from the driver, "Thank you driver."

JD moved to assist the other lady, but she had not moved to get out yet, so he looked closer at her and realized that the heat must be getting to her, she looked flushed and weak.  "Are you all right Miss?"  He saw her nod then she sat forward.

That was when Ezra caught sight of her and he was moving quickly to the stage, "LAURA" He hollered as he ran, this was too good to be true, but what was she doing here?  It was only when he reached the stage that he stopped in his tracks, his eyes going wide as JD assisted her from the stage.  It was quite obvious that Laura was with child, most likely his child, he was stunned, but recovered quickly when he saw that she looked ill.  "My Darlin Laura, are you all right?  Come, let me assist you to the hotel, you can get a nice, cold glass of lemonade."  He was still shocked over her condition, why hadn't she written to him and told him about this?

Ezra gently guided Laura to the hotel, still stunned and unable to ask her what was going on, he carefully helped her sit in a chair in the lobby, turning to JD, who had followed behind with Laura's bags, "Mr. Dunne, would you be so kind as to acquire a cold glass of lemonade and a cool cloth."

"Um....Sure Ezra, be right back."  JD headed for the restaurant, asking the waiter to bring him the items Ezra wanted.

"Laura Darlin, what are you doing here?  And more importantly, is the child you are carrying mine?" He sat next to her and held her hand, God he had missed her terribly.

"My parents sent me here, it's too dangerous for me to remain at the ranch, especially in my condition and yes Ezra, this baby is yours, I haven't been with anyone else."  She caressed her swollen belly, it filled her heart with love and pride that she was carrying Ezra's baby.

"Why didn't you respond to my letter?  Why didn't you write me about our baby?"  He couldn't take his eyes off her beautiful face, she had been so beautiful before, but the pregnancy made her even more beautiful, even though she seemed overheated right now.

"I tried Ezra, but things are very bad at the ranch, none of my mail was getting out, it's a very long story Ezra and I don't think I am up for it right now."  She looked at JD as he came back with the lemonade and cloth; he was a nice young man.

"Here Ezra."  He handed Ezra the cloth and glass, looking at Laura the whole time, she was a beautiful woman and the fact that she was with child was a bit of a shock, since he knew it had to be Ezra's.  "You feeling better Miss?"

"Yes, thank you, please call me Laura." She sipped at the lemonade as Ezra wiped the cool cloth over her neck and face, he was very good at that now and his touch aroused her desires and her love for Ezra.  "Ezra, can I get a room, I need to lay down for a while."

"Certainly Darlin, I will take care of everything."  He stood and headed for the front desk, quickly acquiring a room and moving back to where Laura sat, "JD, could you carry Laura's bags please? While I help her up the stairs?"

"Sure Ezra, it really is nice to meet you Laura, Ezra told us so much about you, he sure does love you."

"Thank you Mr. Dunne, it is nice to meet one of his friends."  She smiled wearily, she was very tired and the heat of the ride had really affected her.

"Call me JD, I will leave you now to get some rest."  He set her bags down and tipped his hat, closing the door behind him.  He made his way to the saloon, he needed to tell the others about this, it was good that Laura was back in Ezra's life, but was it good that she was carrying his child? How would that affect him?

Ezra helped Laura lay down, it was difficult with her large stomach, he then sat next to her on the bed and caressed her cheek with the back of his hand, her skin was so soft and he never wanted to stop looking at her.  "Darlin, I can't tell you how happy I am that you've come back into my life, I missed you terribly."

“I missed you Ezra, the minute I found out that I was with child, I wanted to crawl here to tell you, but everything back at home is a mess Ezra, I can't talk about it now, I need to take a nap."  She took his hand and moved it to her stomach, letting him feel the child growing inside her.

"Very well, I will leave you to get some sleep, I love you and I am thrilled that you are carrying my child, I've always wanted children."  He gently caressed her belly with his hand, bending to kiss her, letting it linger longer than he had intended, but he had missed her kiss so very much.  Once she was asleep, he left her room, looking at her for a moment before closing the door behind him; there were plans to be made.

JD strode into the saloon and headed for the table where the rest of the seven sat sipping beer and talking casually.  He saw them all look up at him as he approached the table, their faces turning to looks of concern.  JD wasn't sure what expression he held on his face, he was happy for Ezra, but stunned by Laura's presence and her condition, the thought of Ezra being a father had him stunned too, not that he wouldn't be a great one, but just that he was going to be one.

"Hey JD, what's up?  You look like you've seen a ghost."  Buck commented.

"You guys won't believe who just came in on the stage."  He sat down heavily next to Buck.

"Probably not, so just tell us JD." Chris hated guessing games.

"Laura, Ezra's Laura and she is with child."  He still couldn't believe it.

"With child?" Nathan asked, that was not something he would have expected, he knew Ezra had probably made love to Laura, but he still hadn't expected that.

"Yeah, she's pretty far along, but the hot ride on the stage seemed to have made her a bit ill."  JD looked to Nathan, knowing he would probably want to check her.

"Why is she here?" Vin asked.

"I don't know, something about it not being safe for her to be at home, but she was not feeling well and didn't go into detail."  JD was just about to burst, the shock of seeing Laura and that she was carrying Ezra's baby was wearing off and now he was excited about the prospect of a baby in their midst.

Ezra had gone immediately to the General Store, he wasn't that pleased with their selection, but he found one of the rings that would do, he would get her something much better later.  He then went to the telegraph office and sent a telegram to Judge Travis, then went to the bank to see what homes might be available in town for purchase.  He was so excited about the thought of starting a family with Laura and wanted everything to be perfect, he wanted to marry her before the baby was born and he wanted a home for them right away.  He left the bank and headed for the Hotel, he needed to talk to Laura, he had to tell her how much he loved her and wanted her to be his wife, how happy he was that she was carrying his baby.

Laura woke slowly, she still felt weak and ached a bit, but the thought of being with Ezra again made all that disappear. She sat up carefully, putting her hand on her belly, reaching behind her and putting the pillows against the headboard, so she could lean back.  She wished Ezra were here now, she had felt so poorly earlier that she really hadn't been able to talk to him, she wanted to now.  She closed her eyes for a moment, as the baby moved inside her, then she heard a soft knock at the door and Ezra's voice on the other side.  "Come in Ezra, I'm not asleep.”

"How are you feeling Darlin?"  He closed the door behind him and moved to sit on the edge of the bed next to her, she was so beautiful.

"I feel much better Ezra, thank you, listen Ezra, I need to tell you some things and I need you to promise not to say anything until I am finished."  She smiled at him, that face of his had been in her dreams every night since he left.

"Certainly Darlin, as long as you will return the favor."  He took her hand and held it, his eyes never leaving hers.

"First, I love you with all my heart and I am so happy to be carrying your baby, second, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but I do understand if that isn't something you want, I can live with that, lastly, whatever happens, you have my parents blessing, they were not happy that I was pregnant and unwed, but they like you and know you will do the right thing, ok, your turn now."  She squeezed his hand and a tear rolled down her cheek.

Ezra wiped the tear from her cheek and leaned in to kiss her, gently tasting her lips, then sat back again, "Laura, I love you with all my heart, I want to make a family with you and I want to give you everything your heart desires, I would never dream of turning you away, I want you to be my wife, more than anything."  He pulled the ring from his pocket, "It's not the quality that I would like for you, but I will give you a better one as soon as I can order it."  He took her hand and slid the ring down her finger, "Laura, my love, will you marry me?"  He put his hand on her belly, feeling the baby move under his touch; it caused a tear to roll down his cheek.

"Oh yes Ezra, of course I will marry you, but where will we live?"  She caressed his cheek with her hand, brushing his tear away with her thumb.

"I have inquired about the purchase of a residence here in town, so we will have a home in which to raise our child together."  He leaned in and kissed her again, deeper this time, feeling Laura's right hand come around his neck, her left covering his hand that rested on her belly.

Ezra stopped kissing Laura, as much as he loved it, he needed to talk to her about things, including her health and what was going on at her ranch.  He caressed her cheek and looked into her eyes, searching for any sign of pain.  "Laura, how have you been?  I take it that you and the baby are both healthy, I want you to have the best of care."

"Yes, Ezra, we are both fine, this little baby is quite active, it kicks a lot, which isn't surprising, since both of it's parents are stubborn, determined people." She smiled at Ezra, it touched her that he was so concerned about her and the baby, it was obvious that he was thrilled about the baby.

"That is good to hear, I would like my associate and resident healer, Mr. Jackson, to have a look at you, I was quite worried about you earlier."  He had been terrified by her ill appearance, he did not want to lose her or the baby.

"That's fine Ezra, I don't mind, but I feel fine, I just got over heated on the ride."  She reached up and caressed his cheek, he was the most caring man she'd ever met.

"Do you think you will be up for the Independence Day celebration tomorrow?"

"Oh yes, I am fine Ezra really, a good nights sleep and I will be as good as new." She loved the Independence Day celebrations, they were usually fun and she knew that she would get a chance to meet all of Ezra's friends.

"That's wonderful, I will escort you to the picnic and we can watch the fireworks together, I understand the fireworks this year will be quite spectacular, as the town has purchased them from the Chinese railroaders."  He moved to get up, but felt Laura's hand on his arm.

"Ezra, I have missed you so much, not a day went by that I didn't think about you."  A tear rolled down her cheek, this being pregnant sure messed up her emotions.

"Oh Laura, I missed you terribly, I am so very happy to have you here and I can't wait for you to meet my compatriots tomorrow."  He kissed her, wrapping her gently in his arms, it felt so good to hold her again.

"Ezra..... I want to make love to you."  She desperately wanted that, she had missed him and she knew it would not harm the baby any.

"Darlin, is that wise in your condition?" He wanted to, but he would not risk harming the baby in any way.

"Oh yes, my doctor told me it was fine, that was before I left the ranch."  She kissed him again, as Ezra moved beside her on the bed and they made slow, gentle love.  Laura had forgotten how wonderful it was and how much love she felt when they were together, now she could make love to him whenever she wanted.

Ezra held Laura in his arms, both enjoying each other, the lovemaking had been wonderful and he loved her more than ever.  "Darlin, tell me what's going on at home."

"Oh Ezra, it's awful really, there is a powerful rancher, he wants our ranch, but doesn't seem to think he should pay for it, he's been terrorizing us for month's now, actually it all started about a week after you left, I got your beautiful letter, but then I couldn't get one back out to you."  She held him tighter, never wanting to leave his arms.

"Who is this man?  And what has he been doing to you?"  Ezra had genuine concern etched on his face now, Laura could have been killed and her parents still could be.

"I think my father said his name was Royal, or something like that, he's had his men patrolling around our property, not letting anyone or anything in or out, he tried to poison our cattle, but father managed to stop that before it was too late, they also set fire to the brush, but we also managed to get that out, my father decided it was too dangerous for me to remain there, especially now."  She put her hand on her belly again, feeling Ezra's hand on hers.

            "Royal, Guy Royal?"

"Yeah, I am pretty sure that was the name."  She looked at Ezra puzzled, how did he know the man’s name.

"That man has been a thorn in this towns side, he tried to burn the town down, so he could have his ranchers take over, I need to let Mr. Larabee know about this."  He sat up, putting his clothes back on, then kissed Laura and got off the bed.

"Ezra, please don't do anything foolish."  She was worried about what he would do.

"Don't worry Darlin, I am not leaving you for anything, but Mr. Larabee may want to do something about this, you get some rest and I shall return shortly."  He put his hat on and opened the door.

            "I love you Ezra."

"I love you Laura." He closed the door behind him and made his way down the stairs, he needed to find Chris and the others, they needed to know about that miscreant Royal's latest misdeeds.

It was Independence Day and Ezra was happier than he had ever been, he had spoken to the others last night about Guy Royal and the trouble he was causing Laura's parents.  It had been decided that Chris, Vin, Buck and JD, would all head out to her parents ranch, after today's festivities, to see if they could help Laura's folks get ride of the loathsome Royal.  Ezra, Nathan, and Josiah were to stay in town, Ezra so he could be with Laura, Nathan so he could tend to Laura if need be, and Josiah so he could get the church fixed up for the impending nuptials.

Laura decided to wear her prettiest dress for today, which just happened to be red, white, and blue.  She knew that she would be meeting all of Ezra's friends and wanted to look her best.  She was so happy, Ezra had asked for her hand and she had agreed, that had been her biggest fear, that he would not want to get married.  She couldn't wait to watch the fireworks tonight in his arms, she always felt so safe and happy in his arms and watching the fireworks would be magical.

Ezra knocked on Laura's door, waiting to escort his beautiful bride to the picnic, he couldn't wait to introduce her to everyone, she was his pride and joy.  When the door opened, his breath caught in his throat, Laura looked breathtakingly beautiful, her hair looked redder than ever and her green eyes sparkled, "Good day Darlin, are you ready to go?"

"Yes Ezra, I am" She closed the door behind her and took Ezra's arm, he was looking so handsome today, in his blue jacket.  She walked down the stairs with him, her arm wrapped around his, feeling so proud to be on his arm.  They walked out of the hotel and out into the street, where all the tables where set up with all kinds of food, it was a very festive atmosphere and she reveled in it, especially after the fear and loneliness she had felt the last six months, back at the ranch, without Ezra.

"Hello Ezra, this must be Laura, Ezra's told us so much about you, it's a pleasure to finally meet you."  Mary said as she stood before the couple, Laura was very beautiful, but she was rather shocked that Ezra had gotten her into the situation she was in, it was somewhat scandalous.

"Yes, Mrs. Travis, this is Laura, my bride to be."  He smiled at Mary, but couldn't help noticing a look of disapproval in her eyes, he didn't care, Mary was not someone he felt a need to please.

"Pleasure to meet you Mrs. Travis."  Laura extended her hand and Mary shook it briefly, then moved on.

"I'm glad you both could come, please enjoy yourselves."  Mary added as she began to move away, at least Ezra had the decency to marry her.

Everyone else that Laura was introduced to was much kinder, all of the other men found her beautiful and charming, all very happy that Ezra had found a woman that loved him and that he loved, happy that he was finally having the family that they all knew he desperately wanted.  They fixed a plate of food and found a quiet, shady spot to share their meal together, as it turned out, that spot under the tree, would also be the perfect spot for them to enjoy the fireworks together.

Inez saw Ezra and Laura sitting alone under the tree, she thought they made a perfect couple and she was very happy for Ezra, she had never seen him so happy before.  She didn't want to disturb them, but she decided to go and see if there was anything they needed.  "Senor Ezra, I thought I would see if you or Senorita Charleston would care for anything more to eat?"

"No, thank you Inez, we are both fine." Ezra smiled up at Inez, she was quite a special lady in her own right.

"Yes, thank you Inez, that was very kind of you to ask." Laura added.

"All right then, enjoy the afternoon, I understand that the fireworks will begin in a few hours."  She looked at the sky, it was just starting to darken slightly as the sun reached the horizon.

"We look forward to it, they are supposed to be especially good this year."  Ezra commented, his eyes on Laura's face the whole time."

"Yes, they are, I will see you both later, good evening."  Inez departed, it was obvious they wanted to be alone.

Ezra held Laura in his arms for hours, her back to him, he never wanted to let go, she felt so good to him.  His hand rested on her belly, feeling his baby move inside her, he had never felt so happy and content in his life.  Just the scent of her filled his heart with joy and he wanted to kiss her very much.  "Laura Darlin, this moment right now is the most perfect moment I have ever had in my life."

"Oh Ezra, I feel the same way, you make me so happy, I do love you."  She turned slightly in his arms, so she could look at him.  His eyes sparkled with happiness and she could not resist the urge to kiss him.  She leaned up and brought her mouth to his, sealing them together as their love flowed through the kiss.  Just as their lips met, the first of the fireworks went off, but they didn't even notice at first.  After a few moments they broke the kiss and watched the fireworks. "Oh Ezra, they are so beautiful."

"Yes they are Darlin, quite spectacular."  He held her tighter, stroking her hair and wanting more than anything to kiss her again.  He turned her face to him, seeing her eyes sparkle with the glow of the fireworks, he took her mouth with incredible tenderness and kissed her long and deep, feeling her melt against him and moan softly.  This was heaven, no question about it, it had to be.

The next morning Chris, Buck, Vin, and JD were all headed for the ranch of Laura's parents, ready to assist them in their efforts to get rid of Guy Royal.  Ezra was helping Laura get settled into the hotel, as it would be several weeks before the purchase of a home could be completed and he wanted her to be as comfortable as possible.  He also moved his belongings from his room over the saloon, to her room at the hotel, not wanting to be away from her.  Nathan and Josiah were at the church, which in and of itself was not unusual, but instead of making repairs, they were decorating it.  Ezra had announced his intentions to marry Laura yesterday and they were all happy for them.

It was time now for Ezra to make the rounds, checking the town to be sure everything was all right, but he didn't want to leave Laura.  He had no choice however, it was his job and the people of Four Corners counted on him to do it.  "Darlin, I am afraid I must go for a bit, it's my turn to patrol the town and make sure everything is all right, can I do anything for you before I take my leave?"

"No Ezra, but I would like to go down and sit outside for a while, if you don't object."  She took his hand and moved next to him.

"Certainly Darlin, it is a beautiful day and you should enjoy it."  He took her arm and curled it around his, pausing a moment to kiss her, he would be the happiest man in the world if the rest of his life was like this.

"I love you Ezra."  She kissed him.

"I love you too, I can't wait for our baby to be born."  He caressed her cheek, then turned and opened the door, escorting her out and shutting it behind them. "Shall we?"

"Yes."  She smiled, Ezra was the most amazing man and she had never loved anyone the way she loved him.  She walked with him down the stairs and out of the hotel, letting him help her sit in a chair out front.  As Ezra turned to walk away, she spoke, "Please be careful Ezra, I don't want anything to happen to you."

"Don't worry Darlin, I will be fine."  He moved back to her and kissed her softly, then moved away, needing to get moving. "I shall return before you even know I was gone."

"I already do Ezra."  She smiled and gave him a knowing glance, she knew he felt the same way, every second they were apart was like an eternity.  She watched him walk away, moving down the boardwalk and doing his job, checking the stores and alleys, making sure things were safe and secure, she really loved him.

Ezra walked along, performing his duties, but thinking about Laura and the precious child she carried, he never thought he could be this happy, this content and he was very grateful to the fates that be, for bringing them together.  He looked up to see that he was now on the other side of the street, directly across from where Laura sat, he looked at her as she sat there, the gentle breeze moving her beautiful red hair about, her eyes sparkled with life and happiness, how had he gotten so very lucky?  Just then a fight in the saloon came out onto the boardwalk in front of him, he recognized one of the men as someone he had played poker with the other night, he had beaten him badly and the man had demanded a rematch, but he'd been busy with Laura since then.

"Hey you, Standish, you owe me a rematch, I demand it."  The drunken cowhand demanded.

"As much as the opportunity to take more of your money appeals to me, I am on duty right now."  If this man didn't settle down, he was going to have to arrest him.

"Nice excuse, but I think your just afraid to play me, your afraid I'll catch you cheating." He pulled his gun and aimed it at the fancy dressed Standish, intending to show him what he thought of cheaters.

"Put that down, there is no need for violence."  Ezra tried to calm the man, stepping slightly to be out of his aim, when the man fired his gun, Ezra dropped to the ground the bullet just missing him.  Then he heard a scream and his heart froze, he knew that voice, "LAURA.........."  He jumped up and ran to her, the bullet had gone across the street and hit Laura in the belly.  "GOD, Laura."  He knelt beside her, having lowered her from the chair, and was attempting to stop the bleeding, he was terrified, he didn't want to lose her and the baby was in danger too, "SOMEONE GET NATHAN"

Ezra gently lifted Laura in his arms, making his way towards Nathan's clinic, not caring about the blood staining his fine clothes, all that mattered was the woman in his arms, the woman he loved more than anything, "Darlin, please don't leave me."

"Ezra...." Laura whispered, then lost consciousness completely.

"Laura? Can you hear me?  God no, please?"  He got her through the door and laid her down on the bed, a moment later Nathan was beside him, "You have to help her Nathan, I can't lose her."

"I'll do what I can Ezra, but ya know I ain't no doctor."  He began to examine Laura, he was very worried, the bullet had hit her in the stomach and he was fairly certain that the baby was in real trouble, but he also knew that the baby was not developed enough yet to survive outside the mother's womb.  "Ezra, go to the stove and put on some water, I am going to need some hot water and clean cloth's, Ezra? Did you hear me?"

"Yes Nathan, I will do as you ask."  He stood and moved to the stove, trying not to take his eyes off Laura, all the blood and the baby, what about the baby?  It was all he could think of.

Nathan began to remove Laura's dress, he needed to get a better look at the damage, he had told Ezra to do those things in order to distract him and hopefully keep him out of the way, at least temporarily.

Josiah in the mean time, found the man that had fired the shot, he was sober now and seemed to be in shock, Josiah knew the man had not meant to harm anyone, but it was his job to arrest him anyway. "I'm sorry son, but your under arrest."

"I don't care, I won't fight you, I never meant to hurt anyone, is that woman going to be ok?"  He had been so shocked to see what his bullet had done, he never wanted to hold a gun again.

"I don't know brother, but I hope so."  He silently prayed for Laura, prayed that she and the baby, Ezra's baby would survive.  He didn't think Ezra could take it if they didn't, he would be devastated.  He took the man to the jail, then made his way to the clinic, being stopped by Inez on the way."

"Senor Sanchez, I heard what happened, do you know if Senorita Laura and the baby are all right?"  She was ready to cry, she had been so happy for Ezra, he was finally going to have the family he so desperately wanted, now it might all be taken away from him.

"I don't know Inez, I was headed to the clinic now, would you care to join me?"

"Yes, please."  They walked together up the stairs, stepping through the door and gasping at what they saw, Laura was on the bed, there was blood everywhere and Nathan was working on her, Ezra was standing by the stove, staring at the scene, it was obvious he was in shock.  Inez walked to him and put her arms around him, holding him tight, "She will be all right Ezra, I know she will."

"Thank you Inez."  He spoke the words so softly that Inez almost didn't hear him. He held her tight, still unable to take his eyes off Laura.

"Nathan, is there anything I can do?"  Josiah asked, he was so worried, there was so much blood.

"Pray Josiah, pray.  I am not a doctor and this may be more than I can deal with, she needs a real doctor."  He sighed, he knew what he had to do, but it was Ezra that had to make that decision, not him.

Nathan prepared himself for the conversation he was about to have with Ezra, it was going to be difficult, not to mention painful for Ezra.  The procedure wasn't simple, but fortunately, or unfortunately, he had performed it before.  If he was going to do it successfully, he would need to start right away, there was no time to waste, not if he was going to save Laura.  "Josiah, could you and Inez wait outside, I need to talk to Ezra."  Josiah nodded and took Inez outside.

"Nathan, how is she?"  Ezra was in shock, he couldn't believe this had happened, it was only a few hours ago that he was so happy, they were so happy, now he might lose it all.

"Ezra, your not going to like what I am about to say, but you have to listen and make a decision."  He took a deep breath, he had to just come out and say it.

"Decision? What decision Nathan?  I don't understand."  He had a sinking feeling that he knew, but he wanted to deny it for as long as possible.

"Ezra, listen to me, right now both Laura and the baby are dying, I can save Laura, but only if I take the baby, do you understand?  If I don't take the baby, they will both die, I need you, as her future husband and father of the baby, to give me the ok to do it."  He watched Ezra's face, looking for any sign of confusion or denial, he saw none, just pain and grief.

"Yes Nathan, if that's what it takes to save my beloved Laura, then that's what you must do."  Ezra had known it was coming, he was going to lose his baby before he even had a chance to know it, he would insist on giving it a name, it would not be buried in an unmarked grave.

It hurt Nathan to see such sorrow and pain on the southerners face, it was not something he was used to, Ezra was usually rather happy.  He stood and moved to the door, opening it and stepping out, he needed Josiah to do some things for him. "Josiah, I need your help."

"Certainly Brother Nathan, anything I can."  He too knew what was happening, knew that Nathan was going to have to take the baby in order to save Laura, Ezra must be devastated.

"I need you to bring Inez back over here, I will need assistance for this, then take Ezra to the church, I think he will need that and I don't want him around while I do this."

"Certainly, I will get Inez now."  Josiah could see the sorrow on Nathan's face too, it couldn't be easy to deal with things like this, especially when it involved people you cared about.

Josiah fetched Inez, she was more than willing to help Nathan, even though she knew it was going to be very difficult.  She knew things would be bad when Laura woke up, she would be dealing with a lot of grief when she learned her baby was gone.  She walked with Josiah to the clinic, giving Ezra a long hug, seeing the pain he was in, reflected in the depths of his emerald eyes.

Josiah escorted Ezra out of the clinic, Nathan and Inez were gathering the items needed for the procedure.  He guided Ezra to the church, he was almost catatonic and went where Josiah led him.  He sat Ezra down on one of the pews and sat next to him, "If you want to talk Ezra, I am right here, it would do you good to get the pain your feeling, out."

"Not now, I can't, not until I know if Laura will be all right, do you understand?"  He stared at his hands, all he could think of was Laura, seeing her laying on the ground bleeding, he knew at that moment that he'd lost his child forever, but not Laura, he wouldn't lose Laura, no matter what.

"I understand Ezra, you just sit here, I am going to do some praying for Miss Laura."  He stood and moved to the front of the church, kneeling down and beginning to pray, all they could do was wait and it would probably be a long wait.

It took several hours, but Nathan finally finished working on Laura, she was very weak and had lost a lot of blood, he still didn't know if she would make it and he was worried, she would have to fight if she wanted to make it.  He had thanked Inez for her help, it had been vital, he told her to go and get some rest.  They were both physically and emotionally drained, especially after dealing with the tiny baby's body. He had taken it and wrapped it in a sheet, it was so small and it broke both their hearts to see it, him.  Nathan would let Ezra and Laura deal with the burial, it would be something they would need to do, to say good-bye to the tiny life.  Laura was unconscious and her pulse was weak, but he felt she would make it with enough rest and time, now he had to get Ezra.

Ezra had been sitting in the church, where Josiah had left him, the entire time, his eyes never straying from his hands.  He didn't want to think, it hurt to think and he was afraid, afraid of losing everything and he didn't want to face that. He had tried to pray, but he and God had never been on very good terms, he hoped that it would not stop God from saving his Laura, she was on good terms with God.  He turned when the door to the church opened, rising quickly when he saw Nathan.  "Nathan, is Laura all right?"

"It's too soon to tell, she's alive, but weak, she lost a lot of blood."  He walked with Ezra back out of the church and back towards the clinic, he knew Ezra wanted to see Laura very much.

"What about the baby?"  Ezra took his eyes from the healer, not wanting to see the expression on his face, not wanting Nathan to see the pain in his own eyes.

"As you know Ezra, he was too small to survive, I have him wrapped in a sheet, you and Laura can take care of his burial when she wakes, I figured you'd want to give him a name."  He tried to look into Ezra's eyes, but he was purposely not looking at him, it told Nathan all he needed to know.

"It was a boy? I had a son?"  Ezra could not look at Nathan, he fought to keep the tears in, he couldn't let his emotions get out of control.

"Yes Ezra, it was a boy."  He took Ezra's arm and guided him to the clinic, letting him go in alone, knowing he needed time alone with Laura.  He closed the door after Ezra and sat outside on the bench, he was exhausted, but he would have to stay close to Laura through the night, in case there were any problems.

Ezra moved to the bed, his eyes locked on Laura's face, her pale complexion and shallow breathing had him worried, his heart was already breaking at the lose of his son, he could not bare to lose Laura too.  He sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand, holding it gently, feeling how cool it felt.  "Laura, please come back to me, I can't bare to lose you, I love you so much."  He bent and gently kissed her lips, reveling in their softness, then he caressed her face.  The tears began to flow freely now, he was alone and could let them go, needed to let them go.  He sat with her for some time, holding her hand and touching her, all he wanted was to lie down beside her and hold her, but that wasn't possible right now.

Nathan was worried, it had been hours since Ezra went into the clinic to be with Laura and as much as he wanted to give them privacy, he needed to check Laura, make sure she was doing all right.  He stood and went to the door, opening it slowly and quietly, what he saw was heart breaking.  Ezra was asleep in the chair, his head on the bed next to Laura, his hand resting lightly on her stomach.  As Nathan looked around, he came to the conclusion that Ezra had picked up the baby, not knowing of course what he had done, but the body was in a different place then where he left it.  The image of Ezra standing there, holding the body of his baby, wrapped in a sheet, made him want to cry.

Laura was beginning to become aware and she was in pain.  She was slowly remembering what had happened, each image falling into place to give her the full picture, her baby was gone, she knew that without even opening her eyes, she felt it in her soul.  She could also feel Ezra's presence, he was very near, but she could not feel much but pain, both physical and emotional.  She didn't want to wake, it would mean dealing with what had happened, dealing with the grief of losing her baby, Ezra's baby.  She felt the tear roll down her cheek, unable to prevent it, not so long ago, she was the happiest woman in the world, now it had come crashing down and she felt nothing but despair.

In Ezra's dream, none of it had happened, he and Laura were married, she had their baby and he was strong and healthy. It was a dream that was not meant to be, just as every dream of his was not meant to be, including his saloon.  He just prayed he didn't lose Laura too, that would be more than he could bare, he felt certain he would lose his mind if he lost her.  He was still holding her hand and he squeezed it gently, needing to feel her, wanting to love her.  He woke when he heard Nathan moving around the room, opening his eyes slowly and blinking the sleep from them.  "Mr. Jackson, how is Laura?"

"She's hanging in there Ezra, her pulse is stronger and she is less pale."  He knew it was a good sign, but it was still too soon to get his hopes up.

"She's going to make it Nathan, I know she is."  Ezra looked at her, moving his hand to caress her cheek, then stroke her soft red hair, his heart ached to see her like that and he wanted nothing more than to take her pain away.

"Ezra, go get some sleep, I will get you if anything changes, your worn out."  Nathan moved over and pulled Ezra to his feet, guiding him to the door, he was not taking no for an answer.

"I don't want to leave her Nathan."  Ezra tried to fight Nathan, but he was too tired, too drained, and perhaps some time alone would be good, he could think of a name for their baby so a funeral could be arranged, along with a headstone for him.

"You ain't doing her any good like this Ezra, get some sleep, then you'll be wide awake tomorrow, when she wakes up.  She's going to need all the strength you can give her, you know that."  He opened the door and pushed Ezra out onto the balcony.

"Very well Mr. Jackson, but you come for me if anything happens, understand?"

"Of course Ezra, now go."  He shut the door and turned to his patient, he needed to check her and change her bandages.

It took Ezra a while to fall asleep, he couldn't stop thinking, his thoughts on Laura, lying in that bed, looking so pale and fragile.  They were also on his son, he had picked up the bundle that was his son's body and held him, walking around the room and crying, he'd always wanted a son and all he could do now was hope that Laura could give him another, hope that she wanted to give him another.  One of his biggest fears was that she would not want to be with him anymore, if she survived, it had been his fault this happened, so he couldn't blame her if she hated him now.  He finally drifted to sleep, falling into a deep sleep, but it was not a dreamless sleep, he only wished it was, for he kept reliving that day all over again, feeling the pain in his heart over and over again.  Eventually the dreams went away and he slept peacefully, knowing Laura would need him to be strong for her.

Laura opened her eyes, it was completely dark and she was confused at first, where was she?  Then the pain reached her and she remembered everything, she had been shot and her baby was gone, she wondered what the baby was, a boy or a girl, not that she cared, all she wanted was to have it back.  She began to cry, the pain of her lose was intense and she wanted Ezra, "Ezra?"  She whispered, but somehow knew he wasn't there.

Nathan heard Laura begin to cry, then her soft whisper for Ezra, he felt so bad for her, but all he could do was try and soothe her back to sleep.  He got up and turned a lamp on low, moving to the bed and sitting on the edge, taking Laura's hand.  "It's ok Miss Laura, you just go back to sleep, you need your rest, Ezra will be here in the morning, he was exhausted."

"My baby, it's gone." It wasn't a question, but a statement of fact.

"Yes, I am sorry Missy."  He stroked her hair, trying to get her back to sleep.

"What was it? A boy or girl?"  She had to know and if it was a boy, she would insist that it be named after his father.

"It was a boy, I have him wrapped in a sheet, so you and Ezra can bury him proper, when your ready."

"Thank you Nathan, you have to promise me something."

            "Sure, whatever I can do."

"No matter what Ezra says, the baby must be named after him, it's my one wish."  She closed her eyes, she was so weak and her heart ached.

"I will, now you sleep."  He pulled the covers up around her chin, making sure she stayed warm, then moved back to his own bed, turning the lamp back down.

Chris, Buck, Vin, and JD were all sleeping around a camp fire, they would reach the ranch tomorrow afternoon, Chris felt certain they could dispatch Royal fairly quickly, he was afraid of the seven men that protected Four Corners now, and knowing they were there to help the Charleston's would make him give up his efforts, plus they didn't want to be away from Four Corners for too long.  Much of their conversation had focused on Ezra and his relationship with Laura, none of them had thought Ezra would become so intensely in love with someone and they were all happy for him, knowing he would make a great father.  Buck had been teasing JD about the fact that JD hoped to be the baby's Godfather, now they all slept peacefully, completely unaware of what was happening back in town.

First thing in the morning, Ezra headed for the clinic, he wanted to check on Laura.  He trusted Nathan to get him if anything happened, but he had to see her for himself, see with his own eyes that she was still among the living.  He had missed her during the night, longing to feel her in his arms, holding her tight.  Ezra stepped quietly into the clinic, Laura lay sleeping in the bed, there was more color to her complexion, which he found encouraging.  He found Nathan sitting at the table having some breakfast, he moved to sit down next to him, "How is she Nathan?"

"She's getting her strength back, she woke briefly during the night, she knows the baby is gone and she made me promise her something Ezra and I intend to keep that promise."  He shoveled a fork full of eggs into his mouth, watching Ezra's face for any signs defiance.

"She made you promise her something? What Nathan?"  Ezra watched Nathan, he was worried about this promise, it scared him a little.

"She made me promise that no matter what you said, the baby was to be named after you."  He took the last bite of eggs and wiped his mouth with the napkin.

"What?  She wants the baby named after me?"  He was stunned, he never gave that a thought, he figured they would name him after her father or one of her brothers.

"That's right Ezra."  Came Laura's weak voice from the bed.

"Laura" Ezra moved to the bed and sat on the edge, taking Laura's hand, he couldn't believe she wanted their son to be named after him, "Are you serious? I would have thought you would want to name him after your father, or one of your brothers."

"They are family Ezra, but you were his father, your the man I love with all my heart."  A tear ran down her cheek, but she made no attempt to wipe it away, closing her eyes instead, as Ezra's soft fingers wiped it away for her.

"Laura, I was so afraid you would have no more to do with me after this, after I cost you our child."  He squeezed her hand, he was so relieved that she didn't hate him for what he'd done.

"Oh Ezra, it wasn't your fault."  She reached up and pulled him to her, kissing him gently and letting it grow deeper.

Ezra felt her begin to cry, her lips trembling against his, it made his heart break that she was so sad.  He stopped kissing her and held her gently, letting her cry into his shoulder, neither of them even noticed that Nathan had left.  He whispered in her ear. "My Darlin Laura, I am so sorry, this was all my fault and I would understand if you hated me."  He felt her hold him tighter, his heart swelled with love, he didn't deserve her, didn't deserve the kind of love she gave him, unconditional love.

"Ezra, it's not your fault and I could never hate you, never, I love you with all my heart and soul, but I do have a decision to make."  She pulled away and looked into his pain and guilt filled, green eyes.

"What decision Darlin?"  He was starting to become afraid again, he knew what that decision was, should she stay with him, a man surrounded by danger, or leave and go back home?  He knew what he wanted her to do, but he also knew that the opposite was probably best for her.

"Whether to stay or go, I know what my heart tells me, but my head is telling me something else, I have to think and decide what I really want."  She leaned back into the pillows, it didn't take much for her to become exhausted right now.

"I won't interfere, I promise, but let me just say that if you stayed and became my wife, I would do everything in my power to make you happy and give you everything you could want, including more children."  He caressed her cheek, watching her struggle to stay awake.

"I know Ezra, I promise you that no matter what my decision, I will always love you."  She closed her eyes and felt his fingers on her cheek as she drifted back to sleep.

"I love you Laura."  He sat with her while she slept, praying to God that her decision would be to stay, he needed her and he knew she needed him, they couldn't get through this without each other.

Ezra spent the morning alone with Laura, attempting to begin the healing process, their need for each other was strong and they clung to each other, sharing their grief for the first time.  Ezra tried to soothe Laura as best he could, she was in a lot of pain, not just emotionally, but physically as well.  He decided it was time to get Nathan, so he could give her something, but Nathan entered the clinic quickly at that moment. "Mr. Jackson, what is the rush?"

"Ezra, there's a brawl in the saloon, we need your help."  Nathan took a deep breath, he had run from the saloon up to the clinic.

"Very well, but Laura is in great pain, can you give her something?"  He moved to the door, ready to perform his duty, no matter how much he didn't want to.  "I shall be back Darlin."

"Please be careful Ezra."  Laura was worried, Ezra could be hurt.

"Fear not my love, I will be fine."  He turned and left, hurrying down the stairs and over to the saloon, where he found Josiah trying to stop the brawl by himself, Inez was hiding behind the bar, he dove into the fray and began to take men down, his anger at what had happened to Laura was set free and he took it out on the brawlers.

Nathan quickly prepared some herbs for Laura, giving them to her quickly and heading for the door to the clinic, he needed to get back and help Josiah and Ezra.  He knew Laura would be all right for a little while, "We'll be back soon Miss. Laura, you just get some sleep."

"Nathan, watch out for Ezra please? I am worried about him."

"Sure thing miss, I won't let anything happen to him."  He nodded and left, also heading to the saloon, the scene would be very different when he got there, than it had been when Ezra got there.  Men were unconscious all over the saloon, Josiah stood at the bar with Inez, both looking shocked and they each had a whiskey in there hands.  Nathan looked around for Ezra, suddenly worried that he wasn't with Josiah and Inez.  "Where's Ezra?"

"Brother Nathan, it would seem that Ezra was harboring some anger over what happened to Laura, he did all this, I had to hit him over the head to stop him, I just hope I didn't hit him too hard."  He pointed to a table.

"You hit him over the head?  Better not let Laura know about this, she would be quite upset."  He moved to the table, seeing Ezra sprawled across it, face down.  He checked Ezra's pulse, it was steady.  He then probed Ezra's head, finding a rather large bump and some blood on the back of it.  "I don't think you hit him too hard, but he's probably going to be out for a while."

"Let's get him to the clinic."  Inez said.

"No, to his room, I don't want Laura seeing him like this, I promised her I wouldn't let anything happen to Ezra."

"I'm sorry Nathan, it was the only way, he was out of control, I had no idea he had all that anger inside him, he sure hid it well."  He moved over and helped Nathan pick Ezra up, both men carrying him up the stairs to his room, Inez followed with a basin of water and some cloth's.  They put Ezra down on the bed, turning him on his side so Nathan could clean the wound on the back of his head.  "Once I have him cleaned up, someone will need to stay with him until he wakes, then make sure he is all right."

"I'll stay Senor Jackson."  Inez set the basin down and dipped a cloth into the cool water, ringing it out and handing it to Nathan.

"You sure Inez, what about the saloon?"  Nathan used the cloth to clean the blood from Ezra's head, then bandaged it.

"I don't think the saloon is going to be open today, not after that mess."  She moved a chair over and sat down, looking at Ezra's face, it was so peaceful now, but earlier it had been full of rage.

"Thanks Inez, I really need to get back to Laura, she's still very weak."  He gathered his things and he and Josiah moved to leave the room, "Come get me if anything happens."

"Se Senor."  Inez began wiping Ezra's face with a wet cloth, hoping it would help him.

Laura used the time alone to think, she had to make her decision quickly, if not, she might never make it.  Every fiber of her being said to stay, that she could be so very happy here with Ezra, she was always happy with Ezra, until recently, but it wasn't his fault.  It had broken her heart to hear him blame himself for everything, it was not his fault and she could never blame him.  There was that small part of her mind though, that said she should leave, should go back home and become an old maid, she knew she would never marry if she returned home, the ranch would become too much of a responsibility and she wanted to have a family more than anything, she wanted that family to include Ezra, she loved him so very much.  The herbs that Nathan gave her for the pain began to work and she drifted to sleep, having several dreams, one in which she stayed with Ezra, it was the happiest dream she ever had, the other was a dream in which she left, returning to the family ranch, despite having her parents with her, she never felt so lonely, her decision was made in her dreams.

Nathan stepped into the clinic after fixing Ezra up, he found Laura asleep, obviously dreaming, he hoped they were good dreams, she didn't deserve to have nightmares in her sleep, she had enough of them in her waking hours.  "Sleep well Miss. Laura."  He was confident that she would make a full recovery, whether she would have any more children was up to God, he had done the best he could, but he wasn't sure what damage might have been done to her, so the only way to know was if she got pregnant again.

Ezra woke a few hours later, it was a groggy, slow waking, his mind foggy and his head pounding, he couldn't quite remember what happened to him, but God his head hurt.  He brought his hand up to find a bandage, now he was really confused.  "Good lord."

"Senor Standish? Are you all right?"  Inez had been worried, he had been out for so long, she was relieved that he was coming to, but she could see the confusion in his eyes.

"Senorita, what happened?"  He tried to sit up, a wave of nausea washed over him and he moved more slowly.

"You don't remember Senor?"  She wanted him to remember on his own, she knew that was important with a head wound.

"Not really, a brawl? I think I hit a few people, who hit me?"  He had a vague memory of Josiah, but why would Josiah hit him. "Josiah?"

"Yes Ezra, your remembering, Josiah had to hit you, because you had gotten out of control, it seemed that you were taking your anger over what happened to Senorita Laura, out on the men in the saloon."  She sighed, hoping she hadn't overstepped her bounds.

"I was." He was ashamed, he normally hid his emotions better than that.

"I am sorry Ezra, but Laura will be fine and you can have more children."  She hoped they could.

"If she stays in Four Corners, perhaps."  He rubbed his face, then began to remove the bandage from around his head.

"You shouldn't remove that, you have a cut on your head, Laura is going to leave?"  She hoped not, Ezra needed Laura, she was the perfect woman for him.

"Yes, she has to decide what she wants, I have to take this bandage off, I can't let her see me like this." He finished removing the bandage and tossed it on the dresser, it had some blood on it, but not much. He stood slowly, feeling a bit light headed, but it quickly passed, then moved to the door, Inez moved with him.

"Where are you going Senor?"  Inez closed the door behind them.

"I want to see Laura, how long was I out?"  He knew if it had been very long, Laura would be worried.

"A couple of hours, but I am sure Laura is fine."  She wished Ezra would just rest, he'd been through so much over the last couple of days.

"Hours?  She must be worried sick."  He moved quickly out of the saloon, leaving Inez behind, he carefully climbed the stairs to Nathan's clinic, why the man couldn't have gotten something on the ground floor, was beyond him.  He entered to find Laura deeply asleep and Nathan was reading one of his medical books.  "How is she Nathan?"

"Resting comfortably, how are you? Your head hurt at all?"  He looked into Ezra's eyes, trying to see any signs of concussion, but saw none.

"No, not really Mr. Jackson, just a dull ache."  He lied, his head was throbbing, but it would pass, he knew it would.  He sat down next to the bed, watching his beautiful Laura sleep.

Back at the Charleston ranch, Chris and the others were making their entrance, it was obvious that Guy Royal was not happy to see them, as they were welcomed with a hail of gunfire, all of them took cover, trying to avoid the flying bullets.  One bullet grazed Chris's arm, nothing serious, just bled a bit. One of Vin's shots embedded itself deeply into the flesh of Royal's right shoulder and he was thrown from his horse, everything fell quiet, everyone was afraid to move, not sure if it was safe.

Vin carefully looked around the rock he had taken cover behind, all of Royal's men where beginning to realize what had happened and they were laying their guns down, knowing that now that their boss was down, the battle was over.  He could see that several of Royal's men were down, from the lack of movement he would guess they were dead.  He turned his blue eyes to Chris, he was concerned about his wound, even though it didn't appear to be serious, they didn't have Nathan to patch him up.

Chris stood and moved out into the open, his gun trained on Royal, just itching for the man to make a wrong move, Royal had been a thorn in Four Corners side for too long now, but he couldn't shot him, not without cause.  "Give it up Royal, leave these folks be and go home."

"I might have known you'd show up Larabee, is there anyone in this state you don't know?"  He slowly rose, the pain in his shoulder seared through him and he gritted his teeth against it.

"Not when it comes to defending them against you Royal, now get on your horse and ride out, take your men with you and don't ever bother these people again."  Chris was angry, Royal thought he could just take anything he wanted and he'd had about enough of it.  He looked up to see a man and woman riding in their direction, he knew it must be Laura's parents.

Laura's parents, Kenneth and Patricia Charleston rode towards the new men, they had stopped Royal, they didn't know who they were, but they had put an end to their torment.  They reached the men just as Royal and his men disappeared over the rise, "I don't know who you gentlemen are, but we are very grateful to you."  Kenneth reached out and shook Chris's hand.

"Lets just say we are friends of Mr. Standish." Vin added.

"Oh, Ezra how is he? And how is my daughter, Laura?"  Patricia asked.

"They are both fine, they are back in Four Corners, making plans for their wedding."  Buck smiled, he knew they would want to know about that.

"That's wonderful, we knew Ezra would do right by her." Kenneth had been worried about whether Ezra would want to marry Laura.

"Oh yes, he loves her very much, I can't wait until the baby is born." JD added excitedly, he wanted to be a part of that baby's life.

"You gentlemen look tired, please join us at the ranch, Patricia will fix you a nice supper and you can spend the night, get a good nights rest before you head home, and she can look after that arm of yours, Mr.?"  Kenneth was so grateful to these men, he'd do anything for them.

"Larabee, Chris Larabee, this here is Vin Tanner, Buck Wilmington, and JD Dunne," They all shook Kenneth and Patricia's hands, their gratitude made all of them feel really good.  "We'd love to take you up on your offer."  They all retreated to the ranch for an evening of good food and friendly conversations, all of them glad that getting rid of Royal had been easy, they hadn't wanted to spend a lot of time getting rid of him and didn't want to stay away from Four Corners for too long either.

Nathan had stepped out of the clinic to get something to eat, leaving the two lovers alone, when he left Laura was still asleep and Ezra sat next to her, absently shuffling his cards and watching Laura.  He wouldn't be gone too long, Laura still needed watching and he had a feeling Ezra's head was not as fine as he claimed, he saw the pain in his eyes.

Ezra couldn't take his eyes from Laura, he could look at her beautiful face forever.  His hands worked his cards, shuffling them and playing tricks with them, without even realizing he was doing it.  His vision was not totally clear and his head still pounded, he realized that Josiah must have hit him pretty hard.  Before he knew what was happening, he lay down next to Laura and drifted off, wanting an escape from the pain in his head and his heart.

Laura woke to find Ezra lying next to her, she was relieved that he was all right, reaching out to caress his soft cheek.  How did she ever get so lucky as to have this man love her the way he did, she had not believed that a love could be that strong, but here it was.  She leaned over carefully, her stomach still ached, and kissed him gently.  She was a little worried that he didn't respond, but knew he must be exhausted, she doubted he had gotten much, if any, sleep since this whole thing happened.  She would tell him of her decision when he woke, knowing he would be happy, more than happy and they could celebrate.  She frowned when she realized that they still had to bury their child, it was not something she was looking forward to, but at the same time, she wanted to get it over with soon.

Laura moved closer to Ezra, resting her head on his shoulder and placing her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating, letting every breath he took wash over her and she closed her eyes.  She loved this man so much it hurt, she wanted to become the air he breathed, become the blood that flowed through his veins, wanted to be everything to him.  She knew in her heart that there was a chance she wouldn't have any more children, that the bullet had done some damage, but she prayed that wasn't true, because more than anything, she wanted to give Ezra another baby.  She knew without a doubt he would be the best father in the world, he had such a gentle heart, he just kept it hidden behind that conman exterior, but she knew for a fact that he had one.

Right now all she wanted was for Ezra to wake, she needed to tell him of her decision, a decision that would make him so very happy.  She was a bit worried, he seemed so deep asleep and didn't know why, of course she imagined that he probably hadn't gotten much sleep since all this happened, so that could be it.  She felt so content right now, resting in the arms of the man she loved, if only she hadn't lost the baby, then everything would be perfect.  She reached up and gently caressed Ezra's face with her fingers, looking at it and taking in every inch, unable to believe that a man could possibly be that incredibly handsome.

Ezra felt Laura's touch, her head on his shoulder and hand on his chest, he reveled in the feelings, but he could not wake, his head still pounded and Laura's gentle touch helped ease the pain.  When she began to caress his face, it felt so wonderful that he fell into a deeper sleep, the pain drifting away, Laura could always make him feel so good.  Deep in the back of his mind, he prayed that Laura would decide to stay with him, he could no longer imagine his life without her, she was his life, she was a part of him and felt certain he would die without her.  They remained there together, both deep in sleep for the rest of the night.

Nathan came in several times to check on them, his estimation that Ezra didn't have a concussion was obviously wrong, it was the only explanation for why he was in such a deep sleep for so long, he would have to keep a close eye on him.  Laura was doing much better, she was stronger and the wounds were healing nicely, no sign of infection, he just hoped her chances for motherhood and not been taken from her as well, she and Ezra would make perfect parents.  He had not let his own feelings show when Laura lost the baby, he had remained professional, but inside he was heart broken, he had seen Ezra with children many times and saw the way he loved them, always able to make them smile, he treated them as equals and not as children, so he knew how much Ezra wanted that baby, knew how devastated he must have been, but of course, he hid most of it quite well.

Mrs. Charleston fixed the four lawmen a hearty breakfast and packed enough food for their journey back home, she and Kenneth again thanked them for their help and asked that they deliver a letter to Laura, then they were on their way, all of them glad they could help the Charleston's, they were such a nice couple and so was Laura.  None of them knew that tragic news would await them when they returned, but that was still another two days away.

"So JD, you really think Ezra and Laura will make you the baby's godfather?" Buck teased.

"I don't know Buck, but I hope so, I already feel like an uncle."  JD grinned, he had no brothers or sisters, so to him Ezra's baby was going to be the brother or sister he never had.

"So do I kid, I think we all do."  Buck glanced at the others and saw the nods, it was funny how a bunch of tough gunslingers could turn to goo in the presence of a baby.

"Think Josiah will have the church ready by the time we return?"  Vin asked, he was excited about the wedding, hadn't seen too many in his day and he knew that Ezra and Laura were meant to be together.

"Maybe, if not we can help him finish up."  Chris added, he was lost in his own thoughts, remembering his wedding to Sarah, it had been the happiest day of his life and he would do whatever it took for it to be the happiest day of Ezra's life.  They rode the rest of the afternoon in comfortable silence, all of them thinking about how quickly one of their owns life had changed completely, Ezra being the last one they thought would ever have a family.

Ezra woke to the feel of Laura in his arms, it was the best feeling he had ever felt, loving Laura made him realize that there were more important things than money.  Love and friendship were invaluable and priceless, Laura and his compatriots had made him see that and he was going to hold on to it for dear life.  It was amazing how the love of a beautiful woman could change everything, he bent and kissed her forehead, smiling and thinking, 'no amount of winning at the tables had made him feel the way he did at that moment.'  He held her tighter, but not too tight, he never wanted to be without her and prayed she would stay, the next two days would be painful, he would make the arrangements for their baby's funeral today and tomorrow afternoon, the funeral would take place, he knew how devastated Laura would be, all he could do was be there for her and comfort her, sharing his own pain with her.

      "Ezra?" Laura whispered softly.

"Yes Darlin, how are you feeling?"  He brought his hand up and stroked her beautiful red hair.

"I feel good, there is still a little pain in my stomach, but not bad, how are you? You were so deeply asleep that I was worried that something was wrong."  She moved her head so she could look into his eyes.

"I am fine, I was merely exhausted from all the previous events."  He smiled at her, still unable to believe what an incredible beauty she was, especially those eyes.

"I need to tell you that I have made my decision Ezra."  She became very serious, gazing deeply into his liquid pools of green.

"Yes Darlin, what have you decided?"  She was giving nothing away, her intense gaze went all the way to his soul.

"I have decided to stay here, I want to be your wife more than anything."  She smiled, seeing the joy that came to his eyes, she loved this man deeply.

"Oh Laura, you have made me so happy, I was so afraid you would leave me alone."  He tipped his head forward and kissed her, kissing her long and deep, until Laura broke the embrace.

"I could never leave you Ezra, I need you as much as you need me." Their eyes were locked together, seeing into each other’s souls, their mouths coming together again in a tender, loving kiss. Then there was a knock at the door, both of them jumped slightly at the sound.

"Come in." Ezra said, knowing it was Nathan.

"You two ok in here?"  He walked in slowly, feeling that he had interrupted something.

"We are fine Mr. Jackson, I feel much better with some sleep."  Ezra moved to get up, he had to get over to the undertaker and make arrangements.

"Are you sure Ezra?" Nathan wanted to check Ezra's head, but knew he shouldn't do so in front of Laura.

"Yes Nathan, I am fine."  He turned to Laura, kissing her hand before he let go, "I will return shortly Darlin, I have some arrangements to make."

"For the baby?" Laura knew they would have to bury him soon, she couldn't prevent the tear that fell, but closed her eyes as Ezra bent and kissed the tear away.

"Yes Darlin, the funeral will be tomorrow afternoon, will you be up for it?"  He watched her face, knowing the pain she felt in her heart, he felt the same pain.

"Yes, I have to be there Ezra."  She knew he would do whatever it took to make sure she was there.

"Very well, I will return forthwith."  He moved away, nodding to Nathan, he really didn't want to talk right now, he was going to have a hard enough time making the arrangements for their baby's funeral.  The funeral would be at the same time the other four members of the group were returning to Four Corners, it wouldn't take long for them to find out what happened.

The four men road into town, they were tired and sore, but couldn't help noticing that the town appeared empty.  The streets were almost empty, hardly a soul was out, it was a hot day, but there should still be more people, Chris wasn't the only one to notice this.

"What's goin on Chris?" Vin asked, looking around puzzled.

"I don't know Vin, place almost looks like a ghost town."  Chris stopped his horse in front of the saloon and dismounted, there had to be someone in the saloon that would know.

"I hope nothing bad happened while we were gone." JD said as he also dismounted.

The four men walked into the saloon, half expecting to see Inez behind the bar, but she wasn't there. Dan was behind the bar though and they all approached him, "Bottle of whiskey Dan, where is everyone?" Chris added.

"That's right, you fella's have been out of town, so you don't know."  Dan placed the bottle on the bar along with four shot glasses. Then began to wipe the bar down, watching the four men in front of him, trying to gauge their reactions.

"Know what Dan?" Buck said sharply.

"About Miss Laura, she was shot in the stomach, I believe it was just after you all left, Mr. Jackson had to take the baby in order to save Laura, everyone is at the cemetery right now for the funeral."  Dan sighed, the whole thing was such a tragedy, he had volunteered to watch the bar, so Inez could go to the funeral.

"What?" All four of them said at once.

"Yep, poor Mr. Standish has been very upset."  Dan put another bottle on the bar for them, but then turned away and headed out of the saloon.

"I can't believe this Chris, I just can't."  Buck said as he pushed through the batwing doors.

"I know Buck, lets get over there and see what we can do."  Chris walked faster, wanting to get to the cemetery as quickly as possible.  The men arrived there to find Josiah performing the eulogy, everyone stood around the smallest coffin any of them had ever seen.  Chris could see the tears in JD's eyes and he felt for the kid, this whole thing stirred up some painful memories for himself.  They stood quietly as the funeral came to an end, they saw Laura in a wheelchair, Ezra at her side, they both looked so devastated, Chris wished he had been there, he might have been able to help Ezra through some of the grief.

Ezra and Laura stopped as they reached the four dirty and tired men, Ezra could see the sorrow on their faces.  He actually let Buck give him a hug and felt Chris give him a reassuring clap on the shoulder, he noticed the tears in JD's eyes, he knew that JD was excited about the baby and he had a good idea why, so it hurt him to see JD upset. "Gentlemen, I assume by your return, that you have dispatched Mr. Royal?"

"Yeah Ezra, he's taken care of, Laura, your parents are fine, they asked me to give you this."  Chris handed the letter to Laura, the grief was apparent on her face.

"Thank you Chris for helping my parents, I am in your debt."  She tried to smile, but the grief of the funeral made it difficult.  She had cried hard when she saw the beautiful head stone that Ezra had purchased, reading Ezra P. Standish II, date of birth and death was the same, it also said, beloved son of Ezra and Laura.

"Don't think anything of it Laura, I am so terribly sorry for your lose, I do know what your going through." He knelt down in front of her and brushed the tears away, all his memories of Sarah and Adams deaths, resurfacing.  "I lost my wife and son, so if you ever need to talk, I am here."

"Thank you again Chris, I will remember your generous offer, now I am tired and would like to rest."  She touched Chris's hand, letting him know how much she appreciated his offer, then Ezra pushed her chair towards the clinic.

"Are you all right Darlin?" Ezra was worried, she seemed so very tired, but then he felt tired too, the emotions of the day had drained the energy from them.

"Yes Ezra, I am just so tired, I need some time alone with you."  She let Ezra pick her up in his arms and carry her up the stairs to the clinic.

Ezra placed Laura on the bed, making sure she was comfortable, then sat on the bed next to her, taking her in his arms, her back to him. "I know how difficult today was Darlin, but everything will get better, we will be wed in another week and we can begin our lives again, as husband and wife."  He kissed the top of her head, feeling the sobs in her body, he let her cry, knowing it was what she needed and they drifted to sleep there.

Back at the cemetery, Josiah and Nathan joined the other four, all moving to the saloon, none of them happy at the moment.  Buck could not help noticing JD's dismay, he knew how much the kid had wanted that baby, he knew the kid had hoped to have the brother or sister he never had, now it was all gone.  "Come on kid, I'll buy you a milk."

"Thanks Buck, but right now I think I need something stronger."  JD couldn't believe that little baby was gone, that it hadn't even had a chance at life.  He held in the tears that wanted to fall, he would save that for when he was alone, he couldn't begin to imagine the pain Ezra must be in, if he was in this much pain and the baby wasn't even his, then Ezra must be in hell.  "Poor Ezra." He mumbled.

      "What's that JD?" Vin asked.

"I just said, poor Ezra."  He sat heavily and began to guzzle the beer that had been placed in front of him.

"Yes, he really wanted that baby, but sometimes things were just meant to be Brother John." Josiah had tried to be there for Ezra, to provide some spiritual guidance and support, but Ezra wasn't much of a religious man.

"I hope she can have more baby's." JD said, looking at Nathan.

"I don't know JD, I fixed her up as good as I could, but it's all up to God now."  He sighed, he wished he could have done more, but he wasn't that experienced with the female anatomy.  They all sat quietly and got drunk, at least their trip to Laura's home had been a success.

Laura woke a few hours later, Ezra was gone and a sudden wave of loneliness washed over her, she felt empty inside, where was he?  She took the letter Chris had given her, from her parents, and opened it, she knew she would need to let them know about the baby, they had a right to know.  She began to read, her parents faces filling her mind and some of the loneliness disappeared.

      Darling Laura,

We are happy that you made it to Four Corners safely and that Ezra is treating you well, we knew deep down that he would, he's a good man, even if he doesn't realize it.  We are so grateful to Ezra's friends for helping us take care of Mr. Royal, things can get back to normal now.  We wish we could be there for your wedding, but it will not be possible, the ranch needs so much work now that we can move around freely.  Please know that we will always love you and we miss you, be sure and let us know when the baby is born and if it's a boy or girl, it's hard to believe that we will be grandparents, but we are quite proud to be.  Please take care of yourself and let Ezra know that we are happy for him and we are proud to have him as a son-in-law.

                                                                                          Much Love

                                                                                   Your Ma and Pa

Laura was crying, how was she ever going to tell her parents that the baby was gone? At least she could tell them that she and Ezra were still getting married, that perhaps she would have another baby.  She looked up as the door to the clinic opened and Ezra walked in carrying a large box.

"Darlin, what is wrong?" Ezra set the box down and moved to her side, taking her in his arms.

"I missed you and reading the letter from my parents made me cry, there is nothing wrong, what's in the box?" She was looking at the box, unable to imagine what was in it.

"It's a surprise for you, Mrs. Potter at the General Store gave it to me, she wanted you to have it."  He kissed her and stood, moving to the box and bringing it to Laura, he wanted her to open it herself.

"A surprise, Ezra what is it?"  She put her hand on the box, wanting to open it.

"Open it and see."  Ezra smiled, he knew she would be delighted, he watched her open it, seeing her eyes light up and a smile come to her face, it was the first smile he had seen on her in so long.

"Oh Ezra, it's beautiful, I love it."  She carefully pulled the white wedding gown from the box, it was made of satin and lace and was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen.

"I am glad Darlin, I want our wedding to be perfect, I want it to be the happiest day of our lives."  He sat next to her and caressed her cheek, so happy to see her smiling.  He leaned in and kissed her, tasting her sweet, soft lips, he couldn't wait to make her his wife. "Inez has offered to help fit the dress to you, she has offered any assistance you might want for the wedding."

"That's so sweet of her, please thank her and let her know that I would love to have her help, I would also love for her to be my maid of honor."  She leaned back against the pillows, unable to take her eyes off the wedding dress, it was so beautiful, she couldn't wait to marry Ezra, to spend the rest of her life with him.

"Mr. Jackson says you will be free to return to our accommodations at the hotel tomorrow, do you feel up to it?"

"Yes, I really am tired of being in bed and I need to get my strength back, I can't do that laying here." She took Ezra's hand, her fingers caressing it, touching the area on his finger where the wedding ring would soon reside.  She felt him turn her hand and kiss the palm, then kissing her wrist, she closed her eyes, desires stirring in her that she knew she wasn't ready for yet.

Ezra stopped what he was doing, realizing that Laura would not be ready for what he wanted for some time yet, but it didn't change his desire to make love to her, he would just have to find other ways to love her. He watched her eyes grow heavy, struggling to stay awake, he took the wedding dress from her and put it back in the box, then lay down beside her, taking her in his arms and gently rocking her to sleep.  He would do anything for her, she was his savior, changing him forever, making him a better man, a more caring man.

Ezra helped Laura move back into their hotel room, she was much stronger now and walked on her own fairly well, but if she didn't have Ezra there for support, she would have to lean on the railings and walls to get where she was going.  There was still some pain in her stomach and it's size had only decreased slightly, she hated the thought of getting married with that stomach still there, it would have been different if their baby was still inside, but now it was just a painful reminder.  Once she was settled in a rocking chair, Ezra left to take his turn at rounds.  Inez came over a short time later and they worked on fitting the wedding dress, Inez was careful not to let Laura over do it.  "Inez, I can't thank you enough for all your help, I appreciate it more than you know."

"Your welcome Senorita Laura, I am very happy to help, I like you and Ezra is important to me, he helped change my life."  She smiled up at Laura, carefully adjusting a seam on the dress.

"How did he do that?" Laura was curious, apparently Ezra cared about a lot of people.

"He gave me a job in the saloon, when he was the owner, if he hadn't I would probably be dead now."  She finished sewing the seam and stood, scrutinizing her work.

"I am glad he could be of such good help to you, he is a special man, he just seems to feel the need to hide it from everyone."  Laura removed the dress, replacing it with her nightgown, and sat down in the chair, feeling a little tired.

"That would be because of his mother Maude, I've never met such an unloving mother, it's really a wonder that Ezra turned out so special, with a mother like her."  Inez sat down next to Laura, watching her closely, she didn't look too good.

"I am not sure I want to meet this woman, or have her as a mother-in-law, she's that bad?"  She looked at Inez, hoping she would say it wasn't so.

"Se, she actually cheated Ezra out of the saloon, owning a saloon was Ezra's biggest dream and she snatched it out from under him, I've never seen Ezra so hurt, until now, but I don't think he cares about a saloon anymore, your his life now."  Inez put her sewing away, the adjustments to the dress were done, it hadn't needed much.

"I certainly know he is mine, I can't even remember what it was like without him, I am happy that you will be my maid of honor, your the closest thing I've had to a best friend."  She stood to escort Inez to the door, the two hugged.

"Se, I have not had many female friends either, Mary is nice, but she's not best friend material, get some rest Laura, I will check with you later to see if you need anything."  She turned to leave, it was nice to have someone to do women things with.

Laura closed the door behind Inez and laid down on the bed, closing her eyes and dreaming of her wedding day, Ezra looked so handsome and she felt more love for him than she ever had, she couldn't wait for that day to arrive, she needed some happiness.  She did not stir when Ezra came in, still in a state of deep sleep, so she did not feel him kiss her with a feather light kiss and leave again.

Ezra had stopped to check on Laura, finding her sleeping deeply, so he kissed her and left, having several errands to run for their upcoming nuptials.  He wanted everything to be perfect, but he was beginning to worry that the rings he had ordered would not arrive in time, that would be unacceptable.  He did not want to postpone the wedding, but if the rings didn't arrive he would have to.

Ezra was on his way to the telegraph office when he ran into Chris, he had been very appreciative of Chris's support after the baby was lost, especially the advice and support he had given Laura, it was a whole other side to Chris he hadn't seen before, a gentle, caring, understanding side. "Mr. Larabee, how are you today?"

"Fine Ezra, how are you and Laura holding up?"

"Just trying to get through each day, concentrating on the wedding now." He glanced down the street, talking about his emotions like that was uncomfortable, but he was starting to get used to it.

"Good Ezra, I look forward to the ceremony." He started to walk away when he felt Ezra's hand on his arm.

"Mr. Larabee, I have a favor to ask, if you would be so kind." Ezra had been nervous about asking Chris this, but he had to do it, for Laura.

"Yes Ezra, what is it?" He was a bit worried, Ezra seemed rather nervous.

"Since Laura's parents cannot attend the wedding, she was wondering if you would mind giving her away." There, he said it, but the reaction he got was not what he expected, he expected Chris to give him a flat no, but instead Chris was smiling.

"I would be honored Ezra, please let Laura know that I am honored that she wanted me to do that, who's going to be your best man? Buck?"  He put his hand on Ezra's shoulder and squeezed, the poor man sure did have trouble showing emotion.

"I will let Laura know, I believe I will ask Mr. Dunne to be my best man, he was so excited about the baby, I must make it up to him somehow."  He felt the sorrow begin to fill him again, he needed to get away.

"Ok Ezra, I'll talk to you later." Chris could see the sorrow on Ezra's face and decided to end that conversation immediately.  He moved on to the saloon, he needed a drink, this kind of thing always brought back painful memories.

Ezra continued toward the telegraph office, wanting to send a telegram about the rings he ordered.  He had only sent to Tucson for them and thought they should be arriving any time.  He had seen the rings in the General Store there two months ago, he couldn't take his eyes from the engagement ring, it would be perfect for Laura, at the time he believed he would never see her again, so when she came back into his life, he immediately sent for that ring, along with a set of wedding bands. He sent his telegram and headed back to the hotel, his conversation with Chris had left him feeling sad.

Laura looked up when the door opened, trying to hide the tears in her eyes, she looked back down, but she knew Ezra had seen them, she had seen sadness on his face too. No matter what they tried, the pain just was not going to go away easily and they should have known that.  She stood and moved over to him, feeling him take her in his strong arms, holding her tight.  She thanked God she had him, she would never get through this without him.  "I love you Ezra."  She tipped her head up and kissed him gently, then put her face in his chest and cried.

Ezra held Laura and let her cry, tears sliding down his own cheeks, he wondered if the pain would ever truly go away, he hoped so, because the ache inside him was almost unbearable.  "Laura, I love you."  He kissed the top of her head, holding her a little tighter. "I talked to Chris, he said he would be honored to give you away."  He wanted to distract her, distract himself, and hoped that focusing on the wedding again, would do so.

"That's great Ezra, I am glad he was happy to do it." Her voice was soft and muffled as she talked into his chest.

Ezra guided Laura over to the bed and gently laid her down, then removed his jacket, guns, and boots, and joined her, taking her in his arms and kissing her with all the love he had in his body.  They kissed for some time, holding each other tight, it was the best way he had of loving her right now, until she was ready to make love again.  Soon they were both asleep, the late afternoon sun streaming into the room, filling it with a warm glow.

Laura woke to find herself in Ezra's arms, the room was filled with a pink glow as the sun began to set.  She rest her head on Ezra's chest and closed her eyes, loving the feel of his chest rising and falling as he breathed, hearing his heart beating, she wanted to be one with him so much.  She began to cry, she loved him so much and being in his arms made her so happy she couldn't help crying.  She heard a soft knock on the door, she knew it must be Inez, she had said she would come back.  She kissed Ezra gently on the lips, then moved carefully away from him, not wanting to wake her sleeping savior.  She opened the door and motioned for Inez to be quiet. "Hello Inez, Ezra is sleeping."

"I have a telegram here for Ezra, I picked it up on the way here." Inez whispered, she had a feeling she was interrupting something.

"Thank you Inez, would you like to come in?" She took the telegram from Inez and set it on the dresser.

"No, Senor Ezra is sleeping and I don't want to disturb him, I just wanted to be sure you were all right."  She smiled, Laura looked healthier than she had in a week.

"I feel very good Inez, thanks to Ezra, he is healing me in ways I don't even think he knows about."  Laura looked at him sleeping on the bed, 'God he was so incredibly handsome', she thought.

"I will see you later then."

"I think Ezra and I will be dining in the hotel restaurant tonight, please join us."

"Thank you Laura, but the saloon will be busy, but please give Ezra my best."  She turned to leave, happy that Laura and Ezra seemed to be doing well.

"Good evening Inez."  Laura closed the door and moved back to the bed, lying down next to Ezra again, she would wait for him to wake, then let him know about the telegram.

Ezra woke a short time later, pulling Laura close to him and kissing her deeply, tasting her lips and feeling the love flow through him, it seemed like his love for her grew with every moment, but how could that be? He thought he already loved her more than was humanly possible.  "Good evening Darlin, how are you feeling?"

"Good Ezra, for the first time in a week, I feel good." She kissed him in return, his kiss was the most amazing thing she ever felt.

"Would you care to partake in dinner with me at the hotel restaurant this evening?"  He smiled at her, seeing the spark of life in her green eyes once again.

"Yes Ezra, by the way Inez came by with a telegram for you."  She got up off the bed and moved to the dresser, picking up the telegram, she had been dying to know what it was about, but with their wedding coming up, she didn't want to spoil any surprises he might have for her, so she handed it to him.

"Thank you Darlin." Ezra read the telegram, the rings had gone out on the last stage, so they should arrive in Four Corners on tomorrow's stage, this news made him very happy.

"Good news I take it?" Laura was dying to know, but she would restrain herself.

"Yes Darlin, you will find out tomorrow."  He was greatly relieved, he wanted her to have the engagement ring before the wedding, which was a little less than a week away now.

Ezra and Laura enjoyed a nice, quiet dinner at the restaurant that night, occupying a table in the corner, feeding each other and kissing. Laura looked healthier than she had in a week and Ezra was very happy to see her energy return, the fire of happiness in her eyes, her belly got smaller with every day and soon it would be back to it's normal, flat size.  He was so anxious for tomorrow to arrive, he couldn't wait to give Laura the engagement ring, it spoke her name.

Laura had enjoyed dinner with Ezra, it had been a wonderful evening and she felt truly happy for the first time in a week.  She was also glad that her stomach was getting smaller, it was a painful reminder of what she had lost and she wanted it to be back to normal.  She and Ezra had slowly walked back to the hotel after dinner, holding each other and enjoying the warm evening, the stars shining brightly above.  They slept together, sleeping so close together that they almost felt as one, but she knew it would be a little while until she was up to making love again, there was no doubt in her mind that she would want to on their wedding night, she needed to make love to him.

The next day, Ezra paced in front of the saloon, waiting for the stage to arrive, his compatriots enjoying his anticipation, watching the love struck gambler pace nervously.  Chris was getting irritated with his pacing, it was driving him crazy, "Ezra, will you sit down, the stage isn't due for an hour yet."  He didn't want to get angry with Ezra, he understood what he was going through, but at eleven o'clock in the morning, it was already hot and everyone was becoming irritable.

"Thank you for telling me the time Mr. Larabee, but I believe I have a right to pace if I choose."  He regretted the tone of his voice the moment he spoke, but he was anxious and irritable. "I am sorry Chris, I didn't mean to snap."  He sat down heavily, he needed a drink.

"That's ok Ezra, just don't do it again, or I'll have to kill you."  Chris was joking, but his face held no hint of that, he would never hurt Ezra or any of his friends.

"I shall endeavor to remember that Mr. Larabee."  Ezra smiled, he knew Chris was joking, even if he didn't show it.  He took a beer from Buck as he came out of the saloon with a hand full of mugs.

"Stage arrived yet?" Buck asked, an evil grin on his face.

"Well, Mr. Wilmington, as I am sure you already know, it has not."  Ezra was not amused.  He began to think of Laura, her beautiful face, those incredible green eyes, her smile, it amazed him how much he loved her, he never thought he could feel that kind of love, not after how he was raised, with no love at all.  Laura was currently with Inez, they were arranging for flowers for her bridal bouquet and working on her vows.  Ezra had thought long and hard about his vows, he wanted them to be special and express just how much he loved Laura, he decided not to write anything down, he would speak from his heart at the moment, letting his heart speak for him, which was not something he was used to, but he knew he could do it for her.

The stage finally arrived and Ezra headed in that direction, the others had all retreated into the saloon, hoping to escape the heat and give Ezra some privacy.  Ezra met the driver and asked about a package for him, the driver handed him the small package and he immediately began to open it as he walked away, wanting to be sure he had received the correct rings.  To his delight they were correct, he moved in the direction of the hotel, so he could place the engagement ring on Laura's finger, ridding her of the cheap ring he had given her before.  That was when gunfire erupted from the bank and three men came running out, Ezra drew his gun and began to fire at them, trying to find cover.  Before he could find it, a bullet from one of the robbers grazed him in the forehead and he went down, losing consciousness.

In the hotel, Laura cringed and began to shake, the sound of gunfire scared her and the memories of that day came flooding back, she also worried that Ezra could be hurt or killed. Was this what her life would be like?  Worrying every day that Ezra would not come home to her?  Well, she could live with it, her love for Ezra was more powerful then her worries.  She noticed Inez looking at her with concern, "I'm all right, the gunfire just startled me."

"Are you sure Senorita?  I can go and see what is happening if you like."  Inez knew Laura would be worried about Ezra, so maybe if she could get her to stay there, while she checked to see what was going on, it would save her any worry.

"Thank you Inez, I would appreciate that."  She couldn't go herself, the fear was griping her right now and she trusted Inez to tell her the truth.

"I will be right back then."  Inez left quickly, heading down the stairs and out of the hotel, she was horrified to see Ezra lying motionless in the middle of the street.

Inez ducked back into the hotel as more gunfire erupted on the street, she stared out the window at the scene unfolding before her, the other six lawmen began shooting at the robbers, taking them down one by one.  Her eyes focused on the motionless form of Ezra laying in the middle of the street, his hat was on the ground a few feet away and the hot afternoon breeze ruffled his hair, that was the only movement from him.  She began to panic, what if he was dead? She couldn't stand the thought of losing her friend and knew Laura wouldn't be able to handle it, the pain grew in her heart as she watched, she could see blood on his face.  As soon as the robbers were subdued she quickly ran out and over to Ezra, Nathan was already at his side.  "Senor Nathan, how is he?"

"I need to examine him, but I don't think he's in any real danger."  Nathan lifted Ezra's eyelids, checking the pupil’s reactions, they were normal.  Nathan was pretty sure that he was just unconscious from the initial impact of the bullet, it had grazed his forehead and that would need stitching, it had bled quite a bit, but he didn't think it was all that much.

"What should I tell Senorita Laura?"

"Shit, don't lie to her, tell her he has a mild concussion, but should be fine."  He looked up at Inez and smiled, Ezra was too stubborn to die, especially with someone like Laura in his life now.

"Ok Senor, I am going back to the hotel and get her, we will be to the clinic in a few moments."  Inez took in Ezra's still form one last time, then turned to leave.

"That's fine, I should have him settled by then." Nathan and Josiah lifted Ezra up and headed towards the clinic, the other men were taking care of the robbers, Chris took the money they stole back to the bank.  They laid Ezra down on the bed and Nathan took a wet cloth and cleaned the blood from the side of his face, allowing him to get a better look at the wound.  It was fairly deep, but a few stitches should take care of it, then he will just need some rest.

Inez went back to the hotel and reluctantly knocked on Laura's door, still not quite sure what to say to her.  As the door opened she saw the fear in Laura's eyes, she needed to let her know about Ezra, without scaring her any more.  "Laura, it's all right."  She saw Laura relax, now for the hard part. "Laura, Ezra was injured, but Nathan said he should be fine, he's at the clinic now."  The fear had returned to Laura's green eyes.

"Injured? How bad Inez? Please tell me." Laura was scared again, she couldn't bare the thought of Ezra being hurt.

"A bullet grazed his forehead, but Nathan said it wasn't serious, I told him I would bring you to the clinic."  Inez picked up Laura's handkerchief and handed it to her, so she could wipe the tears away.

"Lets go, I need to see him."  She moved quickly out of the room, leaving Inez to close the door, she rushed down the stairs and out of the hotel, moving quickly towards the clinic.

Chris intercepted Laura on the way to the clinic, he wanted to try and reassure her that Ezra was all right. "Laura, I saw Ezra myself, he was unconscious, but he looked ok, just lost some blood, trust me he will be fine, he's not about to leave you now, your the best thing that every happened to him."  He took Laura's arm and they ascended the stairs together, Chris opening the door for her and allowing Inez to go in before he followed.

Laura had heard what Chris said and appreciated his support, but all she could think of right now was Ezra.  As soon as she was inside the clinic and her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the room, from the bright outdoors, they settled on the man laying on the bed, the man she loved with all her heart and soul, he did not make a move, the only movement was the slow rise and fall of his chest as he breathed.  She moved to the bed and sat down next to him, taking the chair that Nathan had just vacated.  She gazed at Ezra's handsome face, the bandage that went around his head, and she began to cry.

"Now Miss. Laura, don't fret none, Ezra's goin to be fine, just needs some rest."  He kneeled beside her and made her look at him.  "You trust me don't you?"

"Of course Nathan, but it's so hard to sit here and see him laying there like that."  She brushed her tears away and tried to smile.

"I know, but think of all the time he spent in your place, watching over you as you fought to live."  He took Laura's hand and gave it a squeeze, then stood and moved away, motioning for the others to exit the clinic and give Laura some privacy,

Laura reached over and took Ezra's hand, feeling the warmth it held, the strength she knew was in it.  Her other hand began to caress his face, she loved to touch his face, truth be told, she loved to touch all of him.  "Ezra, please wake up, I am so worried about you, I love you and couldn't bare to lose you."  She leaned over and kissed his cheek, then his lips, she would stay with him until he woke.  She sat quietly holding his hand, her eyes taking in every inch of his face, the gentle rise and fall of his chest as he breathed, it made her want to make love to him very much.  It had begun to grow dark outside and Ezra was still unconscious, Laura was very worried, but she trusted Nathan and that was enough, now she was just hungry.

As if on queue, Nathan walked into the clinic carrying a tray of food, it looked like there was enough there for all of them, including Ezra.  That worried her, Nathan must have expected Ezra to be awake by now, if he brought food for him too. "Nathan, he's not awake yet."

"It's ok, his injury wasn't serious, but the head is a complex thing Laura, he will wake when he's ready."  He felt bad, looking into Laura's eyes, they were so filled with worry.  "Now come and have something to eat, Ezra can have some when he wakes."

"Are you sure he's all right Nathan?"

"Yes miss Laura, he's breathing regular and his pulse is strong, try not to worry."  He filled his plate with the fried chicken, biscuits, and corn on the cob that were on the tray, Inez had fixed a fine meal.

Laura sat next to Nathan and filled her plate, she was very hungry and began eating immediately, her gaze drifting to Ezra as she ate, wishing him awake. She ate in silence, feeling Nathan's eyes on her, she appreciated the healers concern, but she couldn't help worrying about her beloved Ezra.  As soon as she had her fill, she moved back to the chair and took Ezra's hand again, watching Nathan on the other side of the bed checking Ezra over, he didn't look concerned.  "How is he doing Nathan?"

"Seems fine, just gotta wait until he's ready to wake, now I need to get some sleep, please let me know if anything changes."  He stood and smiled down at the beautiful lady, Ezra was lucky to have her, what she saw in him, he wasn't sure, but she was definitely the best thing that ever happened to him.

"I will, thank you Nathan."  She watched him leave, then looked back at Ezra, even with the stubble growing on his face, he was the most handsome man she had ever seen.  She continued to sit quietly and watch Ezra, her mind was filled with thoughts of their wedding, it was only four days away now and she still had much to do, but she would not leave Ezra until he woke.  She eventually fell asleep, laying her head on the bed next to Ezra, never letting go of his hand.

Ezra began to stir, a soft moan escaping his lips.  His head was pounding and he fought for a moment to remember what happened, then lifted his hand and touched the bandage around his head.  He realized that someone was holding his other hand, Laura.  He slowly opened his eyes and looked at the angel resting her head on the bed, he loved her more than he ever thought possible.  He gently squeezed her hand, not wanting to wake her, but wanting her to know he was all right. He watched her open her eyes, her green gems sparkled in the dim light, he wanted her more than ever, wanted to spend hours making love to her.  "Darlin?"

"Ezra, your awake, thank God I was so worried about you."  She smiled, relief flooded her body and she leaned over and kissed him gently, feeling his arm come around her and bring her closer, she kissed him deeper. Finally the kiss ended and she moved away, leaning back in the chair, but still holding his hand.

"Darlin, could you fetch my coat?  There is something in the pocket that I need to give you."  He saw the coat on the back of another chair, on the far side of the room, Nathan had removed it and his vest, when he was brought in.

Laura was curious, what could he have for her?  She rose from the chair and reluctantly let go of his hand, missing it's warmth.  She picked up his green coat and brought it to the bed, handing it to him and sitting back down.  She watched as Ezra moved to more of a sitting position, she leaned over and adjusted the pillows for him, so he would be more comfortable.  She could tell he was in pain, but knew he would not let on, she wanted him to get some more rest, now that she was sure he was ok.

"Darlin, I know I have given you an engagement ring, but it was not at all what I wanted for you, but it was the best the General Store had to offer, I have since obtained a better ring and I wish to give it to you now."  He pulled the box from his pocket and held it in his hand.

"Ezra, you didn't have to do that, the one you gave me is fine, all I need is you."  She fought the tears that threatened to fall.

"Perhaps Darlin, but this makes me happy, so please accept this ring, it suits you much better."  He removed the old ring from her finger and took the new one out of the box, gently sliding it down her finger, "Indeed, that is much better."

"Oh Ezra, it's exquisite, you really shouldn't have."  She looked at the ring closely in the dim light, the tears fell freely.  The ring was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, a single solitaire diamond, with a smaller emerald stone on either side.  She looked at Ezra and saw him smiling, if this made him happy, then she would treasure it and she had to admit, it was far more beautiful than the previous one he gave her.

"Those emeralds match your eyes and the first time I laid eyes on that ring, several months ago, all I could think of was you."  He reached out and brushed the tears from her face, she looked so beautiful in the dim light.

"I will cherish it forever Ezra, as I will treasure you forever, I love you so much."  She leaned over and kissed him, letting it grow deeper, tasting and feeling him.  She moved to the bed, laying down beside him and they held each other, Laura couldn't take her eyes off the ring, it sparkled in the light, just as Ezra's eyes did, she thought that, if that ring matched her eyes, then it matched Ezra's too and she would always think of him when she looked at it.  They kissed for a while longer, and then they both fell asleep in each other’s arms.

The next four days passed quickly and quietly, Ezra spent three of those days in the clinic, getting rest and recovering from his injury.  Laura spent what time she could with him, but was very busy with the wedding plans, she and Inez had spent an entire day decorating the church, getting it ready.  Inez had also spent a fair amount of time decorating the saloon, for the reception, and she would be preparing all the food for the occasion, including the wedding cake.

Ezra had been feeling helpless, he wanted to get out of the clinic and help with the preparations, but Nathan would not allow him out.  He had talked at length with Laura about the arrangements and giving her all the money she needed to make their wedding perfect, he knew he could win the money back, he always had great luck at the tables when he was happy and he knew once he was married to Laura, he would be unbelievably happy.  Nathan finally let him leave the clinic the day before the wedding, removing the bandage and stitches from his head.  He immediately began to prepare himself for their wedding the next day, setting out the clothes he would wear, taking the gold wedding bands out of his pocket and making sure they were in good condition.

JD was practically walking on air, Ezra had asked him to be his best man, it was more than he could ever have hoped for, especially after the baby had been lost.  He had smiled brightly and accepted with great excitement, watching Ezra smile at him from the bed in the clinic, he knew that Ezra wanted out of the clinic, but it would be a few days yet.  Now it was one day before the wedding and he was nervous and excited, he would not let Ezra down.  He put his best suit out and made sure he had a bath and shave in the morning, he had been so excited about Ezra and Laura's baby, but it was gone now and he needed to focus on helping the couple find the happiness they deserved.

Laura and Ezra had decided not to see each other until the wedding, knowing it would make them appreciate the moment even more.  Laura had also advised Ezra that she would be more than ready to make love on their wedding night and had every intention of making it an all night affair.  Ezra had been happy to hear that, but he was more than willing to wait if she needed to, she had told him that she was ready.  Ezra woke up the morning of his wedding feeling happy and more alive than he ever had in his entire life, in a matter of hours he would be marrying the most wonderful, beautiful woman he ever knew.  He was disappointed by the telegram he had received from Maude, she had advised him that she would be unable to attend, as she was in the middle of a big con, she also had said that she hoped he was marrying well, as in money.  He didn't care, he loved Laura and despite the fact that she had money, that her family had money, he would have married her no matter what.

Both Ezra and Laura spent the morning preparing, Inez helping Laura and JD helping Ezra, both of them were very nervous and yet excited, they couldn't wait for the wedding, the church and saloon were ready and Judge Travis had arrived last evening, he would be performing the ceremony, with Josiah at his side.  The morning flew by and before anyone knew it, the time was at hand, time for the happy couple to wed.  Ezra and JD headed for the church, Ezra had given JD the ring when they arrived at the church, JD had been so thrilled when Ezra hadn't commented to him about what would happen if he lost the ring, Ezra trusted him and that meant everything to him.  They waited at the church, all of Four Corners had turned out for the event, the church looked beautiful and the wedding march began.

Ezra watched the beautiful woman, who would soon be his wife, walk down the aisle, he felt like his heart would burst from the love that swelled up inside him.  In all his life he never thought he would be marrying a woman that he loved so deeply, he had always thought that he would marry for money, not love, but that was all in the past now.  He glanced at Chris, the man had the biggest smile on his face that Ezra had ever seen on the man, it made him smile as well, despite the fact that he was so happy at that moment, all he wanted to do was cry.

Chris was almost as happy at this moment, as he was when he married Sarah. He was giving Laura away to Ezra, he knew without a doubt that they would be happy together, he had seen it already.  He held Laura's arm a little tighter, feeling it draped around his arm as they moved down the aisle, he watched Ezra as they walked, he'd never seen so many different emotions on the gamblers face, he was always wearing that poker face, not today.  He couldn't help smiling at the play of emotions on Ezra's face, joy was the predominate emotion, but he saw others too, anticipation, worry?  Was he worried that he was doing the right thing, or worried that he wouldn't be able to make Laura happy?

Laura could not take her eyes off Ezra as she walked towards him down the aisle, she felt Chris tighten his hold on her arm, she knew how happy he was to be giving her away.  She noticed that JD was nervous, but also happy.  She couldn't believe this day had finally arrived, it seemed like everything was going against them and she had feared this day would never come, but here it was and she couldn't wait to be Mrs. Ezra Standish, couldn't wait to spend the entire night making love to him.  She looked up at Chris as they reached the end of the aisle, he was smiling.  They all stood in silence as Judge Travis began the ceremony, she gazed deeply into Ezra's eyes, his eyes gazing into hers, their souls touching.  Finally the Judge asked who gives the bride.

"I do." Chris said with a big smile.  He then took Laura's hand and placed it on Ezra's, then moved and sat down in the front pew next to Mary.

The ceremony continued as normal until the vows, since Ezra and Laura had decided to make their own vows, the Judge let each of them speak, starting with Ezra.  "My Darlin Laura, I love you more than I ever thought was possible for me to love anyone, all my life I've been taught that money is more important than anything, my own mother never even showed me any real love."  Ezra paused and took both her hands, looking deep into her eyes. "You have changed all of that, your love and trust has made me realize that love is the only thing that matters, as your husband I will do everything in my power to make you happy and I take you as my wife with every fiber of my being, I will love and cherish you, honor and protect you, and be a good provider for you and our children." He lifted her hands and kissed them, then reached up and wiped the tear from her soft cheek.

"Ezra, I can't say that I haven't experienced love in my life, I have had the love of my parents and brothers, I was devastated when my brothers died, but your presence eased my pain, the same can be said for the loss of our baby, you give me a strength and courage that I never thought existed within me. I take you for my husband with all my heart and soul and I will love and honor you, cherish and respect you, and give you all the children you want, provided I can."  She finished her vows and they turned back towards the Judge, he almost looked like he was ready to cry, Josiah, next to him, was crying, as was everyone in the church.

The rings were presented next, Ezra took the first gold band and gently slid it down Laura's finger to join the engagement ring, "With this ring I thee wed, I love you so much Laura."  He smiled, the tears were welling in his eyes as well now.

Laura took the other band and slid it down Ezra's finger, she liked the way it looked on his beautiful hand.  She smiled up at him, the tears falling freely, "With this ring I thee wed, I love you with all my heart Ezra."  She glanced at JD, he looked so happy and proud, she knew he was proud of himself for not losing the rings.  They again turned back to the Judge and waited for the magic moment, when he would declare them husband and wife and she could kiss him.

"By the power vested in me by the territory, I pronounce you husband and wife, Ezra you may kiss the bride." The Judge finished the ceremony and stepped away from the pulpit, he was happy for Ezra, he had been the last one he expected to get married, much less the first.

Ezra turned to face Laura and took her face in his hands, gazing deep into her tear filled eyes, his own tears slowly running down his cheeks.  "I love you my Darlin wife." He leaned forward and kissed Laura deeply, pulling her into his arms and tasting her depths, feeling her hands wipe his tears away and move down his neck and back, wrapping tightly around his waist.  He held her and kissed her for many long moments, until he was interrupted by applause. He broke the kiss and just held her a moment, his forehead against hers, gazing into her sparkling eyes, he was happier than he ever thought possible.

The bride and groom made their way to the saloon for the reception, they had the first dance and greeted everyone, accepting the wedding gifts, then cut the cake, feeding each other a piece and kissing the frosting off their lips.  They thanked everyone and departed for the hotel, they would spend the entire night making love, the next day they just lay in bed in each others arms, basking in the happiness and pleasure the night before had brought.  A year and a half after their wedding Laura would give birth to their son, Ezra P. Standish III.  Their lives were happy, but not without tragedy, three years after they were wed, their daughter Patricia would be born and one year after that, another son, Patrick would be born a month premature.  During their fifth year of marriage Ezra would become gravely ill and almost died, however their son Patrick would also take ill, being only a year old, he was not strong enough to survive and succumbed to the illness, he was buried along side Ezra II, they would have one additional son two years later, they named him Christopher.  The rest of their lives were uneventful, an occasional injury for Ezra, because of his job, but nothing life threatening.
