(Thread) Friday afternoon, the woods on the ground of Salem Academy (OPEN)
Oz walked through the garden of the school grounds, lightly touching the flowers as he walked by. He walked past the few students lazing in the yard and the even fewer students who were studying. The forest greeted him as he crossed over the boarder between the kept school grounds and the unkempt forest. Dried up branches cracked under his feet as he walked through to the clearing where he usually studied. Oz sat down on a hollowed out log, a little fox peeked out his head and looked at Oz before scurrying away into the forest. Oz didn't think much of it as he pulled a thick black book out of his bag and started reading.

It always made Calais ill-tempered to go through a change in front of other students, especially younger ones; he preferred to practice magic in out-of-the-way areas, where no one would hear his cursing go from tenor to soprano and back again while he worked out the intricacies of a spell.

"Bedamned professor and his damn problems!" One thing was sure, Calais moved more quietly through the woods on narrow girl feet, unless there was something to bitch about. Too busy complaining to herself to pay much attention, she was startled when she came into the clearing and found someone there. "Oh! Sorry, I-- didn't realize I'd be bothering anyone, out here."

Oz looked up and smiled. He was unfamiliar with this new face. "Oh, it's quite alright," he said softly. "I didn't think anyone else would be out here either," he laughed lightly.

Calais stepped further into the clearing, arms crossing over her chest, but smiling. "Usually this is one of the quietest places to find. Without anyone whining about teachers, I mean. Are you a student?"

"Yes," he said with a nod. "You're quite right about the quietness," he said fondly of the clearing. He was glad that he could share this place with someone else. "I'm Oz Myles," he said standing up and holding out a hand to the girl.

"Calais Wheeler. Nice to meet you." There was nothing feminine about the handshake, though her smile was girlishly bright. "Sorry for ruining your solitude. Are you studying?" She nodded at his book, curiously.

"Oh don't worry about it," he smiled brightly. "I was just doing some interest reading," he said ankoweledging the book.

"Oh, then I feel less guilty for interrupting." Leaning back against a tree trunk, Calais smiled again. "I've been at Salem Academy for almost nine years and I've not run into anyone here, and you're new and you already get found. What luck, right?"
From: [info]under_themoon Date: 08/19/2007 22:08:30

"Oh no," he said. "I've been here for quite some time, just never caught," he grinned.

"You've been here and I haven't met you? I need to get out more often." Calais pushed her hair back, laughing softly. "I am kind of a loner."

"Yeah, I don't usually put myself out there," he said honestly sitting back down on his log and making himself comfortable. "Perhaps I should step out of the woods more often to meet my fellow classmates."

"I can't tell you if you're missing much," Calais joked. "I come out here to get away from people, after all. As often as I can." Her eyes skirted the clearing and turned back to him, and she smiled. "I usually do my homework out here. Well, not here exactly, I walk until I see the right tree to study under."

"This is pretty much the same spot where I study every day," he said looking around fondly at the clearing. "My friend and I are always out here, testing out her new inventions," he said of Evie. "I find it very serene out here."

"It is peaceful. That's the best part." Calais shrugged her shoulders back against the tree trunk. "Just being in a quiet place, it's so much easier to focus."
From: [info]under_themoon Date: 08/19/2007 23:27:23

"It is," he said in agreement. "There's nothing better than a peaceful place where you can clear your head." He leaned back on his hands and squinted into the sunlight breaking through the canopy over head. He noticed that there was something different about the girl before him, but he didn't want to make mention of it, that might give him away. "So, what are you studying Calais?" he asked after a few quiet seconds.
From: [info]callooh_calais Date: 08/19/2007 23:54:43

"Everything I can," Calais said openly, hands sweeping wide for a moment. "But for now, I'm focusing on Wind, I think it'll be the key to some real breakthroughs in my thesis. I'm hoping it'll bring on a whole new way to manipulate magic..." She ducked her head, palming at her hair. "And it's totally not working, yet, but if I stay on here, I can get it to come together, and I'm talking too much, sorry." She shook her head. "I love talking about my pet project. What are you studying?"
From: [info]under_themoon Date: 08/20/2007 00:02:04

"You're not talking too much," he laughed. "I've been working mostly with Earth, Wood, and Lightening, but there is something else I've been working on," he said thinking of the black book sitting in his lap. He didn't want to just put it out there because most people were completely put off by the fact that he was a werewolf, even if he did take quicksilver to prevent transformations. "I've been trying to research ways for werewolves to live easier lives without transforming, you know... if they don't want to," he resolved on the right way to phrase this peice of information.

Eyes widening slightly, Calais nodded. "That's really fascinating!" Something that worked for werewolves might work to keep him settled firmly on the right gender, but he'd never been bitten by a girl as a child... "I've only heard fairy tales and folk stories on the subject, but everyone's done that. How's the research coming?" Calais had never met anyone who'd admitted to being a werewolf, but that didn't mean she hadn't known any.

He smiled, he had never seen anyone so interested in his research. "I learn different things every day and it's quite interesting. Quicksilver is the most effective way to prevent transformations, but there's got to be something better. A way to cure it," he bit his bottom lip lightly and then shook his head. "It's not that I have anything against werewolves you know..." he said.

"I thought silver hurt werewolves?" Calais pursed her lips momentarily. "It can't be pleasant, quicksilver. I bet there are a lot of people that could benefit from your research." She smiled a little. "It's not a bad thing, for someone to have an option to cure themself if they want to." Looking down at her hands, she added, "It would be nice to have a choice in the matter."

Oz noticed the bracelet dangling from her left wrist, he recognized it immediately as the same branding shifter bracelet that Enki always had to wear and understood why she was so sympathetic to the werewolf cause. He smiled. "Silver does hurt werewolves, but in small doses it does help prevent transformations. Quicksilver is not pleasant but as you have said, having a choice is better than not having one at all and quicksilver is the best option as it stands," he smirked. "I guess that's why I'm trying to work out something new."
