Public School Petition

In order to provide for the children of mages who are unable to procure enough funds for schooling for their children, a law is being proposed to make Salem Academy a public school. Tuition will be paid for by Parliament, as will the wages of professors. All schooling supplies will also be covered by government funds. This would make it possible for all to attend school, especially families with multiple children who are otherwise unable to pay multiple tuitions and school fees.

This will also eliminate the increasing layoffs of school professors due to lack of enough funds to pay salaries. Salem Academy would be a governmentally funded school, relieving the Board of Trustees and personal investors of the burden of making heavy decisions that affect the school; these decisions would now fall under Parliamental discretions, though donations, suggestions, and propositions from private interests would be highly welcomed.

This law has been proposed for the education of our children, and for the benefit of the instructors who guide their minds.

Evie votes yea.

Jones votes yea.

Kanaan votes: Yea

Sasha votes: Yea

Isabella votes yea.

Hamlin votes nay. I agree with using government funds to help aid paying in the tuition of students who cannot afford it, however I do not believe that leaving school policy in the hands of Parliament is the best use of governmental time. I believe that the school's board of governors has served Salem Academy well and I do not think that now is the time to relieve them of that position.

Samra votes nay. I believe that while our school could benefit from more funding from any source it is not in the best interest to exchange extra money for loss of control.

Gideon votes yea.

Garage votes yea.

Bethany votes nay, for the aforementioned reasons that Hamlin and Samra stated.

Approved by the King in the year of Interesting Coincidence.

Passed with some provisional changes made by the king:

Effectively immediately, Salem Academy is now a public school. Also effective immediately the office of the king is establishing a board of mages whose sole focus is to deal with matters of the school. Positions on this board are extended and offered to all former members of the board of trustees. Again, salaries paid to the board will be coming from Parliament, just as instructors at Salem Academy.

Note well: Only this appointed board makes decisions regarding the school. All propositions, changes, additions, or subtractions to be made to Salem Academy cannot be made by any other member of Parliament without it going through the board and/or the king. The other members of Parliament have plenty on their plates and do not need to be given extra duties, whereas the former board of trustees has been doing an excellent job. It would be a shame to lose their support and talent at this juncture. All interested members of the board are requested to meet with the king in an audience to further discuss this addendum. It is each member's choice whether he or she would like a private audience or to come as a group.

If there are any persons interested in becoming a member of this board, they are likewise encouraged to see audience with the king, following the appointment of the original board members.
