Ikra really didn't know how you could get through the day without a good breakfast. He didn't have one that morning. He had to eat "diet" foods. So named because it made him so crabby and hungry that he wanted to "die". Just because he was getting a big tummy. His tummy wasn't bigger then Kanaan's either. It was unfair. Just because Kanaan was so fussy with his food and ate with a fork and a glass. Forks were silly things! especially for mages who had clever hands and thumbs.
He wasn't going to get any mercy from Kanaan. He brought his emptied food dish to him. Kanaan grumbled a negative response. And put his bowl up on the shelf were he couldn't reach it. Mages were weird creatures and exasperating. He tried to jump to get it, but it was too high.
He was going to have to train that mage one day. When he had the time. Ikra was bathed only three days ago and combed till he was fluffy and smelled like soap. How strange! He wasn't sure if he liked that smell at all. So he licked his fur down and rolled around in the sand, to bring it down. Looking better, he pulled out his shiniest collar with the metal studs and got his mage to put it on. Kanaan looked at him funny with a bit of derision. Vanity! It was a marvelous thing. He knew that Kanaan was doing the same thing with his fur and his clothes. Because mages looked just silly without something covering their skin, like a plucked chicken. Mmm chicken
Kanaan was a good mage, well behaved for a mage. Of course no one could understand what went on in the head of such strange creatures. Sometimes they would do crazy things. But Kanaan had the ability to run off into trouble, fast. He must have been the fastest mage in the school. One minute Ikra would be taking Kanaan for a walk, and then the mage would take down the hall leaving his familiar behind.
One of the silly little familiar rats that accompanied a little mage said it was because Ikra was so little and his mage was so big. Rubbish and Nonsense. Ikra was much bigger then a rat. Though not much larger then Kanaan's big shoe Ikra knew that Kanaan wasn't a real pet. He was more of a companion. A wonderful creature that Ikra loved very much. Ikra knew also that he must protect Kanaan from himself, and to be his dearest friend. Kanaan lived in a whole herd of little mages who ran about all day, doing mage things, herding them to one place to another. He was like a big sheep dog, Ikra supposed. Otherwise the little ones would fall in the lake or used magic to get hurt. Magelings were even worse then kittens at getting in trouble. Even Ikra had to help barking when he saw something bad or a little one running away from the other mageling herd. Or making sure that none escaped Kanaan's notice. Kanaan was a very serious.
The good thing was Kanaan would get wrapped up in his work, so the creature wouldn't feel terrible if Ikra had to go do important academy business, things like take his nap in the kitchen. Or steal a snack, or chase mundane mice away to make the place safer, and worry the familiar rats (only a little though rats were fun to chase.) It was important to keep your mage busy with something while you were working. After all Kanaan didn't like chew toys or chasing mice.
When Kanaan was busy Ikra slipped away to do his rounds. He wondered if he'd meet anyone with candy or cheese. That would be wonderful.
