Family: Chamaeleonidae

Common Name: Perinet Chameleon

Scientific Name: Calumma gastrotaenia

Food: Insects

Distribution: central and eastern Madagascar

Habitat:

Color Discription: The body is uniformly brown, yellow, or green with a lighter stripe reaching from the eye to the base of the tail. They may also display some light spots. The abdomen is a vivid white in color

Physical Discription: The body is elongated with the tail comprising more than half of the body length, and shows no prominent features other than a very slightly offset casque.

Size: 6"

Temperatures/Humidity: daytime temperature 75 - 77º F and the nighttime temperature drop to around 64º F. Humidity should be kept around 60-80% with an increase at night. The temperatures in areas where gastrotaenia are found is often above 86º F. But because the lizards living inside the forests the temperatures seldom rise above 75º F. Because of this the temperature at night in the forest is as prominent as it is in more open areas. In winter the temperatures outside the forests drop below 32º F and it is slightly warmer in the forests. Annual rainfall is about 3000 mm, creating a humidity of 90%.

Breeding/Reproduction: It seems that a brumation during winter at temperatures below 68º F is necessary to promote mating. The eggs should probably be incubated at room temperatures.

Cage Setup: They are not overly aggressive towards each other it maybe possible to keep a pair in a larger enclosure (of at least 24"L x 16"W x 24"H).
