Danger...
Temperate,drug-free living...
Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, Drugs, and Bad Eating Habits are just a few of life's "lifestyle hazards".

Tobacco fastens people so tightly in it's grip that without special help they find it impossible to shake the habit.
Irritating particles in cigarette smoke cause a constriction of the small air tubes in your lungs. Some of the poisons also paralyze or slow down the waving motion of the little cilia in the air passages. Then they can't bring up mucus and waste particles from the depths of the lungs to the throat to be eliminated. When they cannot do their work, germs and other irritants collect deep in the lungs and may pave the way for such problems as emphysema or lung cancer.
Tobacco smoke also affects your heart. It makes it beat faster and increases your blood pressure. It causes irregularities in the rhythm of your heartbeat and constricts the blood vessels of the skin. This is why smokers often have cold feet and hands and sallow faces.
Another risky practice you'll want to avoid is the use of "smokeless tobacco". Whether you chew it or just hold it in your mouth, it is extremely dangerous. It may lead to cancer of the mouth, gums, or throat.
Experiments with both rabbits and people show that nicotine by mouth raises total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol(the harmful kind) and lowers HDL(the helpful kind).
In an interview with Ralph Blodgett, former editor of
Vibrant Life magazine, Dr. C.Everett Koop, surgeon general of the United States, said that smoking is even more addictive than alcohol and that it is much harder for a smoker to give up the tobacco than it is for an alcoholic to give up drinking...and thats pretty hard.

Alcohol is a deceptive drug. It acts first upon the higher nerve centers in the front part of the brain, where you think and make judgments and dscisions. Here it also releases your inhibitions and gives you a false sence of superiority. As you drink more, alcohol depresses the nerve centers on the top and sides of the brain, benumbing the sensations and slowing the muscle activity. After this it reaches the lower areas that control the breathing and heartbeat. When it paralyzes these, you are on your way out, for whatever gets your brain gets you! There is no cure for alcoholism except abstinence(leave it alone)...
A poor diet increases the desire to drink alcoholic beverages.
Heavy drinkers are four times as likely to have a stroke as those who do not drink.

We should never look down on intemperate persons, for temperance is more than saying no to tobacco, alcoholic drinks,or drugs. It also means avoiding overwork, over-eating, over or under-excercising, caffine, driving all night, reading very exciting books, or anything that dramatically depletes your energy, and can include anything that builds up a high level of stress ...like worry.

I cannot possibly include all the material provided on Temperance in this short space...
I strongly encourage you to get the book "Eight Sure Steps to Health and Happiness" by:Lucile H. Jones.
