I have been taking SMTE this summer. I did not know what to expect this summer when I walked into the class. I hadn't known anybody who had taken the class so I was clueless. I was nervous because I'm not a technology person. The first day I walked into the classroom and I met Dr. Wozny was very surprising. He gave us the outline of the class and I could not believe it. It's the most unconventional class I had ever been in! As he would mention, we would explore what mathematics, science, and technology meant to us and our surroundings. I loved this class because I like new challenges and I love learning new things. Each week we discussed how science, math, and technology applied to our lives and changed it. I did not know that it had such a great influence on our daily lives. When you think about, all of these three combine to make our everyday life better. As I have been exploring my portfolio items, I have found new things that I never knew before. One thing that intrigued me was that rollercoasters go all the way back to the 1700's. I did not know that! I have been riding rollercoasters for years and always thought it was just a creation of the 20th century. Another thing I found interesting was that what our diet can do to us. We watched "Supersize Me" one day in class. This guy ate nothing but McDonald's for 30 days to prove that it can be hazardous to your health. In just 30 days, he ate over 30 pounds of surgar, 12 pounds of fat, and gained over 24 pounds in a month! As I watched the movie, I was disgusted. Ever since that day, I have been watching what I eat and the intake of calories. By taking this class, it has opened my eyes to the importance to science, math, and technology. I always thought it was important but I use to take advantage of it. I didn't quite grasp how much it influenced my everyday life. This class has changed my views and gave me an understanding that I can appreciate them. I am so glad that I was able to take this class and explore. You do not get this opportunity in any other class in college. |
