The writings of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) are rich in allusions to works that preceded his. No Lovecraftian scholar can obtain a true sense of his work and the legends that lie behind it without a thorough understanding of his intellectual background, which in turn is revealed through the books he read, browsed, referenced, and cited. Nevertheless, despite the wonderful efforts of many presses to bring back into print many of these books, it is difficult or impossible to gather together the many nineteenth and early twentieth century volumes Lovecraft used while crafting his own works.
As more and more of the works Lovecraft read and owned fall out of copyright, many of them are coming to be available on the worldwide web. The purpose of this website is to gather together links to these available texts, along with a short citation, taking the Robert E. Howard Bookshelf as our model, explaining Lovecraft’s link to the referenced work.
The purpose of this website is not to reproduce H. P. Lovecraft’s personal library. S. T. Joshi has done an admirable job of establishing what books Lovecraft owned in his book Lovecraft’s Library: A Catalogue (New York: Hippocampus Press, 2002). The purpose of this website, rather, is to gather links only to those works which Lovecraft had access to that are online. These are books we can establish that Lovecraft owned, read, or mentioned in his stories, essays, or letters.
