We took the dead man in sheets to the river flanked by LOVE

Often times Live's lyrics are said to bring about questions...questions that are left very much open ended. In Jewelry for the Mind, I am going to attempt to present some material so that you may gain a better knowledge of some of the ideas behind these wonderful lyrics. I'll try to update it every once in a while. I hope you find it useful and maybe it can help answer a few of those questions!

Evolution Revolution

(2001/07/06) - Seeing as how Ed performed a song with Tricky on Tricky's new album, Blowback, called Evolution Revolution Love and how Ed keeps talking about a LOVE Revolution that's about to take place in the world at Live's recent shows, I decided to search out this whole Evolution Revolution mumbo jumbo to see just how these two words actually relate. What I found was quite interesting (IMHO anyway). I found a few things talking about the subject, but what summed up the phrase "Evolution Revolution" the best was an article I found written by Elisee Reclus. The title of the article is (appropriately) Evolution and Revolution and was written back in 1891.

I'd be quite interested to hear what you all think regarding Ed's on-stage spiel about a new Revolution of LOVE about to take place. I know that he made that quite evident at the 9:30 Club show I was at back in May and I'd assume he's preaching that at most of the shows they've been doing recently. Are you guys buying what he's saying, or do you find most of it to be Rock Star bullshit? I, for one, appreciate his talk of LOVE, but I feel that a majority of people who aren't really digging the LOVE angle the band is now taking think it's a load of crap. If you feel so inclined, email me and let me know you're take on this and some of the other things Ed talks about on-stage. I'd LOVE to hear your opinions.

(2001/06/27) - Jiddu Krishnamurti was a man who spent a majority of his life travelling the world giving public talks and preachings of his philosophies on how the working of inner thoughts and desires of individuals could change the world and ultimately bring about world peace and citizenship. Ed was greatly influenced by Krishnamurti's teachings when writing the lyrics for Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi. Discussions have come up over at Live-Web lately that have brought about the mentioning of Krishnamurti and his teachings and the effect they had on the lyrical content of the two albums.

I've come across a few great Jiddu Krishnamurti sites that I think might help explain some of lyrics on TC and SS. The Krishnamurti Information Network is a great place to start looking. Among numerous features on the site are quotes on Krishnamurti from Henry Miller and Aldous Huxley. Both of whom Ed either mentions or references on Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi. You will also find a breif biography and introductions to Krishnamurti's teachings among many other things on this site. Jiddu Krishnamurti Quotes and Stories is also a great website. It contains various stories, quotes and questions and more importantly gives a lot of information on Krishnamurti's thoughts towards certain topics (i.e. addiction, responsibility, thought, truth and a religious mind). I think you will all find it rather intriguing.

(2001/06/15) - Here's a link to an exhibit for the Tibetan Book of the Dead. You may find it helpful in understanding the song "T.B.D." off of Throwing Copper. T.B.D. is a song written about a man named Aldous Huxley. It was said that Huxley had his wife read to him The Tibetan Book of the Dead as he was on his death bed injecting his body full of L.S.D so that he would go with no pain. The exhibit goes through and helps explain the texts and pictures within the book. Just some food for thought!!

I also ran across another great site with some great links concerning issues contained within the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Reluctant Messenger can be viewed here.
